You are invited to the Sharing of Work – Severing Time – on Friday 24th June 7.30pm
This performance includes Theatre, Dance and Video work by the Adults and Children of the North Edinburgh Arts Theatre project.
Severing Time investigates the influence and resistance we have towards the pressure of advertising, media and social networks, and considers the challenges, disruptions and distortions to our well-being and sense of self that virtual encounters can create. The ‘self’ we manufacture for internet-based encounters can be reductive, dehumanising and commodifying. It can also be a reflection to find and reclaim ourselves.
Background and Development of the project
North Edinburgh Arts Theatre project is an established and well-recognised Theatre project for adults, and has a track record for exciting and innovative productions and events. The project was developed in 2011 after research into the requirements of local people. The main finding of this research was that people wanted to make theatre again, after a history of using theatre and other art forms to create work which highlights their community and its needs and aspirations.
The project supports the participants’ aspirations and hard work for well-being and full creative lives, making strong contributions to their own communities as well as participating in the North Edinburgh Arts Theatre project.
In November 2011 North Edinburgh Arts Theatre project developed Yes We CanCan – a Cabaret of Resistance, which was the cementing of the project. Since then, the project has participated in a number of performances including Theatre Uncut in 2012 & 2013 and it regularly offers Sharing-of-Work and Work-in-Progress events. The 1d Tenement Opera in January 2015 through the support of the People’s Health Trust was an exciting and important development for North Edinburgh, and since then, the film Remembering Today, which was made in October 2015, has been acclaimed and celebrated.
Now North Edinburgh Arts’ Theatre project is delighted to be joined by Festival and King’s Theatres Edinburgh Learning and Participation Coordinator for the next stage in the Project’s development. The Learning and Participation Coordinator is leading Drama Workshops for the children of participants, and welcomes wider participation from other children interested in drama and theatre.

Aussie comic raises £10,000 for Sick Kids charity
The Sick Kids Friends Foundation (SKFF) has benefited from the generosity of Fringe audiences at this year’s festival, after Australian comedian Adam Hills collected more than £10,000 for the children’s charity.
Adam Hills’ stand up show, Clown Heart, returned to the capital for its third year and was deemed a Fringe favourite. In between his time on stage, kind hearted comedian Adam braved the cold, standing outside the venue urging donations to the Foundation wearing nothing but pants and a dressing gown!
Adam’s Saltire underwear caught the attention of festival revellers on the Capital’s streets and encouraged a fantastic volume of donations across his week long string of sell-out performances.
Adam Hills said: “The Sick Kids Friends Foundation is an amazing organisation that does an incredible job. All I had to do was mention their name, then stand out the front of the venue with a bucket. The audience did the rest.
“They told me stories of friends, family or their own experiences with the Sick Kids. And they were all incredibly generous. It may have helped that I offered to disrobe for anything over five pounds.”
Rachel McKenzie, head of voluntary fundraising at the Sick Kids Friends Foundation, said: “We are extremely grateful that Adam chose the Sick Kids Friends Foundation to benefit from the incredibly generous donations his audience made across the week-long show.
“The Fringe is famous for bringing the best out in everyone that attends and it’s fantastic to see so many people dig deep and raise such a tremendous total.
“The funds are vital in supporting us to ensure nothing gets in the way of being a child for the thousands of youngsters who visit Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children each year. With the help of this generous donation we will continue to transform the experiences of children in hospital so they can be a child first and a patient later.”

‘Guid fer a Laugh’ takes a seriously funny look at Scottish comedy over the years. The course starts on Tuesday 6 October from 6 -8pm and runs for ten weeks (and maybe more if there are calls for an encore!)
A bit more highbrow (but only a wee bit!) is ‘An Introduction to the History of Scottish Theatre’. This free ten-week course starts on Monday 5 October from 1.30 – 3.30pm and includes theatre visits.
