City Bypass collision victim named

A pedestrian who died following a collision involving a car on the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass can be named as Michael Greens.

The incident happened around 5.10am on Saturday, 3 September, 2022, eastbound near the Straiton junction. Mr Greens, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family have issued the following statement through Police Scotland:

“Michael was an extremely sharp and intelligent man, who would astound and entertain us with his wit and knowledge.

“He was a student of science and history, with a passion for fitness and historical re-enactment.

“A joy to be around, he touched the hearts of those who knew him.

“He will be sorely missed by parents, Billy and Sadie, and brother, Daniel.”

The 39-year-old male driver of the BMW 3 Series car involved was uninjured.

The road was closed until around 12.40pm to allow for an investigation at the scene.

Sergeant Barry Sommerville of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the Michael’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances and I would ask anyone with information which could help to get in touch.

“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage which could help our investigation.

Police seek woman following vandalism and theft at Greyfriars Kirk

Police are appealing for information following the vandalism of a headstone and theft in Greyfriars Kirkyard.

The incident happened in Greyfriars Kirk, Candlemaker Row between 10.30am and 4.30pm on Sunday, 21 August, 2022.

Police Sergeant Charlotte Crerar of Gayfield Police Station said: “We are appealing for information following the vandalism and theft of a marble facing stolen from the headstone.

“We are keen to trace a woman who was seen in the area. She is described as being around 5ft 6 inches tall, with red/ginger hair and of slim build. She was wearing a striped purple and white top, black bottoms, lime green socks and trainers and spoke with an American accent.

“The headstone is of historic significance and is irreplaceable and anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident 0834 of Thursday, 25 August, 2022.”

Sheriffhall accident: victim dies in hospital

A man has died in hospital after he was struck by a car at Sheriffhall.

Joseph Wakeley of Edinburgh was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh after the incident on Millerhill Road near the Sheriffhall Roundabout around 9am on Thursday, 4 August.

He died in hospital during the afternoon of Saturday, 6 August (yesterday) .

His family have described him as “a loving son, father and brother” and asked that their privacy is respected.

The driver of the car was uninjured.

Sergeant Paul Ewing of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with Joseph’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I would urge anyone who may have information who has not yet spoken to an officer to get in touch.

Police innvestigate man behaving suspiciously on Portobello promenade

Police are appealing for information following an incident on Portobello Promenade on Sunday, 5 June.

Around 11.30pm, a woman was running along the Promenade when she saw the man who shouted at her. His behaviour alarmed the woman and she reported the matter to police.

The man is described as white, in his late 40s to early 50s. He was wearing a dark coloured jacket, light coloured trousers, a grey coloured flat cap. He had stubble and spoke with a local accent.

Constable Deering said: “We have been reviewing CCTV footage from this and the surrounding area, however, we have been unsuccessful in identifying this man and are asking members of the public to think back and consider if they were in the Promenade area between 11pm and midnight that Sunday.

“If you have any information, please do get in touch with us. Any small detail could assist us in our enquiries.”

Trinity incident: CCTV images released

Police are continuing to investigate an assault with intent to rob in the Trinity area. The incident took place at around 7.30pm on Sunday, 2 January, 2022 near the junction of South Trinity Road with Ferry Road.

A 13-year-old boy was walking with a friend on South Trinity Road when he was subjected to an attack.

As part of their investigations, officers are eager to trace the males shown in CCTV images who they believe may be able to assist with the investigation.

The males in the images are described as being in their mid-to-late teens and wearing dark coloured jogging bottoms and hooded tops or tracksuits.

In particular, officers are keen to speak to one of the males who is shown wearing a distinctive pink headband or hood. He is described as being aged 14 to 16 years old, Asian and about 5ft tall.

Officers would ask that any members of the public who recognise the males in the images or have any other information to contact them at the earliest opportunity.

Detective Constable William Doughty of Corstorphine CID said: “This incident left the victim understandably shaken and we are asking for the help of the public to identify those shown in the images as we believe that they may be able to assist with our enquiries.

“Anyone with information that can help our investigation, or who recognises anyone in the images, is urged to contact us or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.”

CCTV appeal following serious assault in Atik Nightclub

Police Scotland has released the image of a man they believe may hold information which might assist investigations into a serious assault in the VIP area of Atik Nightclub in West Tollcross at around 1.50am on 12 February 2022.


The male is described as being white, aged between 18 and 24, around 5ft 11in tall with dark-coloured brushed forward hair. He was wearing a red jumper, jeans and dark-coloured trainers.


Detective Sergeant Gary Smyth of Gayfield CID said: “I would urge the male, or anyone who has information relating to this male, depicted in this image to make contact with the Police.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police at Gayfield CID, Edinburgh via 101 quoting reference number 2134 of 18 February 2022.  Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be passed on anonymously.”

CCTV image released in connection with Hive nightclub assault

Police Scotland has released an image of a man officers believe may be able to assist in relation to enquiries into a serious assault in Edinburgh.

The incident happened at The Hive nightclub in Niddry Street around 1.35am on Friday, 10 September, 2021.

The man (pictured above) is described as white, aged in his early 30s, of medium build and with short hair. He has a distinctive tattoo sleeve on his right arm and another tattoo on one of his calves. He was wearing a baseball cap, a light-coloured t-shirt or polo shirt and shorts.

Detective Constable Craig Moran, of Edinburgh CID, said: “I would urge the man, or anyone who has information relating to him to make contact with the police.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 0205 of Friday, 10 September, 2021, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be passed anonymously.”

Fatal road crash near Balerno: Do you have information?

Road policing officers are appealing for information following a one car fatal road crash on the A70 near Balerno.

The incident happened around 7.05am on Saturday (16 April), and involved a black VW Passat.

Emergency services attended and the driver, a 58-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His family are aware.

Sergeant Nicola Young said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family of the man who died and our investigation to establish the full circumstances is ongoing.

“We are appealing to anyone who may have seen the vehicle before the crash or who has dash-cam footage that might help with our enquiries to get in touch.”

Police appeal following Ibrox disorder

Police Scotland is appealing for information following a number of incidents surrounding Sunday’s Old Firm game.

Officers responded around 2.45am on Sunday (3 April) following a large group attending at Ibrox Stadium where different areas of the stadium were vandalised.

Three men aged 18, 22 and 25 have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident and enquiries remain ongoing to trace others involved.

During the match, a number of missiles were directed from the stands including two separate incidents where glass bottles were thrown towards the pitch.Around 12.50pm, a glass bottle was thrown towards the field of play from the Copland Road Stand that resulted in a delay to the second half starting.

A second incident took place where another glass bottle was thrown and struck a Celtic staff member who required medical assistance.

Assistant Chief Constable Mark Williams said: “The disorder and violence shown during the game on Sunday was completely unacceptable.

“All the relevant authorities must work together and with genuine fans to prevent incidents such as this in future. There is no place in Scottish football for this type of behaviour.

“We are continuing enquiries into a number of incidents that took place during the game, which includes the serious assault of a Celtic physiotherapist who was hit with a glass bottle.

“We would ask anyone with information to contact police via 101.”

Cramond pitbull attack: Eighty year old man arrested

** UPDATE **

An 80-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a six-year-old child being attacked by a dog on Cramond beach which happened around 5pm on Friday, 18 March, 2022.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a child was bitten by a dog at about 5pm last Friday (18 March 2022) at Cramond Beach.

A 6-year-old girl was walking on Cramond Beach with 3 older teenage family members when a black Pitbull dog wearing a blue and white collar knocked her over and bit her to her face, body and arms.

The girl required medical attention.

The man in charge of the dog is described as white, about 60 years old, 6 feet tall, average build, white beard, wearing a red baseball cap, a long black coat and blue jeans.

Anyone who recognises the description of this man is urged to call 101 quoting reference 2853 of 18 March 2022.
