Craigroyston’s Josh is Local Hero!

Inspirational Young Adult award for Craigroyston pupil

HERO-2

Josh Hardwick from Muirhouse has won the Inspirational Young Adult category at this year’s Edinburgh Evening News Local Hero Awards. Josh received his award at a star-studded gala event at the Assembly Rooms last night.

Craigroyston High School, where Josh is a pupil, also came runner-up in the Schools section.

Josh’s nomination read: “Josh is an active board member of Tenants and Residents In Muirhouse, North Edinburgh Young Peoples Forum and Volunteer at Muirhouse Community Shop.

“He engages with residents from all walks all life, assisting in the community shop on a weekly basis, Josh can often be seen helping with the Food bank distribution

“He is someone who understands the issues that residents face, he is very supportive to their every need when in the shop”

“As a board member of TRIM Josh brings an invaluable young person’s take on issues that we discuss, he is passionate about his community and will do anything possible to make the area better. He engages well with any groups / agencies that attend board meetings or visit the community shop”.

Congratulations, too, to Granton’s Terri Smith, who was runner-up in the Inspirational Young Adult category. Terri suffers from health problems but hasn’t let that stop her giving young people a voice through the Scottish Youth Parliament, where she represents Edinburgh Northern & Leith.

The Inspirational Young Adult was sponsored by the Omni. Centre manager David Edwards said: “We have chosen to support that category because it is important to recognise the amazing contribution young people are making to their communities”.

And so say all of us!

On a night of successes for North Edinburgh, Professor Mike Dixon, a world-leading expert in treating breast cancer, was named Health Champion.

Based at the Western General Hospital, Mike has worked as a specialist surgeon for more than two decades and leads a research team dedicated to understanding why the most common form of breast cancer becomes resistant to drugs, which helps give sufferers the best chance of survival possible. Professor Dixon said he was delighted but his joy was tinged with sadness because his mother, who recently passed away, could not be here to share in the night.Dads Rock

Congratulations also to  David Marshall and Thomas Lynch, founders of Dads Rock. The charity supports dads to spend quality time with their children and runs local sessions at both The Prentice Centre and Royston Wardieburn Community Centre. Dads Rock won the Community Champion award (above).

Pilrig Park School was School of the Year, with Craigroyston High School runner-up, and Dean Reilly was runner up in the Fundraiser or Volunteer of the Year for his fundraising efforts on behalf of Leith-based MS Therapy Centre.

The top Local Hero award went to the late Jak Trueman. The fifteen year old from Mid Calder dedicated his last weeks to fundraising as he battled a rare form of blood cancer. He raised over £50,000 for leukaemia and lymphoma research and kick-started the fundraising for Team Jak before his untimely death in February. A worthy winner, indeed.

Power of Food Festival is fast approaching …

North Edinburgh plays a major part in this month’s Power of Food Festival with events and activities in Blackhall, Drylaw, Granton, Leith, Muirhouse and the Botanics to name just a few …! PF poster
 Hello everyone!

It’s an amazing privilege to be in a position today to launch the programme of Edinburgh’s first Power of Food Festival, only five and a half months after we decided to turn the original idea into a reality. It’s been a bit of a mad time getting everything in place, but really exhilarating to see it all coming together thanks to the efforts of a wide range of individuals keen to share their resources, skills, energy and passion. And how appropriate to be launching such an initiative on Volunteers Week! Volunteers are at the heart of community food growing and of the centre of the Festival.
We look forward to seeing you in one (or several!) of the 15 gardens of the Festival on 20-21 June and hope you enjoy the celebration!

Best wishes from

In association with Sustrans, visitors can also join in a guided bike tour of the
gardens (free but ticketed). Bookings can be made online.

Whether on foot or on two wheels, visitors can plan their Festival trip and keep up to date with the latest events and information via The Power of Food Festival website (details below).

Community Council looks to recruit new members

DrylawNC1

Drylaw Telford Community Council is urging local residents to support their neighbourhood by joining the community council. Community councillors are currently leafletting the area to encourage new people to get involved.

The leaflet drop also advertises the community council’s Annual General Meeting, which takes place next Wednesday (27 May) at 6.30pm in Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre.

Established in 1981, Drylaw Telford CC was one of Edinburgh’s original community councils. Local community councillors led the successful campaign for a purpose-built community centre for the area in the 1990s and the community council has met at Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre on the last Wednesday of the month ever  since.

Why not go along next Wednesday, meet current members and find out about how you can help make Drylaw Telford a better place to be?

Police seek Red Bridge robber

Victim ‘left shaken’ by knifepoint robbery

red bridge

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses following a knifepoint robbery near the red bridge by Crewe Toll on Tuesday.

The incident happened at around 1.30pm.

A 30-year-old man was walking on the cycle path between the red bridge on Ferry Road and the rear of the Morrisons supermarket when a male approached and presented a knife.

The victim was then threatened and robbed of his rucksack before the male made off.

Anyone who can assist police with their investigation is asked to come forward.

The suspect is described as white, early to mid-twenties, 6ft tall with an unshaven complexion and a pronounced Adam’s apple. He was wearing a navy blue hooded top with zipper and white drawstrings, navy blue trainers and scruffy white trainers.

Detective Constable Andy Cory said: “Fortunately the victim was unharmed but is obviously very upset at the theft of his rucksack and was left shaken by this incident.

“Anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity in the area is asked to contact police immediately. In addition, anyone who recognises the description of the suspect is also asked to get in touch.”

Those with information can contact Police Scotland on 101 or alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Have your say on Drylaw Telford’s green spaces

Nature in your Neighbourhood: see what’s being planned

landscapes

Drylaw Telford Community Council has initiated a consultation on the area’s green spaces.

The city council has recently signed up to Edinburgh Living Landscape, a partnership project that will ‘create, restore and connect green areas of the city to make attractive and biodiverse landscapes’ (see below).

EdinburghLivingLandscape_exec_summary2

Drylaw Telford CC chairman Alex Dale said: “As a community council we have been asked to consult residents on the open green spaces and let them know what the city council’s Parks & Greenspace team plan to do in the local area.

“In Drylaw they are proposing ‘relaxed mowing’ of some highlighted areas: this means that they will leave these areas to allow grass to grow, only mowing a perimeter border. On bigger areas, they also propose regular cuts where there is a desired path line.

“If there is community support, the project planners will to look at creating areas of wild flower meadows in the future on some of these area. To that end we will have display boards in Drylaw Neighbourhood Centre from 11th May until the 25th, and we hope local folk will come and have a look and comment on the proposals.”
