The Edinburgh Festivals will receive a £10 million boost over the next five years, the First Minister has confirmed. A bronze baby elephant sculpture has been chosen as the preferred memorial for Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens by parents affected by historic practices at Mortonhall Crematorium. The sculpture, which will be created by renowned Kelpies sculptor Andy Scott, will stand approximately two metres high and be embossed with a coat of forget-me-not flowers to reinforce that the city will not forget. Extra £1 million per year to ensure ‘future success’ of Edinburgh’s festivals
The City of Edinburgh Council is proposing to create a legacy funding package for the city’s Festivals in their 70th anniversary year. The Council has agreed to invest an additional £1 million every year for five years to protect the legacy and strengthen the future of the city’s 11 major festivals towards a joint fund proposed to Edinburgh’s Festivals and the Scottish Government. The SNP – Labour coalition has published plans to deliver improved services for the Capital’s residents and communities. The ‘Programme for the Capital’, the proposed business plan for the Council for the next five years, is built around 52 commitments set out by the SNP and Labour groups in their coalition agreement.
A major project to restore Edinburgh’s historic Saughton Park got under way this week with the official start of a year-long programme of work. The milestone sees the culmination of five years’ effort to establish the park’s £5.2m redevelopment, which has been made possible thanks to £3.8 million of Heritage Lottery Funding. Dear Editor
This is a really hard letter for me to write, but I need to say goodbye to the amazing community of North Edinburgh. I’ve worked for what was Community Education, and then Community Learning and Development in Greater Pilton for over twenty years.
It’s been a total privilege to serve such a strong and proud community. There are too many people to mention, many of them gone now, but to every learner and activist I’ve supported in every group, each child, young person, family, management committee and partner, it’s been so special and I will miss you all so very much.
Thank you for putting up with me for all those years! Your community has taught me so much and I feel proud and blessed to have been able to work here. The Council’s ‘Transformation’ process has meant I’ve been moved to another part of the city. I wish you everything you’d wish for yourself,

A plan to improve the way the Council carries out road repairs is set to go before councillors this week. A report on the Roads Services Improvement Plan, which will be considered by the Transport and Environment Committee on Thursday, states that: “the Council needs to maintain a high-quality road network to ensure the safety of road users, to ensure road users can freely travel around our network and to protect the overall appearance of Edinburgh as a city”.
