There’s a film for all tastes this Mother’s Day weekend at Vue

From sci-fi and romance to classic releases and early previews, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at Vue Edinburgh this Mother’s Day weekend – whether you’re planning a family outing, a cinema trip with mum, or simply in search of a great film.

For fans of romance, an adaptation of the best-selling book Reminders of Him will be playing over the weekend. The story follows Kenna, who after a perfect outing with her boyfriend, makes an unbearable mistake that sends her to prison. Seven years later, Kenna returns to her hometown, hoping to rebuild her life.

Sci-fi lovers can enjoy a special early preview of Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling as a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship light-years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there.

As his memory returns, he realises he must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction.

Audiences can also enjoy a very modern take on the first true sci-fi novel, with The Bride! It follows a lonely Frankenstein who travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr Euphronious to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman and The Bride is born.

For music fans, Baz Luhrmann’s EPiC: Elvis Presley blends restored concert footage from the King of Rock’s legendary 1970s Las Vegas residency with rare, never-before-seen clips and rediscovered audio of Presley recounting his own story. Also screening from Lurhmann is a re-release of The Great Gatsby led by Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio in this adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s timeless tragedy.

Also perfect for families is Angelica Huston’s unforgettable performance in the 1990 version of The Witches.

Set across dual timelines, psychological thriller Ina Pale View of Hills explores a Japanese widow’s memories spanning post-war Nagasaki in the 1950s and England during 1980s Cold War era, unravelling secrets that intertwine her past and present experiences across borders.

Bringing some levity to the weekend, How to Make a Killing follows blue-collar Becket Redfellow – disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family – who will stop at nothing to reclaim his inheritance, no matter how many relatives stand in his way.

Finally, for scream queens, the latest instalment in the long-running franchise Scream sees a new Ghostface arrive on the scene.

General Manager at Vue in Edinburgh, said: “We have a fantastic selection of films for audiences to enjoy this weekend, with something to suit every taste. Also starring Nicole Kidman, Australia will be screening from 20 April. It follows an estranged wife as she joins forces with a rugged local, played by Hugh Jackman, on a cattle drive across hundreds of miles of harsh terrain to save her ranch.

But when the pair finally reach the town of Darwin, they must contend with the same Japanese bombers that just rained death upon Pearl Harbor.

In the biopic Elvis, Luhrmann explores the life and music of Elvis Presley through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The film boasts stellar performances from Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, and is returning from 14 April.

The best of British theatre takes centre stage at Vue venues in Edinburgh this Spring

There’s lots for theatre lovers to be excited about at Vue this year, with several productions taking over the big screen in the first quarter of 2026.

Kicking things off is the Royal Ballet and Opera’s La Traviata, arriving on screens from 14 January. Audiences can enter a world of seductive grandeur, experiencing the tender and devastating beauty of Verdi’s opera, directed by Richard Eyre.

Also heading to Vue from the Royal Ballet and Opera is Woolf Works (from 9 Feb), Giselle (from 3 March) and Siegfried (from 31 March). In the former, resident choreographer Wayne McGregor leads a luminous artistic team to evoke Woolf’s signature stream of consciousness writing style in this immense work that rejects traditional narrative structures.

Meanwhile, Giselle conjures up the earthly and otherworldly realms in a tale of love, betrayal and redemption with Peter Wright’s 1985 production of the quintessential Romantic ballet – set to Adolphe Adam’s evocative score with atmospheric designs by John Macfarlane.

The latter is brought to life under Barrie Kosky’s inspired eye, following his spectacular Das Rheingold (2023) and Die Walküre (2025). Andreas Schager, in his much-anticipated debut with the productions house, stars as Siegfried’s titular hero, with Antonio Pappano conducting, drawing out the unspoken tensions and ethereal mysticism of Wagner’s dynamic score.

Fans of Shakespeare can enjoy two of the world’s greatest playwright’s productions at Vue, with Othello heading to Vue from 4 March after being filmed at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London especially for the big screen.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Tom Morris OBE (War HorseDr SemmelweisThe Grinning Man) with music by PJ Harvey, this epic story of manipulation, jealousy and toxic masculinity explores the darker side of power, rage and desire.

Meanwhile, the National Theatre’s Hamlet will be arriving from 22 January. Olivier Award-winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) takes on the titular role in this fearless, contemporary take on the famous tragedy.

Also returning from the National Theatre is Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren in The Audience (from 26 February), where she plays Queen Elizabeth II in Olivier Award–winning hit production that inspired Netflix’s The Crown.

Finally, from the Metropolitan Opera is Tristan und Isolde– arriving on screens from 24 March. The electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death.
