A series of short comedy scenes, juggling, readings of writing and poetry, human puppets, with dance and stage combat. There will be a raffle with exciting prizes.

Teas, coffees, wine and nibbles will be on sale on the evening too. All profits made on the night will go towards the North Edinburgh Theatre project.

Pride of place: national award for North Edinburgh Grows

North Edinburgh Arts has won a prestigious national award. The Scottish Civic Trust has recognised the arts centre’s garden project North Edinburgh Grows with the My Place Award 2015 (writes Dave Pickering).

Kate Wimpress, Director at North Edinburgh Arts, and Lachlan Stewart, from Anta Architects who designed the garden, received the award from Minister for Local Government and Community Empowerment Marco Biagi MSP at a ceremony at the Lighthouse in Glasgow on Thursday.

The Scottish Civic Trust is the national body for the civic movement in Scotland and the My Place Awards is a unique scheme that celebrates good local design and conservation as nominated and evaluated by local people. The Awards are supported by the Scottish Government.

The My Place Award project category recognises buildings, landscapes, public realm and civic projects that have had a positive impact in local neighbourhoods and delivered tangible benefits to their communities.

Judges said: “The North Edinburgh Grows project is both inspiring and humbling. In the face of many challenges the designers, client and local community have transformed an unloved bit of land into a remarkable resource for local residents and visitors. It is exactly the sort of project which the My Place Awards were set up to acknowledge – inventive, playful, life-enhancing and civil-minded. It is a worthy winner.”

North Edinburgh Arts Director Kate Wimpress was delighted to receive the award on behalf of the project. She said: “NEA and the North Edinburgh Grows team would like to thank all members of the community and local organisations who have contributed so much to the success of the garden.

Walk from North Edinburgh Arts (NEA) to the Gallery of Modern Art

Leaving from NEA at 1.15pm

Please arrive 10 minutes before
If you’re coming from the High School, we’ll meet you on Pennywell Road at 1.20pm
Primary school age participants are welcome to come to NEA direct from school and wait in a supervised lunch / activity space (with art materials!)
If you would like to be collected from school, please phone to arrange

On the Walk:
The walk will take about an hour and a half. Valla, our garden coordinator at NEA will be with us to show us edible plants and tell us about the environment of the cycle path and walk way.

Artist Mark Kirkham (http://edinburghsketcher.com/) will help us sketch all kinds of things along the way.

Art materials, cameras, waterproofs provided.

We will also be leaving the walkway cleaner than we find it; with special litter grabbers provided! Scooters are a good idea for young ones who may find the walk a bit long. Please NO bikes!

At the Gallery of Modern Art:

We’ll wash hands and have snacks and something hot to drink
Draw, photograph and play in the grounds of the gallery
Split into small groups for a look around the exhibitions (with activities).

Afterwards

Head across the road to GMA 2, and through the amazing Dean Cemetery – perfect spot for a bit more sketching and photography – and catch the 37bus home (from Queensferry Road).

Back at North Edinburgh Arts by around 5.30pm (We will notify parents of any change by text).

This activity is for ALL AGES; individuals AND families.

Lallie Wilson exhibition at North Edinburgh Arts

Lallie Wilson: Exhibition Opening Invite

North Edinburgh Arts is pleased to present the first major painting exhibition by the artist Lallie Wilson. Based in Musselburgh, Lallie has a body of mixed media artworks and colourful paintings. The exhibition portrays Lallie’s life story; from a young girl in wartime Britain, to a woman still painting many years later.

Daily opening times of exhibition:

Monday 10am – 5pm
Tuesday – Thursday 10am – 7pm (except Thursdays 1-5pm)

The exhibition will run until 27 April.

Granton Castle Walled Garden exhibition

Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden are staging an exhibition at North Edinburgh Arts to publicise their efforts to retain the historic green space from development.

Friends group member Kirsty Sutherland said: “North Edinburgh Arts centre staff really pulled out all the stops and helped us put up an exhibition on the walled garden’s story. Thank you Caroline for all your patience and perseverance, it looks fab! Thank you to Friends Group members for pitching in.

“We used some of the old and new images of the garden, maps, photos, a few flowers, some captions and a timeline: go see!

“We are hoping this will help raise awareness locally and let more folk join the group, add their ideas and strength to the campaign to safeguard the garden first, and then to help restore it for community use.

“Membership forms have been put out too – and there are lovely new flower power boxes to deposit filled out forms. We decided to make membership of the group free for the first year so no cash please!”

House Full! Community theatre production is a sellout!

All three performances of North Edinburgh Theatre project’s ‘1d tenement opera‘ production have sold out.

Yes, tickets were free so technically the tickets haven’t exactly ‘sold out’ but you know what I mean – there are no tickets left!

If you do have a ticket for any of the performances, lucky you – I believe you’re in for a real treat. If you don’t have a ticket it’s worth checking with the Box Office just in case there are any returns – good luck! And finally, if you do have tickets but find yourself unable to attend – hand your tickets back in as someone will snap them up!

The show premieres tonight in North Edinburgh Arts and runs until Saturday. Best wishes to the cast and crew – break a leg, as they say in this wonderful business called show!

The 1d Tenement Opera is a story based on the lives of people who have lived in a tenement in Edinburgh over two centuries. The tenement eventually became part of Edinburgh Corporation’s Slum Clearance Programme, some of the tenements were sold for just 1d (an old penny), and in 1959 one of the last tenements collapsed and a little boy was killed. Local people told stories of being in the bath and the end of the room falling away, others spoke of desperately trying to save their babies and children as the floor boards started to slope away from under them. This was known as the Penny Tenement collapse.

The 1d Tenement Opera is devised with the local people of North Edinburgh, some of whose families had been living in the city centre before the Slum Clearance Programme.

North Edinburgh Theatre project is delighted to be working with the following artists for this project: designer Ali Maclaurin, musical director Lynda Peachey, dancer and choreographer Monica de Ioanni, and dramaturg Lynne Clark. Stephanie Knight is the project director.

And it’s not even a penny, it’s free!

What is the 1d Tenement Opera?

Local people told stories of being in the bath and the end of the room falling away, others spoke of desperately trying to save their babies and children as the floor boards started to slope away from under them. This was known as the Penny Tenement collapse.

The 1d Tenement Opera is devised with the local people of North Edinburgh, some of whose families had been living in the city centre before the Slum Clearance Programme.

The North Edinburgh Theatre project was developed in 2011 after research into the requirements of local people. The main finding of this research was that local people wanted to make theatre again, after a history of using theatre and other art forms to create work which highlights their community and its needs and aspirations. In November 2011 North Edinburgh Theatre project developed Yes We CanCan – a Cabaret of Resistance which was the cementing of the project.

Since then, North Edinburgh Theatre project has participated in a number of performances including Theatre Uncut in 2012 & 2013 and the project regularly offers Sharing-of-Work and Work-in-Progress events. The opportunity to develop 1d Tenement Opera through the support of the People’s Health Trust is an exciting and important development for North Edinburgh. It supports the participants’ aspirations and hard work for well-being and full creative lives, making strong contributions to their own communities as well as participating in the North Edinburgh Theatre project.
