BBC Scotland commissions new short form comedies

The new commissions add to a portfolio of successful digital-first scripted content that includes Float, Dog Days and Short Stuff

BBC Scotland has commissioned four new short form comedy series, adding to its portfolio of established and successful digital-first scripted content, which includes award-winning dramas such as Float and Dog Days and its digital comedy strand Short Stuff.

These commissions form part of BBC Scotland’s digital strategy which is designed to deliver distinctive Scottish content on platforms where audiences are increasingly choosing to watch.

By commissioning formats that are accessible and shareable, BBC Scotland continues to evolve how it reaches younger and more diverse audiences.

Earlier this year, the BBC announced its partnership with YouTube as part of the BBC’s value for all strategy, ensuring more BBC content is accessible to all audiences where they are.

Louise Thornton, BBC Scotland’s head of commissioning said: “These projects reflect our ambition to create bold, original Scottish content that works brilliantly on BBC iPlayer and beyond.

“They speak directly to how audiences are watching today.”

Gavin Smith, commissioning editor, scripted added: “We have been working for many years in the scripted digital-first short form space and our strategy has produced award winning content.

“We’re delighted to have brought Deb Charles into the team as assistant commissioner, scripted to build on this success and we look forward to having further content announcements in the coming months.”

Marc Jennings’ Genuine Question – Why Vote?

In the run up to the Holyrood election, Marc Jennings’ Genuine Question – Why Vote? follows stand up comedian and podcast host Marc Jennings as he attempts to understand Scottish politics from the perspective of the “everyman”.

Marc takes a peak behind the curtain of the campaign trail hearing contrasting views from people wearing very different shades of rosette.

Contributors include Angela Constance (SNP), Mags Hall (Scottish Greens), Sanne Dijkstra Downie (Scottish Liberal Democrats), Thomas Kerr (Reform UK), Paul Sweeney (Scottish Labour) and Meghan Gallacher (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party).

To help cut through the noise, Marc also turns to expert analysis from political commentator and academic Professor Sir John Curtice.

Covering major issues, manifesto promises, competing claims, crucial context and occasional daft tangents, the series balances factual insight with satirical instinct — one man doing his best to understand why these people want your vote.

Commenting, Marc Jennings says: “As a stand-up comedian with a podcast, it was only a matter of time before I stuck my nose into politics.

In an age where many are feeling scunnered with politics the Holyrood election gives us a chance to see whether there actually is anyone worth voting for.”

The Chief Grills…

The Chief Grills sees Chief Commissioner Cameron Miekelson – better known as The Chief – invite a series of high profile “persons of interest” into the interrogation room.

Guests include musician Callum Beattie, Scotland international footballer Ryan Christie, interior designer Banjo Beale, influencer agency directors Amy Moore and Kirsten Cameron, stand up comic Connor Burns, and author and podcaster Sophie Gravia.

Under police interview conditions, and “for the benefit of the tape”, The Chief conducts in depth conversations about life, legacy and the law.

Conversations lead to surprising revelations and unexpected collaborations, from The Chief’s tips for winning the World Cup to his ideas for re engineering stadium anthems with a more “pro police” message. Once the Chief is satisfied no further action is required, guests are free to go.

With his trademark authority and curiosity, The People’s Chief is determined to understand what makes modern Scotland tick. Believing that those shaping society can help him better understand it, Miekelson quizzes his guests while consulting case files, uncovering “evidence” and revisiting key dates. Interviewees are asked where they were on the day in question, whether they’ve ever found themselves in trouble, and are encouraged to make any necessary admissions.

At the same time, The Chief presents himself as a Renaissance Man, constantly highlighting the many ways he believes he has something in common with his guests. Open to collaboration and advice, he explores how everyone might work together for the good of the police force – and indeed the nation.

Starring Jack Docherty, The Chief Grills is a 6×10 series produced by The Comedy Unit (A Banijay Company) for BBC Scotland. Episodes will publish weekly on BBC Scotland’s YouTube channel from 11 May. It will be available on BBC iPlayer later in the year.

MyAmi Nails

A polished, fast-moving, gag-packed, short form comedy celebrating community, colour and the chaotic beauty of starting over.

Leanne’s world is turned upside down when she inherits her brother’s business. She goes from working as a car mechanic to overseeing beauty treatments. Steep learning curve. Very different tools.

It is a challenge running any business these days. And Leanne wouldn’t describe herself as a nail bar regular. Thankfully the staff are friendly – enthusiastic Shoshanna, experienced May and expert Shug – her brother’s partner.

MyAmi Nails is a 1×10” short form sitcom produced by The Comedy Unit (A Banijay Company) for BBC Scotland. It is written by and stars Karen Dunbar as Leanne, Lawrence Chaney as Shug, Maureen Carr as May and Catriona Faint as Shoshanna.

It is available to watch now on the BBC Scotland YouTube channel and across BBC Scotland social channels in bitesized vertical chunks.

Reality Bunker

Reality Bunker, written and performed by Harrison MacNeill and Leo MacNeill, (aka Them is Brothers), is a unique parody of reality TV, set in a subterranean bunker somewhere in Scotland. It’s a multiverse of reality shows crashed into one!

The series lampoons every competitive reality show there is – think Traitors in a Scottish Bunker, Love Island in a Scottish Bunker, Squid Game in a Scottish Bunker, Big Brother, The Running Man, Celebrity Shark Swimming, Destination X… Reality Bunker is a mix of each, delivered in bitesize episodes.

There are confessions to camera, ridiculous tasks, betrayals, romances and evictions as well as day-to-day conversations, interactions and developments… all in a post-apocalyptic subterranean bunker.

The series is an all-encompassing melting pot of character and conflict, with endless daftness coming from the mix of contestants from across Scotland, the UK and beyond, all played by Harrison and Leo.

Harrison and Leo are experienced writer performers, and have previously written and performed in BBC Scotland Short Stuff sketches ‘Til Breath Do Us Part, Suburban Supervillains and The Crime That Happened.

Reality Bunker is a 10×2’ series produced by North Bridge Media for BBC Scotland. It will be available to watch later this year on BBC Scotland’s YouTube channel and social platforms.

Comedy business lands serious returns from investing in laughter

Inclusive entrepreneur turns university course into funding windfall 

A 10-week online marketing course from The Open University in Scotland has transformed the fortunes of an Edinburgh-based comedy entrepreneur, leading to equity-free funding and her first employee hire. 

Katie Palmer, founder of Brass Tacks Comedy, signed up for the course after spotting it in Martin Lewis’s Money Saving Expert newsletter.

What began as a low-commitment way to boost her marketing skills has since unlocked entrepreneurial support and funding, helping to attract major clients and secure long-term income stretching into 2027. 

Brass Tacks Comedy is built on a mission to support underrepresented voices in an industry traditionally centred around London. Katie works with comedians from diverse backgrounds, including those from economically disadvantaged communities and performers with a range of gender identities and sexual orientations.

Despite the famous Scottish sense of humour, Katie noticed that comedy was suffering from a lack of support in Scotland, with many talented acts overlooked or priced out by a London-centric industry. 

Katie was awarded funding and entrepreneurial support through The Open University in Scotland after completing the Business management: marketing principles and practice microcredential course. She used the investment to build a professional website, develop marketing resources and create systems that have since attracted bigger clients and multi-date tours.

Katie Palmer, founder of Brass Tacks Comedy said: “I didn’t know any of this support existed. I signed up for a 10-week course because I thought it would be useful. It ended up opening so many doors to me and my business. 

“Working with The Open University in Scotland’s Open Enterprise Network has been transformative. The ongoing support has made a huge difference to the business. The team is brilliant at spotting and sending on opportunities to access funding that I would never have known existed otherwise. 

“It’s given me the confidence to think bigger and actually go for things. Having someone genuinely invested in your success, who takes the time to understand what you’re building and makes you feel like your business is worth backing is game changing. That validation has been just as valuable as the funding itself. 

“Since receiving the funding, I’ve attracted more clients and bigger comedians who want to tour with me. The biggest tour I’ll have worked on is now booked for 2027, which means long-term income and the confidence to hire my first employee. I’ve also had the confidence to apply for follow on funding from other bodies.” 

Katie was supported by The Open University in Scotland through its enterprise and startup support schemes, including its microfinance competition which provides equity-free funding to help students take early-stage business ideas forward. 

Increasingly supporting entrepreneurs who are building businesses alongside work, caring responsibilities and life commitments, its flexible model enables students of all ages and backgrounds to study and apply learning in real time, while remaining rooted in their own communities. 

Offering a strong package of support, students and recent graduates can access a wide programme of events, resources and competitions designed to help turn ideas into viable businesses.

This includes hands-on enterprise bootcamps, funding competitions such as the Open Enterprise Network Converge Microfinance Competition and a rich library of online learning covering entrepreneurship, leadership, finance, marketing and digital skills. 

Supported by expert guidance and an active peer community, the Open Enterprise Network gives entrepreneurs the tools, confidence and connections to build and grow businesses wherever they are based across Scotland. 

For example, The Open University has supported four Edinburgh-based start-ups thus far: Katie’s Brass Tacks Comedy, ultra-endurance races and events business, Primeval, creative social enterprise To Be Read and outdoor advertising agency, Rider Ads. 

In Edinburgh, The Open University in Scotland is supporting 1815 students, 72% of whom are in employment and 19% don’t have traditional university entrance qualifications. Through its initiatives, the University is helping students move from idea to trading in a practical and sustainable way. 

Jane Grant, Depute Director of External Engagement and Partnerships at The Open University in Scotland, said Katie’s experience reflected the university’s unique approach to entrepreneurship. 

She said: “As Scotland’s national university for widening access and lifelong learning, we are proud to support entrepreneurial students across Scotland, including those in rural, coastal and community-based settings, who may face barriers to accessing traditional campus-based education.

Our model is designed to meet individuals where they are, allowing them to develop skills and ideas alongside their work and life commitments, and turn ambition into action, no matter where they are based.

Kevin Bridges: In Search of the Beautiful Game kicks off on the BBC ahead of the Men’s FIFA World Cup

The Scottish football superfan examines the contemporary state of football and its cultural significance

Ahead of Scotland meeting Brazil once again in the upcoming Men’s FIFA World Cup 2026, Scottish football superfan and one of the UK’s most critically acclaimed comedians Kevin Bridges is undertaking an international journey to examine the contemporary state of football and its cultural significance.

Travelling to locations including Brazil, Scotland and the USA, the programme explores how football is experienced across different communities and environments.

Kevin Bridges: In Search of the Beautiful Game (1×60’) is a brand-new commission for BBC Scotland, BBC One and iPlayer and will be made by Bango Studios, the production company established by BAFTA, RTS and Grierson-winning producers Emily Hudd and Iain Wimbush.

The special will follow Bridges as he engages with players, supporters and local voices to understand the role football plays today, examining themes of identity, community and change, and how the meaning of the game may have evolved over time.

For the first time in 28 years Scotland are going to the FIFA Men’s World Cup. And, in a beautiful coincidence (or nightmare) they’re playing Brazil again. It’s indisputably the biggest sporting event in Scotland’s recent memory and gives Scotland the opportunity to score their first ever victory over Brazil and a result that would instantly become one of the most memorable in Scottish football history.

Part travel adventure and part football investigation, Kevin Bridges: In Search of the Beautiful Game will see Kevin immerse himself in the deep-rooted relationship with football found across the world. And it’s Kevin’s own personal mission to see whether the joy of football he experienced in the 1998 World Cup still exists in football today.

Kevin Bridges said: “I’ve been a football fan for as long as I can remember, I was 11 years old when Scotland last qualified for the World Cup, a lot has changed about football since then and like a lot of people, I’ve become a little disillusioned with where the game is headed.

“I’m excited to be setting out on this mission; to see if the game still has a soul and that its beauty is not yet lost.”

Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC, said: “Kevin Bridges is one of the UK’s most beloved comedians, as well as a lifelong football obsessive.

“We cannot wait to bring Kevin’s adventures to screen ahead of the BBC’s coverage of the FIFA Men’s World Cup this year.”

Kevin Bridges: In Search of the Beautiful Game will air ahead of the BBC’s coverage of the FIFA Men’s World Cup 2026.

Fans will be able to watch the highly anticipated final match of Group C, Scotland v Brazil, live from the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on BBC One and BBC iPlayer as part of the BBC’s extensive coverage of the FIFA Men’s World Cup. The match itself kicks off at 11pm (BST) on 24 June 2026.

These newly announced shows form part of a wide-ranging 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe programme, bringing together leading names, rising stars and international artists. So You Think You’re Funny? Heats continue the search for comedy’s next big star, as contestants compete for a place in the final of the UK’s biggest newcomer competition. Previous winners include Peter Kay, Aisling Bea, Sara Pascoe and Lee Mack.

Comedy highlights includeGregor Fisher: An (Early) Evening With Gregor Fisher, where the Scottish stage and screen legend shares stories from his life and career; Madeleine Brettingham: Legend, the debut show from the So You Think You’re Funny? 2025 winner exploring myth, identity and growing up in a world of booze-soaked bad behaviour; and Rich Hall: Chin Music, a typically sharp, improvisational hour from the acclaimed comedian.

The Guilty Feminist, hosted by Deborah Frances-White, brings its Road to Gilead Project to the Fringe, alongside rising Scots comedy star Kim Blythe: Puzzle, following a sold-out 2025 run, and Smack The Pony’s Fiona Allen: White Lies, a sharply observed new show about social anxiety and human interaction.

Further highlights include Kathleen Hughes: Twig, exploring family and legacy; Reuben Solo: Someone in This Crowd Will Betray Me [Revenge Edition], a chaotic, high-concept return; and two shows from Phil Nichol, with a brand-new work Aren’t We Lucky and the 20th anniversary of his Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning The Naked Racist.

New additions to the programme include Comedy Night at the Museum, a Gilded Balloon production bringing together top international comedians for a wholly improvised late-night show inspired by real artefacts from the National Museum of Scotland; Shane Daniel Byrne: Baby It’s Time, showcasing one of Ireland’s fastest-rising comedic voices; and Christian Dart: GUMSHOE!, a multi award-nominated, sell-out hit blending noir parody with high-energy character comedy.

Rising voices and distinctive perspectives continue across the programme with Adi Parmar: Sunny Boy, Alan Jay: Hell Hath No Humour Like a Gayboy Scorned, Eva Peroni: Jungledand Fab Goualin: Mixed Messages, alongside Hannah Byczkowski: Killer, a darkly comic debut from the winner of The Traitors, and Aoife Dunne: Good Grief,returning after a sell-out run. Emmy and Golden Globe-winning comedian Guy Branum brings Be Fruitful, a bold, thought-provoking hour blending humour with social commentary.

Theatre highlights include SLAY, a darkly funny and unflinching exploration of trauma, therapy and modern coping mechanisms, andSilent Disco, an inventive, headphone-led experience blending psychology and music.

Further standout work includes HESS, Michael Burrell’s powerful and timely revival exploring the psychology of extremism and its lasting impact, and Broke & Fabulous in the 21st Century,a riotous, raunchy dramedy celebrating friendship, ambition and modern love.

Other theatre shows on sale today include Ostrich, a sharp look at modern dating and identity; Top Gunchained, a high-energy parody from the team behind Yippee Ki Yay; Boy in a Box, a confronting and urgent piece examining race and identity in America; and Waiting For Wonka, a darkly comic reimagining of childhood nostalgia.

Themed shows bring a mix of interactive and late-night entertainment, includingThe Thinking Drinkers’ Great British Pub Ride, an epic, drink-fuelled journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats; Dreamgun Film Reads, where comedians perform unrehearsed parody versions of classic films; and Not Another Quiz Night, a high-energy, chaotic late-night favourite.

Cabaret and variety sees Fake, a critically acclaimed blend of magic, storytelling and illusion from Chris Cook that explores truth, deception and identity; EIGHT: The One (Wo)Man Drag King Musical Parody, a high-energy, genre-bending musical comedy reimagining Henry VIII through drag, parody and pop and Fungasm: Save or Smash offers up bold, interactive performance.

Music and musicals range from nostalgic fun to powerful storytelling, including Crocodile Rock, a touching coming-of-age musical set on Cumbrae; Primary School Bangers, a high-energy singalong experience; Unheard Voices, Unbroken Spirits, a new musical exploring the Scottish care system; and Antigone: A Town Hall Musical, a contemporary retelling of a classic tragedy.

Also featured is Charlene Kaye: Diversity Shredder, introducing audiences to the unhinged, razor-sharp world of Charlene Kaye — guitar god, internet legend and “breakout comedy star” (Rolling Stone), alongside Siobhan Wilson: Flowercore, an immersive performance celebrating Scotland’s wildflowers through music and visual art.

Children’s and family shows include Max Fulham’s Monkey Business, a lively, family-friendly mix of puppetry, sketches and slapstick comedy and Mama G: The Magic Bookmark comes to Teviot. “Everyone’s favourite pantomime dame!” (Metro) and Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Mama G discovers the magic of books and the power of being yourself in this hilarious award-winning panto adventure for the whole family! 

Bring Yer Bairn Comedy is the adult comedy show where you can bring yer bairn! A selection of our favourite comics from the Scottish scene and beyond, performing to parents, carers and bairns under 15 months old! The perfect morning show!

Two of Scotland’s leading artists and theatre-makers, Hannah Lavery and Cora Bissett, join forces to create an urgent multi‐form evening of theatre, music, poetry, comedy, film, dance and collaborative performance at Central Hall, Edinburgh, on 1 May.

Created as a rapid-response theatre project, in direct response to the turbulent social and political climate, they have curated and gathered together a constellation of Scottish artists for a one-night-only flare of short, urgent performances and interventions.

Through new work, unique collaborations and community voices, Mayday meets the “dark times” we are living through with wit, defiance, tenderness and imagination. This collective response honours the theatrical space as a place where audiences can think together, dream together and begin to imagine the futures we are still reaching for.

Co-curators/co-directors Hannah Lavery and Cora Bissett said: “Given the times we are living in—where division is being  fuelled by dangerous and deliberately misinformed rhetoric— we feel deeply and personally connected to this Rapid Response Project.

“We are living through an age of fear: extreme racism and anti-migrant sentiment are being normalised, human rights attacked at every level, climate injustice accelerating, and ordinary people struggling to meet even basic needs. 

“We’re  thrilled to curate an event that will bring together bold, fierce, insightful and creatively galvanising voices from across Scotland – an urgent celebration of our shared humanity that challenges the rising tide of hate, calls upon solidarity, inspires change and imagines a more compassionate future.”  

Highlights include: 

  • Original short sharp plays from playwrights Apphia Campbell (The Official Version), Hannah Lavery (Patriotic Renewal), Uma Nada-Rajah (The Proposal) and Sara Shaarawi (Pandora’s Box) 
  • Sanjeev Kohli delivers a short sketch on the cultural impact of his character Navid from Still Game
  • Live music from Declan Welsh, Soapbox and Djana Gabrielle, who honours Beldina Odenyo’s (Heir of the Cursed) Dala with a powerful, intimate performance that moves between vulnerability and defiance. 
  • Cross-artform collaborations including Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award winner Kathryn Joseph’s powerful new collaboration with dancer Kassichana Okene-Jameson, visuals by Lucas Chi-Peng Kao, choreography by Joan Clevillé, and direction by Cora Bissett. Joseph’s haunting, fragile songs intertwine with movement in a visceral fusion of music and dance. Created in collaboration with Scottish Dance Theatre.
  • Collaborations between professional artists and community groups:
    • An Artistic Response to Talat Yaqoob’s International Women’s Day Speech, Edinburgh, March 2026 led by award-winning choreographer and dance maker Janice Parker.
    • Loud and Proud Choir 
    • Dawn Sievewright (Wild Rose) performs No a Weans Choice, the defiant rallying cry from the Glasgow Girls stage show, composed by Cora Bissett

For over 18 years, Leith-based charity Strange Town has provided life-changing access to the arts for hundreds of young people across Edinburgh each year.

Through youth theatre groups, holiday programmes, film skills workshops, stage management experience, a Young Company and professional agency support, the organisation nurtures the next generation of Scotland’s creative talent — many of whom would not otherwise have access to these opportunities. 

Strange Town is committed to creating meaningful professional pathways for early-career artists — opportunities that are increasingly rare in today’s funding landscape. All artists and practitioners are paid fairly and supported throughout.

The charity also extends its impact beyond Edinburgh, enabling local performers to progress to stages in London’s West End and onto the small screen and major streaming platforms. 

This March, the charity shines a spotlight on its Young Company (18–25), returning to Summerhall following previous sell-out runs with a newly commissioned production:

After a 30-year delay in the departure lounge, The High Life returns in a new musical spectacular featuring all four original cast members – Alan Cumming, Forbes Masson, Siobhan Redmond and Patrick Ryecart akaSebastian Flight, Steve McCracken, Shona Spurtle and Captain Hilary Duff.

They are joined onstage by Louise McCarthy, Kyle Gardiner, Rachael Kendall Brown, Ross Baxter, Lauren Ellis-Steele, Ciara Flynn and Grant McIntyre.

The production will tour Scotland in Spring 2026, with previews and opening performance at Dundee Rep Theatre from 27 March, then onward touring to Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, HMT Aberdeen, Eden Court Theatre, returns to Dundee Rep Theatre and King’s Theatre Glasgow until 23 May 2026.

The High Life is a creative collaboration between trailblazing, multi-award-winning artist Alan Cumming (US Traitors, X2 and Avengers: Doomsday and Cabaret on Broadway) and his long-time writing and performing partner, prolific stage and screen actor and writer Forbes Masson (Only Child, The Crown, Eastenders). The creative team is joined by celebrated writer, performer and panto-maker Johnny McKnight (Wendy Hoose, Radiant Vermin, River City) and the award-winning and internationally acclaimed Artistic Director of Dundee Rep, Andrew Panton (Make It Happen, August: Osage County, No Love Songs, A History of Paper).

Oh dearie me! Air Scotia has been sold, and unless our intrepid cabin crew can prove they’re still fit for purpose it looks like the future destination for Air Scotia is the scrap heap. In this flight for their lives, our cut-price cabin crew must get themselves (and their passengers) to their destination safely, testing their mettle and putting decades old friendships and rivalries finally to rest.

The High Life was first commissioned and broadcast by the BBC, created by and featuring Alan Cumming and Forbes Masson. It was a launchpad to its creators’ long and illustrious careers. Since airing in the 90s it has attracted cult status for its sharp wit, farcical storytelling and joyous buffoonery. Taking place in the fictional Air Scotia airline, it centres around air stewards Steve, Sebastian and Shona – the most useless cabin crew ever to push a drinks trolley while asking ‘U Fur Coffee?”.

This revival sees our iconic characters finding themselves growing older in an ever-changing world. It will feature new and original music, is stuffed full of camp silliness and is cleared for take-off.

MEET THE CABIN CREW

Siobhan Redmond reprises her TV role as the iconic Shona Spurtle on stage. Siobhan has worked extensively in theatre, film and television and is known most recently for appearances in Two Doors Down, Death in Paradise and Rain Dogs. 

She is joined on board by Patrick Ryecart as the absent-minded Captain Hilary Duff. Patrick’s screen credits include The Crown, Poldark and The King’s Speech. 

Joining the original cast is Louise McCarthy as Heather Argyll, Kyle Gardiner as Mylie and Rachael Kendall Brown as Kylie. Louise McCarthy is currently appearing in the Tron Theatre’s panto Gallus in Weegieland  and previously was seen on Scottish stages in Wild Rose (Royal Lyceum Theatre) after featuring in the original film which inspired the stage show. She is also known to audiences from the Scottish BAFTA winning Scot Squad. She most recently worked with National Theatre of Scotland in 2022 for the musical adaptation of Peter Mullan’s Orphans, and previously appeared in My Left Right Foot, Yer Granny and Men Should Weep. 

Kyle Gardiner recently appeared in Restless Natives The Musical touring Scotland and as the titular Wullie in Oor Wullie at Dundee Rep. He previously worked with National Theatre of Scotland on the Scottish tour of Moorcroft (co-produced with Tron Theatre) and The Panopticon. 

Rachael Kendall Brown has just finished Get Down Tonight at the Charing Cross Theatre, where she took over the lead role of ‘Dee’, having previously understudied the role. Previous credits include the UK tour of Pretty Woman. 

Completing the crew, the ensemble features Ross Baxter, Lauren Ellis-Steele, Ciara Flynn and Grant McIntyre. Ross Baxter toured Scotland earlier this year in Restless Natives The Musical, and is currently appearing in Snow White at Eden Court, Inverness. 

Lauren Ellis-Steele appeared on Scottish stages in Noisemaker and A Play, a Pie and a Pint’s SCOTS, previous credits include the UK and Ireland tour of Wicked and the BBC Northern Ireland series 6Degrees. Ciara Flynn is a Scottish performer, who has toured in Girl’s Night OOT and Girl’s Night OOT 2, Mother Goose at the Ayr Gaiety and Maw Goose at Macroberts Arts Centre in Stirling. 

Grant McIntyre appeared in Dundee Rep’s Oor Wullie as a performer and the associate choreographer, and in National Theatre of Scotland’s Maggie & Me. Previous credits include SCOTS and The Addams Family UK Tour.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay has today announced a music and comedy programme spannning four days of the festival, with Scottish talent topping the bill across the famous Street Party, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Festival Club at the Assembly Rooms and Candlelit Concerts at St.Giles’ Cathedral. 

From electro-trad trailblazers Valtos to comedy mainstays Susie McCabe, Larry Dean and Christopher Macarthur-Boyd, trad trio Lau, as well as Street Party headliners 2manydjs and more, there’s non-stop entertainment to end the year on a high at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay.  

EDINBURGH’S HOGMANAY STREET PARTY

Amidst the backdrop of Edinburgh’s historic skyline, the legendary Street Party will once again transform the city centre into one of the world’s largest open-air dancefloors on 31 December, bringing in the bells with the last show of 2025 and the first of 2026. 

Electronic sensations 2manydjs will headline the Party Zone, delivering a set relayed throughout Princes Street, building up to the world-famous Midnight Moment fireworks from Edinburgh Castle. 

Known for their eclectic, boundary-pushing DJ sets, the Belgian duo will take to the decks for one night only, joined by special guest DJHayley Zalassi, who will kickstart the party with one of her euphoric sets. 

Meanwhile, the Tartan Zone will spotlight homegrown talent, headlined by genre-bending Skye duo Valtos. Known for their powerful fusion of electronic soundscapes and contemporary folk, Martyn MacDonald and Daniel Docherty will set the tone for a high-energy night, joined by their full live band.

Partygoers can dance the night away to all-female folk outfit The Poozies and the upbeat Bella McNab’s Dance Band, creating one of the world’s largest ceilidh dances and spotlighting Scottish traditional music to end the year.

“The Street Party is iconic worldwide and the opportunity to showcase our sound (and the sound of Scotland) to locals, and visitors alike, fills us with much excitement. The only thing blowing the roof off this year will be Valtos!”

ASSEMBLY ROOMS FESTIVAL CLUB

Some of Scotland’s leading comedians join the Hogmanay festivities this year with a night of non-stop laughs at Ho Ho Hogmanay on 30 December, featuring award-winning comedy from Larry Dean, Christopher Macarthur-Boyd and more. 

A stellar bill of Scottish acts will take to the stage including one of the UK’s leading comics and three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Larry Dean and, following a completely sold out Edinburgh Fringe run, Glaswegian stand-up Christopher Macarthur-Boyd, plus Edinburgh local and rising star Ayo Adenekan, with the night hosted by comedy legend Susie McCabe.  

Susie McCabe said: “New Year is such a brilliant time to be in Edinburgh, and a night of comedy at the Assembly Rooms is the perfect starter before the main event on Hogmanay night!”

Assembly Rooms will also host a special opening-night takeover with Vic Galloway’s Vitamin C Club Night on 29 December, following the annual Torchlight Procession. Curated and hosted by BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway and Andy Wake (The Phantom Band), this spectacular night of live music will feature live music from local indie-rock band waverley. and a DJ set from Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai fame, for non-stop dancin’, a night of rock’n’roll, psych, cosmic disco, soul, funk and rarities – and everyone is invited. 

The festival’s beloved foot-stompin’ ceilidhs also return, inviting revellers of all ages to dance their way into the New Year in true Scottish style.

An annual sell-out, the Bairns Hogmanay Ceilidh Club returns for an afternoon of family fun on 31 December with the Sensational Jimi Shandrix Experience, whilst the late-night Hogmanay Ceilidh Club invites guests to dress to impress and take to the dancefloor for a night of high-energy ceilidh in traditional Hogmanay fashion, featuring Scotland’s best live ceilidh bands across two dancefloors with Ceilidhonia, Teannaich, Hugh McDiarmid’s Haircut, and Bodhran Bodhran, delicious whisky tasting and a raucous countdown to midnight and Auld Lang Syne.  

CANDLELIT CONCERTS 

In the Old Town, the beloved Candlelit Concert at St. Giles’ Cathedral returns on Hogmanay night, offering an evening of musical reflection in one of Edinburgh’s most atmospheric settings.  

This year’s concert marks the arrival of 2026 with works from classical giants Bach and Mozart, performed by the St. Giles’ Cathedral Choir, directed by new Master of Music Jack Oades, along with the St. Giles’ Camerata, and a stunning array of talented young soloists. 

Brand new for 2025, St. Giles’ is also the setting for an intimate candlelit performance from acclaimed folk trio Lau on 30 December. Lau by Candlelight sees some of traditional music’s most celebrated innovators Kris Drever (guitar, vocals), Martin Green (accordion) and Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle), strip away their banks of electronics, loops and wild effects, for a performance less about spectacle and more about close listening and reflection. 

These newly announced shows further expand a four-day programme that already features Grammy Award-winners Wet Leg at the Concert in the Gardens, joined by Scots favourites Hamish Hawk and Lucia & The Best Boys.  

Scottish music legends Peat & Diesel headline the Night Afore Concert on 30 December, performing a barnstorming set underneath the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, with support from Scottish accordion sensation RuMac. 

City of Edinburgh Council Leader Jane Meagher said: “Edinburgh’s Hogmanay is always an unforgettable experience, and 2025 promises to be another year to remember.

“With a fantastic four-day festival lined up for the celebrated Street Party, there’s no better place in the world to welcome the New Year.

“This year’s programme truly offers something for people of all ages – whether you’re dancing to DJ sets from international icons like 2MANYDJs and local favourite Hayley Zalassi or enjoying the family-friendly fun of the beloved Bairns Hogmanay Ceilidh Club.

Scottish acting legend Gregor Fisher invites audiences to an intimate evening of memories, laughter and the kind of behind-the-scenes tales you won’t find on IMDb.

Joined on stage by long-time friend and director Nigel West, Fisher promises “an evening of reminiscences, stories and things you’ve never heard before” with a wink, a grin and maybe a few surprises he probably shouldn’t tell.

From Rab C. Nesbitt to Para Handy, from Mr Squeers to Love Actually, Fisher’s career has spanned decades, genres and wigs. Expect reflections on the highs, the lows and the “probably best forgotten” moments of a life spent in the wonderfully unpredictable world of show business.

“We’ll be talking about everything from adoption to acting, from The Baldy Man to Mr Bumble, from cocaine to Christmas movies (the cocaine’s a lie, by the way, but I’m trying to sell tickets),” says Fisher.

“It’s not a grand performance, more of a friendly chat. There’ll be stories, laughs and maybe a few moments that make you think, ‘I did not know that about him.’”

Far from a formal retrospective, this is Fisher at his best: candid, sharp and effortlessly funny. A night where the stories come with a pint’s warmth, the humour lands close to home and the man himself reminds us why he remains one of Britain’s most beloved and enduring screen personalities.

Celebrated for his versatility and comic talent, Fisher has built a career that balances heart and humour with ease. His credits include the iconic Rab C. Nesbitt, Michael Radford’s Merchant of Venice, 1984 (1984), Naked Video (1986), The Railway Children (2000), Love Actually (2003), Oliver Twist (2007) and The Cockfields (2019). Most recently, he completed filming the second series of BBC One’s Only Child, following rave reviews for his performance in the first.
