Appeal for information following fatal crash on the City Bypass

POLICE are appealing for information following a fatal crash on the A720 at Dreghorn yesterday.

Around 12.50pm on Thursday, 21 December, police were called to a report of a three vehicle crash on the City Bypass involving a white Ford Kuga and two HGVs.

Emergency services attended and the 68-year-old female driver of the Kuga was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 37-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man, who were passengers in the car, were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

The road was closed while investigations were carried out and fully re-opened around 3.35pm.

Sergeant Paul Ewing said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who died as a result of this crash.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and I would ask anyone who witnessed the crash or the car prior to the crash, who have not already spoken to police to contact us.

“I would also appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have dash cam footage which could assist to get in touch.”

Appeal for information following serious assault in Sighthill

Police are appealing for information in connection with a serious assault which took place in the Sighthill area on Saturday (26 November, 2022).

Officers received a report that a 23-year-old woman was assaulted on the Calder Road flyover of the City of Edinburgh bypass at around 8pm.

Detective Inspector Barry McDaid said: “Despite the late hour this area was busy with traffic and is well-lit. It is likely someone will have seen this incident or may have captured it on a dashcam.

“I urge people to contact us with any information they believe may assist our investigation by calling 101, quoting reference number 3265 of Saturday, 26 November 2022. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Appeal for witnesses following early morning police pursuit in Edinburgh

Road policing officers in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after a car was seen travelling the wrong way on the A720 Edinburgh City bypass and later refused to stop.

Around 1.10am this morning (Tuesday, 11 October, 2022), officers received a report of the movements of a blue Vauxhall Astra car.

Roads policing officers attended and following a pursuit, deployed tactics to bring the car to a stop on the M9 between Junction 1A and 2.

The M9 was closed at 2am and reopened shortly after 5.30am.

Three police officers were taken to Forth Valley Hospital to be checked over.

Inspector Stephen Quinn said: “Our enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the vehicle which failed to stop are ongoing.

“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed this vehicle’s movements or was in the area around the time of the pursuit to contact police.

“Also, anyone with dash-cam footage which could assist our investigation should get in touch.”

City Bypass collision victim named

A pedestrian who died following a collision involving a car on the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass can be named as Michael Greens.

The incident happened around 5.10am on Saturday, 3 September, 2022, eastbound near the Straiton junction. Mr Greens, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family have issued the following statement through Police Scotland:

“Michael was an extremely sharp and intelligent man, who would astound and entertain us with his wit and knowledge.

“He was a student of science and history, with a passion for fitness and historical re-enactment.

“A joy to be around, he touched the hearts of those who knew him.

“He will be sorely missed by parents, Billy and Sadie, and brother, Daniel.”

The 39-year-old male driver of the BMW 3 Series car involved was uninjured.

The road was closed until around 12.40pm to allow for an investigation at the scene.

A pedestrian has died following a collision involving a car on the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass yesterday.

The 25-year-old male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 39-year-old male driver of the BMW 3 Series car involved was uninjured.

Police appeal following hit and run on City Bypass

Road policing officers are appealing for information after a man was hit by a car which failed to stop on the Edinburgh City Bypass. The incident happened on the A720 westbound near the Lothianburn Junction shortly after 1.15am this morning (Sunday 3 October).

The 31-year-old man had stopped his Volkswagen car on the on-slip road to repair a puncture when he was struck by a vehicle. This vehicle failed to stop and continued on the City Bypass in the direction of the Dreghorn Junction.

The man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment to serious injuries.The road reopened shortly before 4am following an investigation.

Sergeant Jennifer Forbes of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said: “Following our investigation at the scene, we believe the vehicle involved is in this incident was a white Audi Q3 or Q4 car and it will have obvious collision damage to the front bodywork.

“I would urge anyone who believes they may have seen a vehicle matching this description or something similar to get in touch.

“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who was on the City Bypass early on Sunday morning and may have dashcam footage to come forward.“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 0282 of 3 October.”

Witness appeal following serious road crash at Hermiston Gait

Road policing officers in Edinburgh are appealing for information after a motorbike crashed near the Hermiston Gait roundabout, just off the A720 city bypass.

The incident happened around 9.30am this morning (Wednesday 11 August) when two motorbikes, a blue BMW RT1200 and a black Harley Davidson, were travelling on the roundabout near the slip road towards the Calder Road junction. 

The BMW motorbike left the roadway, ending up on the grass verge.  The 49-year old male rider was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with a serious leg injury.

Sergeant Jill Kirkpatrick said: “We are trying to establish what has happened to cause this motorbike to leave the road and to clarify if any other vehicles were involved. 

“We are keen to speak to anyone driving in the area at the time. We would also appeal to anyone with dash-cam footage that may help with our collision investigation to get in touch.

Man charged following City Bypass drugs seizure

At round 6.30pm on Monday (7 June), Police Scotland Officers acting on intelligence stopped a Volkswagen van on the A720, Edinburgh city bypass at Old Craighall.

During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered a large quantity of heroin and cocaine as well as mixing/bulking agents.

The drugs have an estimated combined street value of £73,000. A 47-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the recovery and is due to appear before Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (Wednesday 9 June).

A full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Police appeal after van driver fails to stop after collision on bypass

Appeal to trace van driver who hit car on city bypass and drove off

Police are asking the driver of a white van which was involved in a minor crash with a black BMW on the A720, city bypass, just before the Old Craighall junction, to get in touch.

The incident happened at around 5.25pm on Thursday, 6 May as both vehicles were driving eastbound. The driver of a white Renault van has cut in from lane two to lane one and on doing so has hit the BMW, causing damage to vehicle and then continued on its journey east on the A720. The driver and his teenage passenger in the car were uninjured.

Anyone who was driving on the A720 on Thursday evening and could have dash cam footage of the incident, or who saw either vehicle prior too, or after the collision, if asked to contact officers.

The driver of the van is asked to contact police as soon as possible. Those who can help should contact Police Scotland via 101 and quote incident number 2417 of 6 May

Police issue warning to motorists

Road Policing Officers are warning motorists of the consequences of driving on restricted carriageways.

At around 2.30pm on Saturday 31st August, police responded to a road collision on the A720 (city bypass) westbound carriageway between Gilmerton and Lasswade.

During this incident a temporary road closure was put in place, but police  officers observed a number of individuals opting to drive the wrong way on the slip-road towards Gilmerton, to avoid the stationary traffic.

Ten motorists were charged with dangerous driving as a result and others are now being reminded that they will face similar action if they drive in a manner, which puts themselves or others at risk.


Inspector Roger Park from the Road Policing Unit in Edinburgh said: “While we fully appreciate the frustration caused when you are stuck in traffic, be it as a result of an accident, or general congestion, it is entirely unacceptable to drive the wrong way or on un-permitted areas, in an attempt to avoid delays.

“Such action increases your chances of being involved in a collision and it will not be tolerated.

“We are out on patrol, monitoring the road network on a daily basis and if you are found to be committing such an offence, you can expect to be charged.”
