Pedestrian death: Police seek witnesses to Oxgangs accident

The pedestrian involved in a collision with a bus on Oxgangs Road North, Edinburgh on Friday, 16 February, 2024 has died.

Officers were called to the crash, near the junction with Oxgangs Avenue, around 8.50pm.

The 74-year-old male pedestrian was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious injuries and died on Thursday, 22 February.

He’s been named as Andrew Grant from Edinburgh. Andrew’s family have released the following statement via Police Scotland:

“Devastatingly, and after a week of fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit at Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary, our Dad, Husband, Brother, Uncle, Papa, passed away at 7:03pm last night.

‘We, as a family, have had the most tragic and heartbreaking week, so please live today like it’s your last, because tomorrow may never come. We ask that our privacy is respected.”

Officers are continuing to appeal for information and are particularly keen to trace members of the public who provided assistance before emergency services arrived.

Road Policing Sergeant Louise Birrell said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr Grant at this difficult time. We will continue to offer them support as our investigations progress.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has come forward with information so far. There are a number of people we’re still keen to trace who witnessed what happened. Particularly those who provided first aid to Andrew at the scene. It’s believed they were wearing military uniforms. I’d urge them to get in touch with us.

“Anyone who saw what happened or has dashcam footage of the Oxgangs Road North area around the time is asked to contact police.”

Man who died following Granton Crescent disturbance named by Police

Charles Paul, 69, was found with serious injuries after officers were called to a property in Granton Crescent around 11.20pm on Saturday, 25 March, 2023. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 36-year-old woman was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, 27 March, 2023.

Dumbiedykes death: Victim named

The 18-year-old, who can be named as Lewis McCartney, was found with serious injuries on Viewcraig Street around 3.45am on Sunday, 12 February. He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh but died a short time later.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death. He is expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (Wednesday, 15 February).

Detective Inspector George Calder, of the Major Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts are very much with Lewis’ family and friends. They’ve asked their privacy be respected at this very difficult time.

“I would like to thank the public for their assistance with our investigations.”

City Bypass collision victim named

A pedestrian who died following a collision involving a car on the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass can be named as Michael Greens.

The incident happened around 5.10am on Saturday, 3 September, 2022, eastbound near the Straiton junction. Mr Greens, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family have issued the following statement through Police Scotland:

“Michael was an extremely sharp and intelligent man, who would astound and entertain us with his wit and knowledge.

“He was a student of science and history, with a passion for fitness and historical re-enactment.

“A joy to be around, he touched the hearts of those who knew him.

“He will be sorely missed by parents, Billy and Sadie, and brother, Daniel.”

The 39-year-old male driver of the BMW 3 Series car involved was uninjured.

The road was closed until around 12.40pm to allow for an investigation at the scene.

Sergeant Barry Sommerville of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the Michael’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“Our enquiries are continuing to establish the full circumstances and I would ask anyone with information which could help to get in touch.

“We would also be keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage which could help our investigation.

Man dies in hospital after collision involving car on Colinton Road

A man has died in hospital following a road traffic collision in Edinburgh last Saturday (30 July).

Paul McGlade, 35, from Edinburgh was struck by a black Mercedes A Class car on Colinton Road while he was on foot around 11.35pm.

He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he died on Tuesday, 2 August.

The 20-year-old male driver of the car was uninjured.

Sergeant Paul Ewing said: “Our thoughts are with Paul’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances which led to this incident and I would urge anyone who may have information but has not yet spoken to an officer to get in touch.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting reference 4406 of Saturday, 30 July, 2022.”

“What will we do without you Xander?”

Police in Edinburgh have confirmed the identity of the toddler who died following a crash in Morningside.

Xander Irvine (3) suffered fatal injuries following the collision when he was struck by a car travelling on Morningside Road around 2.30pm on Tuesday (30 June).

In a statement released through Police Scotland, the family said: “Xander Paul Thomas Irvine, 3-years old, was out for a walk in Morningside with his mother on Tuesday afternoon when a tragic accident occurred.

“Xander was a very happy, bubbly, intelligent little boy who was very dearly loved by his parents Victoria and Paul. Xander was a real chatterbox who just loved books, playing with all sorts of vehicles and his Lego. He really enjoyed life and he enriched the lives of everyone he met.

“Victoria and Paul are devastated and feel as if their hearts have been ripped out. Xander will be so very sorely missed by them both and all his family and friends in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“His parents would like to thank the paramedics, police, the fire and rescue service and members of the public for their help at the scene of the accident. Also, thank you to all the hospital staff and the police liaison for their help and to the public for their support to both Victoria and Paul and their families.

“What will we do without you Xander?”

Inspector Roger Park of Edinburgh City Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts remain with the family of Xander at this incredibly difficult time.

“Enquiries into the crash are ongoing, a full forensic collision investigation was carried out at the time and officers continue to look at CCTV and dash-cam footage as well as tracing and speaking to witnesses who have come forward.

“The 37-year-old pedestrian, Xander’s mother, also injured in the incident has now been discharged from hospital following treatment.

“I can also confirm that the driver of the Red Kia, a 91-year-old woman, was uninjured.

“I wish to express my sincere thanks to the members of the public who intervened and assisted in the immediate aftermath of this tragic incident and to the police and other Emergency Services who were on the scene.

“Finally, I would like to reiterate my request to respect the privacy of all those involved and allow them to, in some way, come to terms with what has happened.”
