The good people of the British Red Cross are coming to Prentice on Saturday to deliver some Free First Aid. It starts at 10am until approx 1040am.
The session is for dads. If you know someone who would like to book a slot let us know asap! Dads can either just come themselves, or if they want their wee one can come to the playgroup with mum.

Hopes had been raised that a solution could be found following a public meeting last month, but the centre received the news they had been dreading on Friday. North West Carers are moving home next week. The local organisation won’t be moving too far, however – the Carers are ‘flitting’ from Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre down to the Prentice Centre in Granton Mains.
Manager Angela Dias said: “We are moving to new premises on Wednesday (18 March). Our new address is: The Prentice Centre, 1 Granton Mains Avenue,
EH4 4GA. Our email addresses and website address will remain the same as now, as will our telephone number.
“We would expect communications to be working as normal, however please bear with us if there are complications with our telephone and email systems within the first few days. We will put a mobile number on our website on Wednesday which will provide a default communication system in the unlikely case of any unforeseen difficulties.”

A unique playgroup for dads and their kids will ‘keep on rocking’ in North Edinburgh thanks to support from the Weir Charitable Trust. The funding will enable Dads Rock, the multi-award network of free playgroups for dads and kids, to continue to run their Prentice Centre playgroup.
The playgroup. which started in October 2012 and runs every Saturday, is open to all dads/male carers and their children; and is the only preschool playgroup specifically for dads in North Edinburgh.
Dads and male carers can often be excluded or marginalised from other early years settings. Dads Rock was set up by dads, for dads, with the aim of being a fun, positive and rocking place for dads and children to come.
The playgroup gives dads and their children invaluable one to one time, there is free play, including instruments, a healthy snack, story and song time. There is a regular attendance of between 15-25 dads and kids.
The funding will also contribute to a trip later on this year for the dads and children.
Thomas Lynch, co-founder of Dads Rock, said: ‘It’s amazing to have the backing of the Weir Charitable Trust – without this funding the group would have had to stop, so this allows us to continue to be there for dads, kids and to rock out each week!’
There will be at least two local opportunities to celebrate the birth of the Bard next Friday (25th January).
The Prentice Centre in Granton Mains is the venue for an afternoon debate and discussion on Scotland’s future (something Burns himself cared passionately about) while in the evening at North Edinburgh Arts the Transition Group’s latest World Cafe event will have a definite tartan flavour with a menu packed with Scottish favourites.

Organisations and individuals working with young people in North and West Edinburgh got the chance to find out more about befriending at CHILDREN 1st’s Open Day at bfriends Prentice Centre base last Friday.
bfriends volunteers provide friendship and support for children and young people who are experiencing difficulties at home, at school or in the community. The aim is to help build young people’s self-confidence and self-esteem, and to open up opportunities for personal and social development.
Project development worker Paul Burke (pictured below, with volunteer Charlene Paul) said: “CHILDREN 1ST reopened its bfriends base in North Edinburgh recently and we are keen to raise our profile with local agencies and let people know more about the service, volunteers and the young people we work with. Young people need to have someone they can count on when they are having a hard time but sometimes there is no one for them to talk to – our volunteer befrienders are trained and supported to work with children and young people who are experiencing difficulties in their lives or whose support networks have been eroded because of changes in their family.”
“Volunteers are matched on a one-to-one basis with children and young people Together, they can try out new experiences designed to broaden the young person’s horizons. As they get to know each other and develop a good relationship, the child or young person can have fun and have a break from their everyday lives.”
Referrals are accepted from children and young people aged five to 14, who experience difficulties at home, at school, or in the community, including those living in designated areas of disadvantage, from black and ethnic minorities and children referred through pupil support groups.
