Irene Garden

I am sorry to have to pass on the sad news of the death of local activist Irene Garden, who passed away last night.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Irene on many community initiatives and campaigns over the years and she was a formidable force, a strong and powerful community voice.

Her determined support of local projects, particuarly on health and older people’s issues, really made a difference. Pilton Elderly Project and Pilton Community Health Project in particular benefited from Irene’s wisdom and leadership and she was an enthusiastic participant in area-wide initiatives including the local Greater Pilton Community Alliance.

While Irene’s time was often dominated by too many meetings she enjoyed the performing arts and was an enthusiastic cast member in the memorable Oyster Wars community drama staged at North Edinburgh Arts Centre in June 2003 (above).

Further afield, Irene also made her presence felt as a community representative on citywide and national health fora, always a strong voice for socially excluded communities.

I will remember Irene – with her ever-loyal husband Al always there to give his support – with great fondness. Al sadly passed away in August after a long battle with dementia and now North Edinburgh has lost another of that generation of strong women activists who did so much to speak up for those communities whose voices are never heard.

Deepest commiserations to Sara-Louise and family – I will pass on the funeral arrangements when I have them.

Labour launch North & Leith general election campaign

Scottish Labour and Co-operative party candidate for Edinburgh North and Leith, Gordon Munro, launched his campaign at The Prentice Centre in Granton Mains Avenue yesterday.

Stand and make a difference, say West Pilton West Granton CC

All community council positions become vacant and members need to stand again for election.  I’m providing you with information on what’s involved if you are interested in standing (writes PETER FAASSEN DE HEER)
I would strongly urge you to stand and make a difference.
A strong community council is vital to help our community tackle local problems like crime, litter and bins as well as promoting all the good stuff like our parks, housing improvements, community projects and heritage.  We engage with the police, council and all the wonderful local initiatives in the area.

Our Returning Officer is Councillor Jim Campbell from Forth Ward. If you have any questions about the process or what Community Councillors do, you can email Jim at Jim.Campbell@edinburgh.gov.uk
The only requirement for someone to nominate or second is that you are on the electoral roll in the West Pilton West Granton area, and that you can only nominate/second one candidate.  You must be 16 or over.
Key Dates
  • Monday 9 September –  publication of Notice of Election (start of nomination period)
  • Monday 30 September 4pm  –  deadline for nominations (forms to Returning Officer)
  • Monday 30 September 4pm  – deadline for withdrawal of nominations
  • Thursday 10 October – publication of Notice of Poll (if a poll is required)
  • Thursday 31 October – polling day (if a poll is required)

Youth issues top the agenda at tomorrow’s community council meeting

WEST PILTON WEST GRANTON COMMUNITY COUNCIL

Please find attached an agenda for Tuesday’s Community Council meeting at the West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre, starting at 7pm.  I also attach the Minutes from the September meeting.
I’m delighted that Alan Hosie has accepted an invitation to attend to talk about youth work, especially given the concerns that exist in the community about youth crime.  Willie and I are therefore keen for all attending to hear more about the latest situation and what we positively can do together to address this.
Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.  If you cannot make it and would like to tender your apologies, please let me know by 5pm on Tuesday.

Morrisons charity football match raises £832

The weather was awful, but Sunday night’s charity football match at Spartans between the two local Morrisons stores still raised an impressive £832.76

Congratulations to the organisers and to everyone who took part to help raise funds for SAMH and CLIC SARGENT.

The match result? On an evening better suited to water polo Ferry Road beat their Granton Waterfront rivals 4 – 0!
