Love music? Come hear the Community Choir!

Edinburgh’s very own Love Music Community Choir (LMCC) are performing at the Usher Hall tonight (Tuesday) at 7.30pm and some tickets are still available.

LMCC was established to encourage Edinburgh residents of all abilities to sing, and it’s been a huge success – the ensemble is now the UK’s biggest community choir.

LMCC plan an evening of music to inspire and entertain, and with songs from Irving Berlin to Puccini, Jamaican Ska to Mexican Bolero, Latin Rumba, Gospel and Rufus Wainwright in there too there’s truly something for everyone!

Conductor is Stephen Deazley, pianist Dave Milligan with special guest musicians Dougie Hudson on drums and percussion and Andy Cooke on Ugandan instruments.

The concert will last approximately 90 minutes. Tickets are£3 | Free to under 16 or unwaged. £1 transaction fee when booking online / phone. Tonight’s event is supported by the Usher Hall and The City of Edinburgh Council.

Fishing Folk sail into Newhaven this month

Fishing Folk

Since earliest times, Newhaven has been famous for its fishing, its shipbuilding and its unique cultural traditions, celebrated through song and photography. As part of Fishing Folk, Citizen Curator is working with contemporary folk musician

Jed Milroy and artist Johnny Gailey to raise awareness of the importance of this heritage.

Events in March:

Friday 7 March, 12 – 1pm at the Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop in Newhaven

Working Lunch – an occasional get together – with Johnny Gailey.

Johnny will talk about his work as an artist, educator and curator. As part of Fishing Folk, Johnny will be rediscovering the lost sea and communities of Newhaven.

This event is open to all

Soup of the day will be – Auld Reekie (veggie cock-a-leekie)

Can Broughton’s Anna be The Voice?

Talented Broughton High School pupil Anna McLuckie will be flying the flag for Edinburgh when the new series of The Voice starts tonight on BBC1.

It’s already been an epic journey for the Stockbridge girl, who has secretly been travelling south for sessions with the programme’s production team since she was invited to take part last autumn. Anna has been accompanied throughout the process by her mum Fiona, who is an advice worker in West Granton, so the reason for their mysterious disappearances can now at last be revealed!

Seventeen year old Anna is a gifted musician, specialising in playing the harp, but tonight’s viewers will hear that Anna has a stunning singing voice too when she performs Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky’.

Tudor Morris, Director of The City of Edinburgh Music School based at Broughton, said: “We all wish Anna all the best for The Voice and are confident that she will do us proud. Anna has always been an exceptional student and will get tremendous support from all her friends and teachers at the music school and Broughton.”

Will Anna wow judges Will.I.Am, Tom Jones, Kylie Minogue and Kaiser Chief singer Ricky Wilson? You’ll have to tune in at 7pm to find out!

Friday is North Edinburgh’s Big Night Out

Join North Edinburgh community activists – and special guest Scotland’s national poet Liz Lochhead – for a night of poetry, protest, music and laughter at North Edinburgh Arts this Friday …

Liz Lochhead to be part of North Edinburgh’s Big Night Out

Scotland’s national poet Liz Lochhead will be among the participants at a major community event to be held in North Edinburgh later this month. ‘The Big Night Out’, an evening of songs, fun, poetry and protest, is being organised by the local Power to the People group.

The programme is yet to be finalised, but the event will also feature a photography and artwork exhibition.

CLD worker Lynn McCabe, who supports the group, explained: “There’s going to be a couple of exhibitions on the history of protest (one is a photographic exhibition, the other is being put together by arts students from Edinburgh (Telford) College. The main part of the night will be in the theatre and will include protest poems and protest poetry. We have just had word that Liz Lochhead will be doing a turn which is great, and it’s likely that some pupils from Craigroyston High School will also be participating in the event – I’m meeting with their teacher to discuss this further. There’s still a lot to organise and confirm but the Power to the People group are very excited about The Big Night Out.”

Stevey Hay

Stevey Hay’s funeral will be held today at 12pm in Warriston’s Lorimer Chapel.

Stevey, a hugely talented musician, died of a heart attack on 3 July at the age of only 51.

Muirhouse man Stevey was well known locally as the welcoming face of Muirhouse Millennium Centre until he was made redundant last year, but his musical talents as a blues singer and guitarist from an early age ensured he would be appreciated by a wider audience on far bigger stages.

Stevey loved making music from an early age and formed his first band, The Eploited, in 1978 at the tender age of sixteen. He never really stopped playing since, and Stevey’s new band was due to appear alongside blues legend Muddy Waters’ son Mud Morganfield at Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival later this month with his new band, Stevey Hay’s Shades of Blue.

Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival producer Roger Spence said: “We were shocked and saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Stevey Hay.

“He was a much-loved regular performer at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival and was due to play in a headline show alongside Muddy Waters’ son in the festival this year. His unique brand of rocking, good-times blues will be a huge loss, not just to the festival, but to the blues world as a whole.”

A truly talented, friendly and warm guy, Stevey is survived by his wife Louise, daughter Jasmine and sons James and Steven.

Craigroyston Community High School will be staging ‘Alice in Wonderland’ TONIGHT at 7pm.

Marie McGarrol, drama worker at Craigroyston Community High School, said: “Craigroyston Community High School’s senior Drama club is putting on a public performance of Alice in Wonderland at the school tonight at 7pm, adult tickets £2, children’s tickets £1.50. The students involved would really appreciate any external support as the school as not seen a performance of this nature for many years. Arise, Sir Baldrick!

At last, a ‘cunning plan’ has come together – and in British honours system hierarchy Baldrick now outranks his master Blackadder! Blackadder actor Tony Robinson has been knighted while his co-star Rowan Atkinson receives a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Among the other well-known names to receive honours are Adele, Rob Brydon, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber, Clare Balding, golfer Paul Lawrie and former Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell, but the majority of recipients are unsung heroes – of the 1,180 people who appear on the Birthday Honours list, almost three-quarters are people who are actively engaged in charitable or voluntary work within their local communities.
