All A-board! New bus service to Lost Shore and Climbing Arena

Service 67 launches after years of campaigning for better public transport to Edinburgh’s adventure sports hub

A new direct bus service connecting Edinburgh city centre with Lost Shore Surf Resort, Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA) and the village of Ratho has launched, following years of campaigning for improved public transport links to the area.

Service 67 is initially operating hourly, Monday to Friday, creating a direct public transport connection between central Edinburgh and two of Scotland’s leading adventure sports destinations. The service is expected to expand to seven days a week in the coming weeks.

Operated by HcL, Service 67 will connect central Edinburgh with Lost Shore Surf Resort and EICA Ratho, with stops including Haymarket Station, Hermiston Gate Park & Ride and Ratho Village.

The launch is a major milestone following several years of work to restore a direct public transport connection between Ratho and Edinburgh, including sustained campaigning by the Ratho Bus Working Group and support from Lost Shore and EICA for better transport links to the area.

Research carried out as part of the campaign demonstrated strong demand for improved public transport. More than 2,200 people responded to a community survey, with 90% saying they would use public transport if services to the area were improved.

The new route will make it significantly easier for Edinburgh residents and visitors without access to a car to reach Ratho and its growing adventure sports hub, bringing surfing and climbing within a direct bus journey of the city centre.

“We’ve believed from the beginning that world-class adventure should be accessible to as many people as possible. Lost Shore and EICA offer two incredible experiences right next door to each other, but getting here without a car has been a real barrier for too many people.

“Service 67 has the potential to change that. For the first time, people will have a simple, direct connection from the city centre to come surfing at Lost Shore, climbing at EICA, or spend a day experiencing both.

“This has taken a huge collective effort, particularly from the Ratho Bus Working Group, who have campaigned tirelessly for better connections. Now the most important thing we can do is get behind the service and use it.”

Stacey O’Flaherty, Ratho Bus Working Group, added: “This is about much more than introducing another bus route. EICA and Lost Shore are two incredible destinations sitting side by side in Ratho, yet getting here without a car has remained difficult, while our community has been without a direct connection to Edinburgh city centre since 2014.

“More than 2,200 people took part in our research and 90% told us they would use public transport if a suitable service was available. The 67 responds to that demand, connecting EICA, Lost Shore and Ratho village directly with Hermiston Park & Ride, Haymarket and the city centre.

“This is a huge step forward for the community and for making this part of Edinburgh easier to reach. Now we need people to use it and help us demonstrate over the next six months just how valuable this connection can be.”

Service 67 will initially operate as a six-month trial, with passenger use and feedback helping to inform decisions about the future of the service.

The service currently runs hourly, Monday to Friday, using accessible 16-seat minibuses, with plans to expand to seven days a week in the coming weeks. An adult single journey costs £2.40, with cash and card payments accepted. Under-22 and eligible concessionary National Entitlement Cards are also accepted. 

The route will make it significantly easier for people across Edinburgh to reach Lost Shore and EICA by public transport, opening up access to two major adventure destinations without the need for a car.

It also creates a stronger connection between Lost Shore and neighbouring EICA, bringing surfing and climbing together as part of a distinctive active day out at Edinburgh’s adventure hub.

Red Bull Sessions brings big-wave surfers Ben Larg and Andrew Cotton to Lost Shore

Before the Atlantic wakes up and attention turns once again to the giant winter swells of Nazaré, Scottish big-wave surfer Ben Larg and British big-wave pioneer Andrew “Cotty” Cotton enjoyed some very different waves on Saturday at Red Bull Sessions at Lost Shore Surf Resort.

The big-wave teammates, who finished third together at the 2025 Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, were reunited in Scotland for Red Bull Sessions, giving participants the chance to share the line-up with Larg and Cotton. 

Across six 30-minute surf sessions, surfers shared Lost Shore’s waves with the pros, picking up advice, watching different approaches to the same sections and pushing their own surfing.

Larg, who is an ambassador for Lost Shore, grew up surfing on the Isle of Tiree before progressing to some of the biggest waves in the world. The event offered the chance to surf at home in Scotland and give something back to the community before the European big-wave season begins again.

Ben Larg said: “It was such a good atmosphere. Cotty and I are normally together when there are some pretty serious waves around, so it was nice to have a session where the focus was just on having fun, sharing waves and helping people push their surfing.

“When the Atlantic really gets going everything becomes a lot more serious for us, so this was a great way to get in the water together before that starts. To be able to do it here in Scotland and see everyone feeding off each other made it even better. There’s so much passion for surfing in Scotland. Hopefully nights like this get more people excited about surfing and show what’s possible.”

In February 2025, Larg received a late call-up to make his Nazaré Big Wave Challenge debut alongside Cotton, one of the UK’s most experienced big-wave surfers and a long-time mentor to the young Scot.

Larg announced himself on the international big-wave stage with a third-place finish in the men’s individual standings, while he and Cotton also secured third place in the team competition. The pair have continued to surf and train together, with Larg spending much of the winter chasing Atlantic swells and developing his big-wave surfing. At Lost Shore, however, the emphasis was firmly on fun and progression.

Andrew “Cotty” Cotton said: “There’s always that point towards the end of summer when you start thinking about what the Atlantic is going to do and what the season ahead might bring. Before all of that kicks off, this was just a really fun way to get in the water with Ben and lots of other surfers.

“What I love about Lost Shore is the amount of surfing you can get done. You know the waves are coming, so you can try something, make an adjustment and go again. For anyone who wants to progress, that repetition is so valuable.

“Ben and I have shared some pretty intense experiences in the water. He’s still incredibly young and has so much ahead of him. I’m looking forward to seeing what he does when the big-wave season gets going again.”

Away from the surf sessions, the event also featured breathwork, mindfulness and mobility, before an expression session gave surfers the chance to turn up the performance and put what they had learned into practice. The evening finished with a BBQ and afterparty, bringing the surf community together out of the water as well as in it.

Red Bull Sessions is the latest event to bring some of the biggest names in surfing to Lost Shore since the inland surf destination opened outside Edinburgh in 2024.

Children Invited to Try Surfing for Free This Summer

Scottish Surfing and Lost Shore are investing in the future of the sport

With Scotland preparing to welcome the Commonwealth Games this summer, Scottish Surfing and Lost Shore are encouraging children to discover a sport that could inspire the country’s next generation of athletes. 

Children across Scotland are being invited to catch their very first wave this summer, with Scottish Surfing offering free beginner surf lessons at Lost Shore Surf Resort as part of SportScotland’s ‘Summer of Sport’ campaign.

Research increasingly highlights surfing’s positive impact on physical fitness, confidence, resilience and mental wellbeing, making it an ideal activity for young people during the school holidays. 

The free sessions are taking place on Sunday 26th July and Sunday 2nd August from 10.30am, at Europe’s largest inland surf destination Lost Shore Surf Resort, located just outside Edinburgh.

Open to primary and secondary school children aged seven and over, the sessions give young people the opportunity to experience surfing in a safe, fun and supportive environment completely free of charge.

Delivered through Scottish Surfing’s Catch the Wave programme, the initiative is designed to widen participation in surfing, introduce young people to the sport at an early age and help build Scotland’s future surfing community .

Participants will receive expert coaching from qualified instructors, all surfing equipment and wetsuits, followed by lunch to refuel after their time in the wave pool.

SportScotland’s Summer of Sport is a nationwide initiative designed to encourage children and young people to get active, try new sports and enjoy positive experiences during the school holidays.

We know that trying something new can be life-changing, helping build confidence, resilience and a lifelong love of being active.

Championing Women In The Water At Lost Shore

Celebrate International Women’s Day with all women’s surf sessions and film screenings

This International Women’s Day, Scotland’s pioneering inland surf destination Lost Shore Surf Resort,  is championing women in and out of the water with all-women surf lessons and sessions as well as two film screenings. 

First up on Friday 6th March, Lost Shore is hosting a mini-film premiere and Q&A; ‘In Conversation with Amy Swims’. The evening starts with the premiere of Loch Ness Swim Challenge documentary film, before a Q&A session with the world record ultramarathon swimmer herself, Amy Ennion aka Amy Swims. 

Tickets cost £15 with all profits going to Lost Shore’s affiliated charities; The Wave Project and Inclusive Surfing Scotland, that deliver surf therapy sessions for young people and adaptive surf sessions at Lost Shore, improving lives through surfing.

Then on Sunday 8th March, Lost Shore, recently named the world’s best surf park, is running dedicated all-women lessons for beginners and improvers, plus sessions on the Cruiser and Turns settings. Europe’s largest inland surf resort, Lost Shore, has unveiled its 2025 festive line-up, complete with a special visit from Mrs Claus, the return of the resort’s much-loved festive cinema, and glittering Christmas party nights perfect for groups of all sizes.

Free Surf Lessons for Kids at Europe’s Largest Inland Surf Resort

Scotland’s most exciting new holiday destination is making waves for families this summer – with free surf lessons and sessions for kids throughout July.

Scotland’s first inland surf resort, Lost Shore Surf Resort, officially opened with an exciting ribbon-cutting ceremony at its £60m site in Ratho, near Edinburgh, marking a new era for the nation’s adventure tourism.

Lost Shore Surf Resort spotlights the best of Scotland’s independent food scene

 Lost Shore, Scotland’s first inland surf resort, has announced the arrival of three celebrated Scottish restaurants in its highly anticipated waterfront bar, cafe, and restaurant offering, Canteen.

Glasgow-based Five March and Rafa’s Diner are set to join the resort, along with the iconic Edinburgh pizzeria, Civerinos.

The eateries will be the first to take up residence in the resort’s waterfront dining experience, Canteen, designed and managed by renowned Edinburgh-based events and hospitality agency, Rogue Village.

Originating from Glasgow, Five March is renowned for its effortlessly cool vibe and inventive small plates.

This will be Five March’s third venture, following the success of their collaborative pop-up in Glasgow’s Southside, Five at Phillies, and the original Park Circus location. Owner Joanna Nethery has curated a menu rich in locally and ethically sourced ingredients, with a strong emphasis on vegetarian and vegan options, while also celebrating the incredible Scottish meat and fish offerings.

At Lost Shore, diners can expect a creative array of dishes that are as delicious as they are sustainable, making Five March a must-visit for food enthusiasts.

Civerinos 

A staple of Edinburgh’s vibrant culinary scene, Civerinos is set to open its sixth location at Canteen.

Inspired by the atmosphere of classic New York Slice joints, Civerinos offers a laid-back yet dynamic dining experience, with an array of mouth-watering pizzas and Italian street food on offer.

Civerinos promises an inviting and energetic dining experience perfect for surfers and families alike.  

Rafa’s Diner 

From its humble beginnings in Glasgow’s Hidden Lane, Rafa’s Diner has quickly become a beloved spot for its down-to-earth charm and fantastic food.

Known for its no-fuss, flavour-packed menu, Rafa’s will bring its celebrated Mexican dishes to Lost Shore, offering a taste of comfort and authenticity. The diner’s Finnieston location has garnered a loyal following, and visitors to Lost Shore can look forward to the same delicious experience with a menu designed to delight.

Locality is a keen focus of Canteen’s offering. In addition to the rotating food offering, Canteen is working with speciality coffee roaster Machina Coffee, and the award-winning Company Bakery, both based in Edinburgh, to provide visitors with first-class hot drinks and pastries. Leith-based brewery, Pilot, is providing the resort with its house beer.
