Restaurants, bars, and pubs across the country are being forced to close their doors after being plunged into tier three and four restrictions following the government’s latest announcement. 

Enterprising hospitality businesses up and down the country are boxing up their offerings and shipping them directly to your door, offering a lifeline through takeaways and home deliveries.  

As part of their Christmas Hampers Index report, the consumer spending experts at money.co.uk have compiled a list of independent businesses across the nation who have had to think outside (and inside) the box.

The Gannet opened in Glasgow’s Finnieston neighbourhood in September 2013, by three friends Ivan Stein, Peter Read and Peter McKenna, and Kevin Dow joined them in 2014.

The Gannet’s menu remains dominated by exceptional Scottish produce. If anything, the kitchen seems to have stepped things up a notch this year despite the challenges that has faced the hospitality industry as a whole.

Five March

Being placed into tier 3 restrictions meant Five March had to think of alternative ways to offer their menu to their guests. The Malaysian restaurant introduced a dine at home menu, starting at £50 for two. But it doesn’t stop there, they have also introduced a Christmas box filled with festive foods, ready for collection on Christmas Eve, costing £100 for two.

Ae fond farewell: The Royal McGregor

It is with a heavy heart that we need to inform our dear customers that the Royal McGregor will not be re-opened by the McGregor family who have operated the site for the past 20 years.

With only 18 months left on our current lease the COVID-19 pandemic could not have come at a worse time. Despite our best efforts our landlord would not agree to a lease extension which would have made continuing to trade a viable option.

We have shared so many wonderful memories with our loyal customers, family and amazing staff and will miss you all dearly. Thank you for being part of our success story, we will forever be grateful.

Fabio’s up for sale

Specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co, has brought to the market Fabio’s, a very successful family owned Italian restaurant that has been trading since 1998.

The restaurant has long been recognised for its great menu, relaxed surroundings and unpretentious attitude.

The restaurant is situated in the residential area of Corstorphine on Glasgow Road, one of the main thoroughfares into Edinburgh City Centre and only three miles away from Edinburgh airport which attracts millions of tourists each year. Fabio’s is a staple of the local community and is popular with residents and visitors alike.

Stylish waterfront brasserie to reel-in foodies

AN AMBITIOUS new venture is set to breathe life into a prominent historic site overlooking Newhaven Pier – at a location fast becoming one of Edinburgh’s foodie destinations.

Due to open in mid-February, Pier Brasserie will bring a warm, contemporary bar and brasserie into the former Prezzo, within the renowned old fishmarket building in Newhaven, overlooking the famous Newhaven Lighthouse and with views across the three famous Forth bridges.

It is the vision of Mark Patonyi, one of the city’s most-esteemed restaurant managers, with 13 years’ experience that includes helping launch and manage the front of house at Martin Wishart’s The Honours – and just under five years as manager of Steak Restaurant at Picardy Place.

Along with 15 staff, Steak’s former executive chef, Vladimir Garcik will head up the new kitchen, which will create seasonal, inclusive menus utilising top supplier relationships with the likes of Donald Russell butchers – and neighbours Welch’s fishmongers.

Mark, 36, has been at the heart of the £100,000+ transformation of the site, project managing each process to ensure they meet his exceptionally high standards – as well as hand-picking a 15-strong team.

He said: “We’re bringing something entirely bold and new to this striking location. It’s been a labour of love, but this is a prospect that truly excites me – and I want Pier Brasserie to quickly become a local gem that also encourages more people down to this beautiful part of the city.

“Everything we’re doing is about honesty and inclusivity, with a bar suitable for lovers of fine beers wines, a date-night drink, as well as being a spot that families can feel entirely at ease.

“It’s important to me that our food will be good value, high quality and gimmick-free – so that we can become a welcoming spot for all, from vegans and vegetarians, to seafood lovers and steak aficionados.

“We’re fortunate to have some amazing foodie neighbours around us too, who have also been charmed by this quirky old fishmarket building – as well as a view that is hard to beat!”

Mark is inspired by the famous Newhaven fishwives that thronged the Pier Place building, which dates back to 1896. Famed for their sharp-tongues and quick wits, they established a strong, vibrant community.

He added: “We’re proud to use the finest Scottish ingredients which have been farmed, caught, raised or bred in Scotland and we’re passionate about supporting businesses in our local area and the community on a whole.”

The new spot will fit in excess of 70 covers and has a separate bar area with the design focused around natural tones and exposed materials, creating a warm shelter from which to admire the expansive Forth.

In the summer, it will be able to utilise the outside decking, creating a cosmopolitan experience for diners and drinkers.

A private dining area will also enable Pier Brasserie to take larger bookings for special occasions and corporate dinners.

Pancho Villa’s restaurant in Old Town sold

Mexican themed restaurant, Pancho Villa’s, has been sold through specialist business property adviser, Christie & Co to an experienced local operator.

The previous owners had run the authentic Mexican restaurant in the Canongate for over 30 years, building up an excellent reputation for providing high quality food and drink with a lively atmosphere. They decided to sell the lease for the popular restaurant in order to retire.

New owner Ruori Stewart, who also owns The Apartment restaurant at Barclay Place, purchased the new lease and plans to trade the restaurant as the apartment pop-up until the property undergoes refurbishment to prepare for a new and unique concept.

Tony Spence, Business Agent at Christie & Co’s Edinburgh office who handled the sale, said: “Pancho Villa’s generated a good amount of interest from the outset and an experienced tenant was secured after a quick closing date was set.

“The market remains interesting with commercial properties continuing to attract interest from investors, experienced multiple operators and first-time buyers.”

Pancho Villa’s sold for over the asking price of £100,000 for the leasehold going concern.

 

Four Edinburgh restaurants in UK’s Top 100

Four Edinburgh restaurants – two of which are based in Leith – feature prominently in The Sunday Times guide to the Top 100 places to eat in the UK. The influential restaurant guide, which will be published on Sunday, is judged by a panel which icludes top chefs Jamie Oliver, Antonio Carluccio and Nick Jones.

The four Edinburgh restaurants – half of only eight Scottish eateries to feature – to make it into the elite list are Norn, The Gardener’s Cottage, Ondine and Tom Kitchin’s multi-award winning Michelin-starred The Kitchin at Leith’s Commercial Quay.

Norn, on Leith’s Henderson Street (above), is described as a restaurant ‘in the finest tradition of Scottish cooking’, while Ondine on George IV Bridge (below)  earns praised as a ‘first-class fish restaurant with the friendliest Scottish service’.

Top Scottish authors on hand as Des McDonald opens his first Edinburgh edition

A new chapter opened on George Street yesterday when some of Scotland’s literary greats were the first guests at the official opening of the The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen. 

To mark the opening of the new restaurant, respected restaurateur Des McDonald was joined by head chef Colin Fleming to serve some of Scotland’s literary elite, including leading Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin, Chris Brookmyre, Sue Lawrence, Doug Johnstone, Jenni Fagan and Lin Anderson.

Des, who has over 20 years’ experience running some of London’s most high-profile restaurants, has shaped every aspect of The Printing Press – including the concept design and menu – in what is his maiden venture in Scotland.

Housed in a Georgian townhouse on George Street, The Printing Press pays homage to the capital’s rich literary heritage: number 25 was home in the 1780s to the acclaimed novelist Susan Ferrier and in late 1840 records show one John Oliphant living there – Oliphant’s and Ferrier’s descendants founded Oliphant, Anderson and Ferrier, one of Scotland’s most prestigious publishing houses, best known for the series of Famous Scots books.

Now, a multi-million pound refurbishment has created an elegant, all-day, 180-seat restaurant and bar that restores many of the building’s original Georgian features alongside contemporary touches to create a series of rooms that are elegant and comfortable from morning though to the wee hours.

“We set out with a clear vision to create a warm, distinctive restaurant and bar in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town that nods to the heritage of the building and the city itself,” says Des. “We’ve worked with some of the most reputable suppliers in Scotland, as well as talented designers and contractors to bring this new restaurant experience to Edinburgh’s dining scene.

The Printing Press is looking for staff

Edinburgh’s vibrant culinary scene will soon be joined by the opening of The Printing Press, an elegant, all-day restaurant that will champion seasonal Scottish produce.

The restaurant is due to open this autumn on the site of the former EH2 Tempus, with a new small coffee house called Burr & Co. next door.

Altogether, a team of 70 new staff will be needed – from waiters, bartenders and baristas to hosts, supervisors, managers, sous chefs and chefs de partie.

Stephen Begg, restaurant manager, said: “The Printing Press is set to offer Edinburgh a relaxed, warm and friendly drinking and dining destination where guests feel right at home. For that reason, we need a great team of people, with bags of personality, who are passionate about food and customer service.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to get in at the start of an exciting new restaurant launch and to be a part of all the activity that accompanies it. Our aim is to deliver great style at every level, from the food and drink to the interiors and the service. We hope The Printing Press will become a destination that people want to come back to, time and time again, not only for the great food but also for the talented and friendly staff who work there.”

Successful candidates will receive an intensive training course to learn about every element of the business, and a 19-day programme has been specially created for that purpose.

Both The Printing Press and Burr & Co. will open in the autumn.

A chef recruitment open day will take place on Monday, 24 August and the front of house recruitment open day will take place on Tuesday, 25 August 2015.
