Our Positive Action recruitment team will talk about the recruitment process, the entrance test and fitness test, as well as the assessment day. A serving female police officer will be there to discuss their experience of the recruitment process and their experiences of the role so far.
You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and meet potential candidates who are also thinking of applying to become a police officer.
We are committed to increasing the number of officers and staff from under-represented groups. There are well documented barriers to some people applying to join the police service.
We therefore run a number of different recruitment events to answer specific questions from people from diverse communities. This is to make sure everyone has fair access to the Police Scotland recruitment process.
These events are for groups currently under-represented in Police Scotland. The consent, support and cooperation of our fellow citizens lies at the heart of the identity and legitimacy of policing in Scotland.
To ensure that bond is as strong as possible, we must fully represent and reflect the communities we serve. Inclusion is an operational necessity and morally the right thing to do.
Police Scotland are hosting a recruitment event aimed at people from minority ethnic communities with the opportunity to hear from serving BME officers.
The next steps will be taken toward introducing new Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) to help alleviate parking pressures around Edinburgh, if approved by councillors this week.
On Thursday (28 January), Transport and Environment Committee will consider the results of an informal consultation on proposals for new controls in Leith, Gorgie and Shandon, as well as details on the operation of measures. Designs for parking controls have been amended following consultation and, if approved, we’ll commence the legal processes for introducing them.
This is the first of four phases of implementation of parking controls around the city, developed as part of the Strategic Parking Review, which was originally approved in 2018. The review has taken a holistic approach to parking pressures across Edinburgh, assessing the city on a street by street basis.
This has led to the identification of areas where parking controls may be required to resolve challenges facing residents, in particular from non-residential parking.
The report also updates on timescales for phase two (Roseburn, Corstorphine, Willowbrae and Saughton), phase three (Southside and Fettes) and phase four (Newhaven, Trinity, South Morningside, Portobello, Stenhouse and Saughton), which have been impacted by COVID-19.
Transport Convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes said: “This review responds to the concerns of residents across the city, many of whom have told us that they want to see controls introduced to help limit the impact of non-residential parking.
Thanks to an in-depth, citywide analysis we have been able to identify the areas most in need of restrictions. Of course, the way we travel has changed immeasurably over the last year, but the introduction of new CPZs will be extremely beneficial to managing parking pressures when we eventually return to some sense of normality.
Not only do these controls help residents to park near their homes, but they can encourage those travelling into and around the city to consider alternative, sustainable modes of transport.”
The city council began the Strategic Parking Review in 2018 in response to comments from residents, community councils and ward councillors across the city, which demonstrated increasing support for new parking controls to limit non-residential parking.
An in-depth review split the city into five areas, further subdivided into 124 investigation areas, helping to generate heat maps for each location showing relative parking pressures by street. As a result, a series of new parking controls were approved in 2019, to be implemented in four phases.
On Thursday, committee members will also be asked to agree proposals to commence the legal process for introducing limited parking controls in Sighthill Industrial Estate to help manage parking demand there, as well as restrictions on the availability of permits for new or redeveloped properties.
The report details an approach to consultation for future phases in light of COVID restrictions, with virtual drop-in sessions, detailed plans online and opportunities to feed back on proposals via websites, interactive plans and questionnaires.
Consultation on phase two of the Strategic Parking Review is expected to begin in February.
It was smiles all round at Police Scotland’s Fettes HQ earlier today when The Sick Kids Friends Foundation was presented with a cheque for £1175. The sum was raised at an ice hockey match held last month between teams from Police Scotland and UK Firefighters in aid of the Edinburgh charity.
It was a clash to remember for the players of Police Scotland who eventually triumphed at Murrayfield Ice Rink with a hard-fought 8-3 victory.
Detective Sergeant Martin McKay helped organise the event and was delighted with the final total raised. He explained: “Both teams are delighted with the amount of money raised for such a worthy cause and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came down and showed their support.
“But of course, talking from the viewpoint as a proud member of the Police Scotland team, I have to say that I was also delighted with the final score!”
Victoria Watson of the Sick Kids Friends Foundation added: “It has been absolutely fantastic to work with Police Scotland and the UK Firefighters. This was a successful event and all the money raised will go towards helping sick children and their families across Scotland.”
Also attending the cheque presentation were Riley Emmerson and Kyle Flemington of the Edinburgh Capitals – and charity mascot PJ Bear.
Westwoods Health Club at Fettes has been crowned the Best Premium Health Club in Scotland in the prestigious Health Club of the Year Awards UK. What makes the accolade even more special is that the competition judges were the club’s own members!
David Gibson, one of Westwoods fitness Instructor/personal trainers also won one of the five National People’s Awards.
Now in its fourth year, the MEMBERS’ CHOICE Health Club Awards received 35,000 votes from members rating their club on the quality of facilities, customer service and value for money. Four hundred club entries came from a mixture of small independents, public leisure centres, hotel clubs and some of the best known brands in the industry.
Westwood’s director Wendy Wallace said: “We were keen when we opened the club 12 years ago to not only offer a fantastic health and fitness facility but to also create a friendly social club that makes a real difference to the lives of many people. We would like to thank all of our members who took the time to assess our facilities as it is because of them that we have been presented with this award.”
General manager James Matthew added: “We are so excited to have won this award. The whole team works extremely hard to deliver a high standard of service and value for money.”
Westwoods member Kirsty Rennie said: “I have been a member for many years and I am delighted that Westwoods has finally been recognized for its excellent facilities and friendly, helpful staff. I love using the club especially when I know that my kids are being so well looked after by the fantastic crèche staff.”
