MSPs want views on proposals that would give pupils a stronger voice in religious education decisions

Changes to the law which would give children a greater say in decisions around being withdrawn from religious instruction or observance in schools will be considered by a Scottish Parliament Committee, which has today launched a call for views on the proposals.

The Children (Withdrawal from Religious Education and Amendment of UNCRC Compatibility Duty) (Scotland) Bill would require schools to inform pupils if their parent has requested that they be withdrawn from religious education or observance.

It would also give pupils the opportunity to express their views and object to the withdrawal. Under the proposals, where a pupil objects, and is considered capable of forming a view, the school would be required to follow the pupil’s wishes.

In addition, the Bill, which was brought forward by the Scottish Government, seeks to clarify how public authorities should act when duties under the UNCRC conflict with other legal obligations.

The Parliament’s Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee wants to hear the views of children and young people, parents and carers, teachers, local authorities, human rights organisations and any stakeholders with an interest in the proposals.

Karen Adam MSP, Convener of the Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee, said: “This proposed change to the law would give children and young people more say in whether they want to take part in religious education or observance at school.

“It also aims to update how public bodies, like councils and schools, make sure they are respecting children’s rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“We want to hear what people across Scotland think about these changes. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, pupil, or just interested in children’s rights, we want to understand how these proposals might work in practice and what impact they could have.”

The Committee’s call for views opened on Friday (20 June 2025), and will be open until Monday 1 September 2025.

For this, we find great importance & delight in announcing the return of this year’s Edinburgh Climate Festival, a free festival that aims to celebrate & inspirate climate action in our local communities. A day that brings together numerous climate related organisations, projects and individuals, all looking to help positively raise awareness & work towards creating a brighter future!

 The festival will be taking place at the Edinburgh Meadows, Melville Dr EH9 1ND, on Saturday 28th June 2025, from 12 to 7pm.

During the day, attendees can find a variety of free lively performances, workshops, art installations & themed talks, as well as a bouncy castle and activities that welcome everyone of all ages.

The festival will also be welcoming stallholders that cover topics related to circular economy, mitigation, adaptation, climate education, transport, activism, conservation and more. 

As a special feature to the ninth edition of the festival, this year the team have introduced an additional theme: Root & Rise.

The theme represents a call to root in ourselves by grounding in who we are, reconnecting with nature, and prioritising our well-being. The festival defends that just as strong roots support a thriving tree, a deep connection to ourselves and the earth can allow us to rise with strength and purpose.

By truly rooting in nature, we find the power to rise – to embrace new sustainable habits, take meaningful action, and stand together in the fight for climate justice and systemic change. This message is present throughout the event, through visuals and tailored activities encompassing this ethos. 

As an additional attempt to become more sustainable as an event itself, this year the festival is also trialling a few new schemes in hopes to achieve better waste reduction & improve its practices overall.

A few to highlight, is their additional single use packaging fee that will be implemented by all food vendors as well as a free raffle that aims to encourage attendees to bring their own containers, rewarding their commitment by offering a chance to win one of three prizes (which are valued at £60, £50 and £40).

A legen-dairy weekend! The Royal Highland Show celebrates the best of Scottish farming

The Royal Highland Show 2025 was a spectacular celebration of Scotland’s agricultural heritage, innovation, food, drink and rural life.

With a sold-out Show on Saturday, this year’s event welcomed over 212,000 visitors from across the UK and beyond for four packed days of livestock competitions, cutting-edge farming innovation, family entertainment and traditional skills.

The Royal Highland Show which takes place at Ingliston, Edinburgh, is the biggest fundraising event for organisers, RHASS, (the Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland) with the week of the Show seeing the event site become the sixth-largest population centre in Scotland, bigger than Paisley and Dunfermline.

With 197 hectares of entertainment (the equivalent of 180 football pitches!) there was something for everyone to enjoy.

Children 15 and under were able to attend the Show for free and over 22,000 children attended over the four days. 

The energy didn’t stop there, over 7,400 people partied into the night on Friday and Saturday evening at the Royal Highland Hoolie, where an electric line-up of  country and folk stars including Elephant Sessions, Cammy Barnes, NATI and Nathan Carter had the crowd singing, dancing and celebrating in true Royal Highland Show style.

HRH Princess Anne visited the Show on Friday. Escorted by RHASS Chairman, James Logan, and Chief Executive, Alex Paterson.

HRH enjoyed a tour of the Show and stopped at the RHET Discovery Centre, where she met local primary school children taking part in activities such as pizza making and sushi rolling.

HRH also took in the excitement of the showjumping competition and toured the Cattle Hall, meeting the Short Horn Beef Cattle and Highland Cattle as well as visiting some exhibitors in the Dairy section.

The 2025 Royal Highland Show – facts and numbers:

  • 327 prestigious trophies and a prize fund of £195,000 were competed for and awarded at this year’s Show.
  • The Queen’s Cup, which was presented by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1960 to commemorate her presidency of the Royal Highland Show was, this year, awarded to champion goat, Messrs Webster and Smith with Guilden Elm. This is the 15th time in 45 years the pair have won the Queen’s Cup. The cup rotates annually among different livestock categories.
  • The Sanderson Trophy was won by Harry and Susan Sleigh, for the third time, which is a major mark of excellence in Scotland’s equine community.
  • Over 6,000 livestock were welcomed, including 700 cattle, 2,000 sheep, 400 heavy horses, 1,700 light horse entries, from 2,500 competitors.
  • Over 750 exhibitors, stretching across food, drink, clothing, artisanal crafts and agri-trade were in attendance.
  • The Sir William Young Award, which recognises exceptional contributions to the world of livestock breeding and celebrates the enduring legacy of the late Sir William Young, was presented to Jimmy Taylor Wilson.
  • Over 200 volunteer stewards were involved in the RHS, as well as 145 judges.
  • Some 6,600 school pupils from 250 school groups came along for free through RHET (Royal Highland Education Trust), trying their hand at milking Mabel the (fiberglass) cow, a wildlife gardening trail and pizza making in the RHET Discovery Centre.
  • Over 56,000 pints were poured over the four days, with 24,496 of those pints served up by the Show’s beer partner, Innis & Gunn.
  • The Show featured the “Guiness Ripple Machine” which helped to served-up thousands of pints topped with Royal Highland Show logo by using 3D printing technology to create what’s known as a ‘Stoutie’.
  • The classic burger was the most popular dish served up across the four-day event with 5,459 sold and visitors kept cool with ice cream with 8,634 sold.
  • 7,462 revellers enjoyed the toe-tapping Royal Highland Hoolie after the Show on Friday and Saturday. Presented by legendary country music promoters, Farmers Bash, the event brought together 12 live folk and country music acts, including Mànran, Trail West, The Whistlin’ Donkeys, Nathan Carter, Cammy Barnes, The Tumbling Paddies, Nati, and the Elephant Sessions.
  • Lothian Buses operated over 1,300 departures to and from the Royal Highland Show on service 97, 98 and N98. This year’s Show’s new elements:

This year’s Show’s new elements:

  • On Sunday the Members Village transformed into an entertainment zone with performers from the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Magic from Edinburgh Magician Eliot Bobby, and live music.
  • Sheepdog trials took place in the main ring.
  • Well-known children’s show, Tractor Ted appeared at the Show for the first time, 
  • Children jumped behind the wheel of a mini (Land) rover as part of the Show’s Land Rover Experience which has been a staple at the event for many years. The mini cars took drivers on their very own off-road adventure course, just like the grown-up version.
  • A World Record was set by Dan Wheelan from Shropshire who climbed the 80ft pole in 9 seconds, beating the previous record of 9.61.

Electricity bills to be slashed for over 7,000 businesses in major industry shake-up

Industrial Strategy sets out a ten-year plan to boost investment, create good skilled jobs and make Britain the best place to do business

  • Electricity costs for thousands of businesses to be slashed by up to 25%.
  • New Industrial Strategy to unlock billions in investment and support 1.1 million new well-paid jobs over the next decade.
  • Strategy developed in partnership with business, marking a new era of collaboration between government and high growth industries.
  • Strategy will make the UK the best country to invest in and grow a business, delivering on the Plan for Change.

More than 7,000 British businesses are set to see their electricity bills slashed by up to 25% from 2027, as the Government unveils its bold new Industrial Strategy today [Monday 23 June].

The modern Industrial Strategy sets out a ten-year plan to boost investment, create good skilled jobs and make Britain the best place to do business by tackling two of the biggest barriers facing UK industry – high electricity prices and long waits for grid connections.

British manufacturers currently pay some of the highest electricity prices in the developed world while businesses looking to expand or modernise have faced delays when it comes to connecting to the grid.

For too long these challenges have held back growth and made it harder for British firms to compete. Today’s announcement marks a decisive shift — with government stepping in to support industry and unlock the UK’s economic potential.

From 2027, the new British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme will reduce electricity costs by up to £40 per megawatt hour for over 7,000 electricity-intensive businesses in manufacturing sectors like automotive, aerospace and chemicals.

These firms, which support over 300,000 skilled jobs, will be exempt from paying levies such as the Renewables Obligation, Feed-in Tariffs and the Capacity Market — helping level the playing field and make them more internationally competitive. Eligibility and further details on the exemptions will be determined following consultation, which will be launched shortly.

The government is also increasing support for the most energy-intensive firms — like steel, chemicals, and glass — by covering more of the electricity network charges they normally have to pay through the British Industry Supercharger. These businesses currently get a 60% discount on those charges, but from 2026, that will increase to 90%. This means their electricity bills will go down, helping them stay competitive, protect jobs, and invest in the future.

This will help around 500 eligible businesses in sectors such as steel, ceramics and glass reduce their costs and protect jobs in industries that are the backbone of our economy and will be delivered at no additional cost to the taxpayer.

These reforms complement the government’s long-term mission for clean power, which is the only way to bring down bills for good by ending the UK’s dependency on volatile fossil fuel markets.

To ensure businesses can grow and hire without delay, the government will also deliver a new Connections Accelerator Service to streamline grid access for major investment projects — including prioritising those that create high-quality jobs and deliver significant economic benefits.

The government will work closely with the energy sector, local authorities, Welsh and Scottish Governments, trade unions, and industry to design this service, which we expect to begin operating at the end of 2025. New powers in the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, currently before parliament, could also allow the Government to reserve grid capacity for strategically important projects, cutting waiting times and unlocking growth in key sectors.

The Industrial Strategy is a 10-year plan to promote business investment and growth and make it quicker, easier and cheaper to do business in the UK, giving businesses the confidence to invest and create 1.1 million good, well-paid jobs in thriving industries – delivering on this government’s Plan for Change.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “This Industrial Strategy marks a turning point for Britain’s economy and a clear break from the short-termism and sticking plasters of the past.

“In an era of global economic instability, it delivers the long term certainty and direction British businesses need to invest, innovate and create good jobs that put more money in people’s pockets as part of the plan for change.

“This is how we power Britain’s future – by backing the sectors where we lead, removing the barriers that hold us back, and setting out a clear path to build a stronger economy that works for working people. Our message is clear – Britain is back and open for business.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said: ” The UK has some of the most innovative businesses in the world and our Plan for Change has provided them with the stability they need to grow and for more to be created.

“Today’s Industrial Strategy builds on that progress with a ten-year plan to slash barriers to investment. It’ll see billions of pounds for investment and cutting-edge tech, ease energy costs, and upskill the nation. It will ensure the industries that make Britain great can thrive. It will boost our economy and create jobs that put more money in people’s pockets.”

Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: “We’ve said from day one Britain is back in business under this government, and the £100 billion of investment we’ve secured in the past year shows our Plan for Change is already delivering for working people.

“Our Modern Industrial Strategy will ensure the UK is the best country to invest and do business, delivering economic growth that puts more money in people’s pockets and pays for our NHS, schools and military.

“Not only does this Strategy prioritise investment to attract billions for new business sites, cutting-edge research, and better transport links, it will also make our industrial electricity prices more competitive.

“Tackling energy costs and fixing skills has been the single biggest ask of us from businesses and the greatest challenge they’ve faced – this government has listened, and now we’re taking the bold action needed. Government and business working hand in hand to make working people better of is what this Government promised and what we will deliver.”

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “For too long high electricity costs have held back British businesses, as a result of our reliance on gas sold on volatile international markets.

“As part of our modern industrial strategy we’re unlocking the potential of British industry by slashing industrial electricity prices in key sectors.

“We’re also doubling down on our clean power strengths with increased investment in growth industries from offshore wind to nuclear. This will deliver on our clean power mission and Plan for Change to bring down bills for households and businesses for good.”

The Supercharger and British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme will be funded through reforms to the energy system. The government is reducing costs within the system to free up funding without raising household bills or taxes and intends to also use additional funds from the strengthening of UK carbon pricing, including as a result of linking with the EU carbon market.

We have set out an intention to link emissions trading systems, as part of our new agreement with the European Union to support British businesses. Without an agreement to do this, British industry would have to pay the EU’s carbon tax.

We intend to link our carbon pricing system with the EU’s, we will ensure that money stays in the UK—which allows us to support British companies and British jobs through these schemes.

Building on the Spending Review and the recently announced 10-Year Infrastructure Strategy, the Industrial Strategy is the latest step forward in our plans to deliver national renewal. It will include targeted support for the areas of the country and economy that have the greatest potential to grow, while introducing reforms that will make it easier for all businesses to get ahead.

The Strategy’s bold plan of action includes:

  • Slash electricity costs by up to 25% from 2027 for electricity-intensive manufacturers in our growth sectors and foundational industries in their supply chain, bringing costs more closely in line with other major economies in Europe.
  • Unlocking billions in finance for innovative business, especially for SMEs by increasing British Business Bank financial capacity to £25.6 billion, crowding in tens of billions of pounds more in private capital. The includes an additional £4bn for Industrial Strategy Sectors, crowding in billions more in private capital. By investing largely through venture funds, the BBB will back the UK’s most high-growth potential companies.
  • Upskilling the nation with an extra £1.2 billion each year for skills by 2028-29, and delivering more opportunities to learn and earn in our high-growth sectors including new short courses in relevant skills funded by the Growth and Skills Levy and skills packages targeted at defence digital and engineering.
  • Reducing regulatory burdens by cutting the administrative costs of regulation for business by 25% and reduce the number of regulators. 
  • Supporting 5,500 more SMEs to adopt new technology through the Made Smarter programme while centralising government support in one place through the Business Growth Service.
  • Boosting R&D spending to £22.6bn per year by 2029-30 to drive innovation across the IS-8, with more than £2bn for AI over the Spending Review, and £2.8bn for advanced manufacturing over the next ten years. This will leverage in billions more from private investors. Regulatory changes will further clear the path for fast-growing industries and innovative products such as biotechnology, AI, and autonomous vehicles.
  • Attracting elite global talent to our key sectors, via visa and migration reforms and the new Global Talent Taskforce.
  • Deepening economic and industrial collaboration with our partners, building on our Industrial Strategy Partnership with Japan and recent deals with the US, India, and the EU.
  • Reducing planning timelines and cutting costs for developers, by hiring more planners, streamlining pre-application requirements and combining environmental obligations, removing burdens on businesses as well as accelerating house building. 
  • Revolutionising public procurement and reducing barriers for new entrants and SMEs to bolster domestic competitiveness.
  • Supporting the UK’s city regions and clusters by increasing the supply of investible sites through a new £600m Strategic Sites Accelerator, enhanced regional support from the Office for Investment, National Wealth Fund, and British Business Bank, and more.

The plan focuses on 8 sectors where the UK is already strong and there’s potential for faster growth: Advanced Manufacturing, Clean Energy Industries, Creative Industries, Defence, Digital and Technologies, Financial Services, Life Sciences, and Professional and Business Services. Each growth sector has a bespoke 10-year plan that will attract investment, enable growth and create high-quality, well-paid jobs.

” It is particularly positive to see the strong focus on skills in areas such as engineering, technology and defence. Commitments such as £187 million for the TechFirst programme will ensure the UK has the skills it needs to support our growth industries and seize transformative opportunities like AI.”

Five sector plans have been published today:

  • Advanced Manufacturing – Backing our Advanced Manufacturing sector with up to £4.3 billion in funding, including up to £2.8 billion in R&D over the next five years, with the aim of anchoring supply chains in the UK – from increasing vehicle production to 1.35 million, to leading the next generation of technologies for zero emission flight.
  • Clean Energy Industries – Doubling investment in Clean Energy Industries by 2035, with Great British Energy helping to build the clean power revolution in Britain with a further £700 million in clean energy supply chains, taking the total funding for the Great British Energy Supply Chain fund to £1 billion.
  • Creative Industries – Maximizing the value of our Creative Industries through a £380 million boost for film and TV, video games, advertising and marketing, music and visual and performing arts will improve access to finance for scale-ups and increase R&D, skills and exports.
  • Digital and Technologies – Making the UK the European leader for creating and scaling Digital and Technology businesses, with more than £2 billion to drive the AI Action Plan, including a new Sovereign AI Programme, £187 million for training one million young people in tech skills and targeting R&D investment at frontier technologies such as cyber security in Northern Ireland, semiconductors in Wales and quantum technologies in Scotland. 
  • Professional and Business Services – Ensuring our Professional and Business Services becomes the world’s most trusted adviser to global industry, revolutionising the sector across the world through adoption of UK-grown AI and working to secure mutual recognition of professional qualifications agreements overseas.  

Amazon expands customer donation campaign with leading household brands to tackle hygiene poverty

  • New research shows that one in five adults in Scotland are worried about being able to afford basic hygiene products in the coming months.
  • Amazon’s You Buy. We Donate. initiative returns from now until 30 June, supporting The Big House Multibank, a charity co-founded by Amazon and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Every two eligible products purchased on Amazon.co.uk will trigger a third product donation at no extra cost to customers.
  • Campaign expected to deliver over 200,000 product donations to families across the UK.

Amazon has joined forces with its suppliers of well-known household brands including Reckitt, Unilever and Beiersdorf to deliver over 200,000 essential hygiene products to families in need via The Multibank charity.

The campaign will support The Big House Multibank. The Big House Multibank is headquartered in Fife and supports families across Scotland with operations in Dundee, Perth & Kinross and Edinburgh. 

For every two eligible products purchased by customers on Amazon between now and 30 June, Amazon and its supplier partners will donate a third item to The Multibank at no additional cost. All people have to do is visit this page on Amazon.

The campaign launches with new research, commissioned by Amazon, which reveals that a fifth (19%) of adults in Scotland are worried about being able to afford basic hygiene products, such as toothpaste, soap, or laundry detergent, over the coming months. The research also found that almost one in 10 adults in Scotland (7%) have rationed or avoided buying hygiene essentials.

Almost all (93%) of adults in Scotland highlighted that feeling clean and presentable is vital for their children’s confidence and mental wellbeing, particularly significant during the upcoming summer holiday period, when school-based support is less accessible.

The Multibank was co-founded by Amazon and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown in response to the high levels of poverty and deprivation he had witnessed in his local area in Fife, Scotland.

This latest campaign builds on the successful launch of the ‘You Buy. We Donate.’ initiative in January, which saw more than 200,000 hygiene essentials donated to Multibanks across the UK

Strategy to be published after ‘disappointing’ UK Spending Review settlement

A Medium Term Financial Strategy will be set out next week in the aftermath of a “disappointing” UK Spending Review and welfare reforms that will reduce Scotland’s budget.

Finance Secretary Shona Robison will outline the five-year strategy and accompanying action plan to ensure public money is focused on Scottish Government priorities.

The Finance Secretary said: “This government has delivered a balanced budget every year while taking steps to improve the overall sustainability of our finances. This is despite a deeply challenging financial situation caused by rising global instability, persistent higher inflation and over a decade of UK austerity.

“Our disappointing settlement at the recent UK Spending Review has made the situation worse, short-changing the Scottish Government by £1.1 billion in our day-to-day funding compared with UK Government departments.

“This comes on top of reductions in our funding worth hundreds of millions of pounds as a result of the UK Government’s proposed welfare reforms and failure to fully fund its employer National Insurance increase.

“In this context, it is important that we take action to maximise funding targeted at frontline services such as our NHS.” 

The Medium Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) will outline the approach to ensuring Scotland’s finances remain on a sustainable footing.

It will be accompanied by a Fiscal Sustainability Delivery Plan, setting out the actions being taken in support of the MTFS.

Both documents will be presented by the Finance Secretary in a statement to Parliament on Wednesday 25 June.

What to do if you hit an animal on the road when driving this summer

Drivers are being told what to do if they accidentally collide with animals when driving around the UK this summer. 

With 14,649 animals reportedly killed on UK roads each year*, the motoring experts from LeaseLoco.com are offering advice to help keep both drivers and animals safe on the roads. 

Those driving in rural areas or late at night should be extra mindful that they might come across wildlife.

Motorists are advised to reduce their speed and remain alert, particularly on country roads with 60mph limits, where animal collisions are more common.**

The experts warn that drivers who do come across animals should slow down and avoid any sudden or loud movements such as swerving, braking suddenly, using the horn or revving the engine.

This can frighten the animal and cause them to panic and act unpredictably, which could put both you and the animal in danger. 

Remain calm and wait for the animal to pass and clear the road before gently driving off. 

In the event of a collision, the correct course of action depends on the animal involved. 

For dogs, cattle, horses, pigs, goats, sheep, donkeys and mules, drivers are legally required to report the incident to the police.

Failure to do so may result in penalty points, fines, or even imprisonment under section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Hitting an animal can be distressing, but it’s important to remain calm. Pull over when it is safe to do so, switch on hazard lights, and check that all passengers are unharmed.

If safe to do so, motorists are also advised to take photographs of the scene and the animal to support any necessary reports or insurance claims.

Although it is not a legal requirement to report collisions involving other animals such as cats, foxes, deer or badgers, contacting the RSPCA or a local wildlife rescue centre may help save the animal’s life.

It’s also recommended to report larger animals like deer to the police or local council so that they can be easily removed, as they can obstruct the road and pose a hazard.

If a domestic animal is involved, check for a collar, as this may help identify the owner.

Notifying the owner can provide closure and prevent unnecessary distress from not knowing what happened to their pet.

“If you’re travelling in rural areas this summer, be prepared and always look well ahead for animals and slow down when approaching one. 

“Swerving to avoid them can lead to more serious accidents, so it’s safer to brake in a controlled way and gently come to a full stop if you need to and wait for the animal to pass.

“Sudden movements and loud noises from the car can frighten and startle animals which can be really dangerous for everyone so avoid revving the engine and beeping the horn at all costs. 

“If you spot animals like cattle or deer, wait a few minutes to ensure that the rest of their herd isn’t about to appear behind them and drive cautiously.

“If you have hit an animal, it’s really important that you report the incident to the council, police, or the RSPCA. You could potentially save the animal’s life and help keep other road users safe.”

Outdoor experts name Wardie and Portobello beaches among the UK’s paddleboarding hotspots

TWO EDINBURGH BEACHES IN PADDLEBOARDING TOP TEN

Boscombe Pier has been named the best place in the UK for paddleboarding with a score of 9.73. Located in Bournemouth, the beach has an excellent water classification making it an ideal spot for paddleboarders.

With almost 1,700 hours of sunshine each year and an average wind speed of 8.63 m/s per 10m, the conditions are well-suited for getting out on the water.

Lessons and equipment are available at local rentals such as Sorted Surf School and there are several cafes and restaurants along the pier which are perfect for refuelling after a paddleboarding session.

Edinburgh’s WARDIE BAY comes in a fine fourth and Portobello also features in the UK top ten, featuring eight on the list.
