Evaluation exercise

I will be handing over to Adam Farquhar at the beginning of November as I go on maternity leave. It would really help us to reflect on the forum and plan for future activities if you were able to fill in the attached evaluation form and return it to me.

Lorna drums up a day to remember at Muirhouse Library

20161010_115012_resized

Muirhouse and Granton libraries held an event with Lorna Liverpool, author of the wonderful children’s book ‘A Dance to Remember’ on Monday. The event is part of the libraries’ celebration of Black History Month which began on the 1st of October and runs until the end of the month.

Lorna demonstrated African drumming and performed stories with arts and crafts for local  primary school children – giving everyone a great opportunity to learn about the African drum’s significance in African culture, and of course to make some noise!

The children were joined by the local Living in Harmony group for Lorna’s session, making it a day to remember for all at Muirhouse Library.

Thanks to Declan McCann, team leader at Muirhouse Library, for the pictures

Living in Harmony: understanding hate crime

Living in Harmony logo

The next Living in Harmony forum will be on Thursday 13th October, 10-12 at Pilton Community Health Project. There will be crèche available if booked in advance.

The theme of the session will be on understanding hate crime and we will have input from the police and from another project working with young people on hate crime in North Edinburgh. There will be an opportunity to explore what hate crime is, discuss how to raise awareness about it among our communities, and also to sign up your organisation to become a third party reporting centre.

It would be helpful if you could RSVP so that we have an idea of numbers.

Kind regards

Participants will explore the issues of recognising the risks of HBV and how to effectively respond to these. Please see attached leaflets for more information. If you would like to attend the free training please contact Hannah on 0131 5511671 or by emailing hannahkitchen@pchp.org.uk

As part of a project with the other RECs in Scotland ELREC are launching a survey addressed to people who have been victims of hate crime about the kind of support they have received and what additional support they could have benefitted from. Dear all,

Forum discussion

Thank you to everyone who participated in the last forum meeting. There was a good discussion and lots of good ideas to follow up on, including how we can make North Edinburgh an area of excellence in terms of diversity in employment. I’m attaching the minutes (below). The next forum meeting will be on Thursday 12th October from 10 – 12 noon.

Minutes 18th august 2016

Race report

I’m also including a summary of a recent report produced by the Equality and Human Rights Commission which Douglas Samuel shared. This highlights further the worrying inequalities present in many walks of life, employment being one of them.

Race Report: Healing a Divided Britain

Scotland’s Ethnic Minorities face overcrowding, poverty and unemployment, says equality and human rights body

A new report published by the Equality and Human Rights Commission on race equality, has found that in Scotland, if you are born into an ethnic minority household today, you are nearly four times more likely to be in a household that is overcrowded and up to twice as likely to be living in poverty and experiencing unemployment.

The report is the biggest ever analysis of existing evidence into race equality in Scotland and focuses on poverty, education, employment, and housing.

Findings include:

  • In 2013 ethnic minority households were four times more likely than White households to live in overcrowded properties – 11.8% compared with 2.9%.
  • In 2013/14 people from ethnic minorities were more twice as likely live in poverty, both before and after housing costs, compared to ‘White-British’ people.
  • After housing costs, 36% of people from ethnic minorities were in poverty, compared with 17% of ‘White-British’ people.
  • Unemployment rates for people from ethnic minorities in 2013 were significantly higher than for White people – 13.2% compared with 6.9%.
  • In 2013, only 57.4% of people from ethnic minorities were in work compared with 73.8% of White people.
  • Unemployment rates for people from ethnic minorities in 2013 were significantly higher than for White people – 13.2% compared with 6.9%.
  • Just 2.1% of modern apprenticeships are filled by ethnic minorities although 5% of the target group for apprenticeships across Scotland are from ethnic minority groups. (Skills Development Scotland, Q1 2016).
  • Just 6% of Black school leavers from across GB attended a Russell Group university (Edinburgh and Glasgow), compared with 12% of mixed and Asian school leavers and 11% of white school leavers.
  • 1 in 4 Scottish pupils said they were aware of peers suffering prejudice based bullying.

I’m writing to give you some information about upcoming events in the area, and to outline a plan for the next forum meeting on Thursday 18th August, 10-12 at Pilton Community Health Project.

– Living in Harmony – topics for upcoming forum meetings; training sessions we could organise in the future
– Hate crime reporting – how do we increase understanding of hate crime and enable people to report a crime? Plans for Third Party Reporting training.

Please RSVP and feel free to suggest other items for the agenda by replying to this email.

NO rise in race incidents in Edinburgh following referendum result

police hat

Local Police Inspector David Happs attended yesterday’s Living in Harmony forum to listen to community concerns of recent racist incidents in North Edinburgh – none of which were reported to police.

Following the meeting, Inspector Happs made some enquiries of his own and has responded to the group:

All,

Thank you to those that attended the meeting this afternoon, I hope you found my input and associated discussion useful.

As discussed and in response to the email below the initial figures that I have for Edinburgh show there has actually been slightly less reported hate crimes and incidents in the period after the referendum, none of which can be directly attributed to the referendum result, than were experienced in the same time period before the result.

However, I am aware through contact with some of you there is an element of under-reporting of hate crimes and such incidents. We continue to work hard locally and nationally to address this and I am grateful to those who expressed an interest in establishing further 3rd party reporting centres in Edinburgh.

I hope this work alongside your support in encouraging victims to come forward and our continued engagement with our diverse communities will provide an accurate picture of hate crime in Edinburgh and assist Police Scotland in tackling it.

With regard to offering reassurance to local communities Chief Inspector Alastair Muir of our National Safer Communities Department recently issued the following message:

“Police Scotland continues to monitor all types of hate crimes and incidents and we have noted no significant rise in reported incidents or crimes since the EU Referendum. It is recognised that these types on incidents often go un-reported and would encourage individuals and communities to report concerns in person, via Third Party Reporting Centres or online.  Our role as a police service is to ensure that all our communities are safe and feel protected and all reports of hate crime, extremism or violence are robustly investigated, with those responsible brought to justice. Police Scotland does not tolerate hatred, extremism or violence in any form.”

More information about what constitutes a hate crime, how to report a hate crime and use of our 3rd party reporting centres can be found on our website. Our non-emergency telephone number is 101 and in an emergency you should always call 999.

http://www.scotland.police.uk/contact-us/hate-crime-and-third-party-reporting/

Further information will follow in due course and I will keep you updated accordingly. In the meantime please do not hesitate to contact me should you wish to discuss further.

Community Action North is to organise a community event around the issue – details to follow

Living in Harmony forum: Addressing inequality in employment

banjo

Addressing Inequality in Employment forum meeting

29th June 1.30-4pm at Spartans Community Football Academy

Employment is a big issue for many people in North Edinburgh. Research in the recent Framework for Racial Equality highlighted that BME people are underrepresented in many areas. How should organisations address this?

We will have a guest speaker from the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights giving an overview of the current inequalities and how these could be addressed. We will also hear from organisations, including Port of Leith Housing, that have reviewed their recruitment practices to try to make them more accessible or to reach out to specific groups.

Local BME residents who have been supported by Community Renewal to find work or start businesses will share their experiences. There will be a chance to exchange ideas and discuss ways of moving forward both collectively and as individual organisations or residents. Lunch and crèche included. Please RSVP.
