Two charged as part of investigation to tackle Bonfire Night disorder

Two men have been charged as part of an ongoing investigation to tackle disorder ahead of this year’s Bonfire Night period.

On Wednesday, 15 October, 2025, officers in West Lothian recovered 200kg of fireworks from a storage unit in East Calder.

As part of enquiries, intelligence-led searches were then carried out at properties in West Granton Road, West Pilton Lea, West Pilton Street, West Pilton Place and Bughtlin Place.

Two men, aged 18 and 25, were arrested and charged. The 18-year-old was due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday, 24 October and the 25-year-old is scheduled to appear today, Monday, 27 October.

Detective Inspector Steven Dick from Edinburgh Division CID said: “Our enquiries suggest the large quantity of fireworks seized was intended to be used for disorder and violence over the coming weeks.

“We know the significant impact the criminal use of fireworks has had on communities, vital services and emergency workers during the last few years, and this will not be tolerated.

“Officers will continue to gather intelligence and carry out enforcement and disruption action to prevent firework-related offences and bring to justice those who intend to cause fear and injury during the Bonfire Night period.”

Serious assault on West Granton Road: Do you know these men?

Police Scotland have released images of two men who may be able to assist an enquiry into a serious assault which took place on West Granton Road, at around 10.15pm on Saturday, 23 August, 2025.

The first man, pictured below, is described as white, aged 35 to 45-years-old with dark hair and beard. He was wearing a black Under Armour T-shirt and Adidas jogging bottoms.

The second man, pictured below, is described as white, aged 18 to 25 years-old, wearing glasses, a black hooded top with an Adidas Original logo and black jogging bottoms.

Detective Constable William Doughty, of Corstorphine CID said: “I would encourage these men or anyone who may recognises them to get in touch.”

Anyone who can assist is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 3999 of 23 August 2025. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.

Appeal to trace witnesses after man seriously assaulted in Granton

Police are appealing for information following the serious assault of a 70-year-old man, which took place in West Granton Road.

The incident was reported to police on the evening last night (Wednesday, 24 April), having taken place around 4.10pm that afternoon.

The victim exited his black Renault Scenic and was attacked by a member of a group of six men.

Members of the public came to his assistance and he was driven to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment, after which police were contacted.

Detective Sergeant John Dunn said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, or may have been in the area on the afternoon of Wednesday, 24 April, to come forward.

“We are particularly keen to trace the man who drove the victim to the hospital, as he may be able to assist our enquiries. He is described as an Irish man, who went by the name ‘Paul’. If you are this man, or believe you know him, please get in touch.

West Granton Road attempted robbery: man to appear in court

A man has been arrested and charged following an attempted robbery at a convenience store on West Granton Road.

The incident happened around 7.45am yesterday (Sunday, 10 October). The 31-year-old man is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court tomorrow (Tuesday 12 October).

Detective Inspector Kevin Tait said: “Fortunately no one was hurt and there was no threat to the wider public. I would like to thank the public for their patience.”

Missing man: body found in West Granton quarry

Around 11am yesterday (Monday, 4 January), police recovered the body of a man from water at a quarry near West Granton Road.

Although formal identification is still to take place, officers believe it to be Lukasz Machalski (above) who had been missing from his home in Restalrig since Sunday, 13 December, 2020 and his family has been informed.

Enquiries are ongoing and a full report will be forwarded to the Procurator Fiscal.

Police appeal following Royston hit and run

A ten year old boy suffered a broken arm after a hit-and-run incident in North Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon. The boy was struck at about 2pm on West Granton Road near its junction with Royston Mains Street.

The driver of the car involved, which may have been a white BMW, failed to stop and pPolice have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

 

Witnesses sought to West Granton assault

Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after a disabled woman was assaulted and robbed in West Granton Road yesterday.

The 52-year-old, who suffers from Huntingdon’s Disease, was walking southwards along West Granton Road towards the Morrison store between 10.30am and 11.20am on Thursday when someone approached her from behind.

The suspect grabbed hold of the woman’s handbag strap and pulled on it violently, causing her to fall to the ground before making off  with the bag, which contained cash and other personal possessions, towards Pennywell Road.

Two passers-by then came to the victim’s aid and she was taken to the ERI where she is currently being treated for a dislocated shoulder.

Detectives are now keen to speak with anyone who was in the area yesterday morning and remembers seeing anything suspicious.

The suspect is described as white, around 5ft tall with a skinny build, wearing a dark hooded top with the hood worn up concealing their face and dark trousers.

A police spokesman said: “This was a sickening and opportunistic assault and robbery on a clearly vulnerable woman and we are carrying out enquiries in the local area to identify the person responsible. As the victim did not get a good look at the suspect we are unable to say at this time if they were male or female and would urge anyone who witnessed this incident to come forward and assist with our enquiries. We believe a number of cars may have been driving past during the time of the attack and these motorists are asked to contact police immediately.”
