Police appeal following early hours robbery

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for information following an armed robbery in the city centre.

The incident happened around 2.45am yesterday (Thursday, 6 August, 2020) when a man entered the Costcutter Store on Lothian Road and threatened a member of staff with a knife. 

He then demanded money from the till drawer before leaving on foot in the direction of Princes Street with a small quantity of cash.

The suspect is described as a white man, around 5ft 8in tall and of a slim build. At the time of the incident he was wearing a black hooded top, black tracksuit bottoms, grey woollen gloves and his face was covered with black sunglasses and a red scarf.

Detective Sergeant Keith Taylor, of Edinburgh CID, said: “Thankfully nobody has been injured as a result of this incident but the member of staff has been left evidently shaken.

“Although this happened in the early hours of the morning, I would ask that if anyone noticed a man matching this description or anyone acting suspicious in the area to get in contact with police.

“I would also ask if anyone has any dashcam or CCTV footage of the surrounding area and may have information that could assist with our investigation to come forward.

“Police can be contacted on 101 quoting incident number 0400 of Thursday, 6 August, 2020. Alternatively, the charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Tollcross attack: man to appear in court

Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Tollcross. The incident happened on Panmure Place, close to the junction with Brougham Street, at around 11.50pm on Friday.

A 58-year-old man was approached by a man who was walking his dog along Panmure Place. The man struck the victim to the head with a glass bottle before pinning him to the ground, causing further serious injury to his face.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment by the Scottish Ambulance Service with serious facial injuries.

The suspect is described as white, around 5ft 8ins tall, aged between 30 and 40-years-old, and of stocky build. He was wearing a dark jacket and was walking a small brown coloured terrier-type dog.

Detective Constable Oliver Healy, of Gayfield CID, said: “There were a number of people around the area when this incident happened and we are appealing for them to get in touch if they saw what happened.

“As part of our enquiries we are reviewing CCTV footage in the area and would ask anyone with private or business systems to check their footage for the incident.

“We would also appeal to anyone who saw the suspect walking his dog prior to, or after the incident last night, or who can identify him, to come forward and contact officers as soon as possible.”

Those with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 4790 of 21st February, or make a call anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A 47 year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with this serious assault and he is due before Edinburgh Sheriff Court tomorrow – Monday, 24 February.

A full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Police appeal following Tollcross assault

Detectives in Edinburgh are appealing for information after a 49 year-old man was seriously assaulted in Edinburgh last Friday (31 January, 2020).

Around 8.45pm on Friday evening, the 49 year-old man was walking on Brougham Street, between Tollcross and Panmure Place junctions, when he was approached by a man on a bike who was cycling on the pavement.  The suspect got off his bike and assaulted the man, causing him to fall to the ground.  The cyclist then made off.

The injured man attended Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he was treated for a facial injury then later released.

The suspect is described as white, around 25-30 years of age, and of medium build.  He was wearing a light grey hooded top and jogging trousers.  He was riding a step-through bike. 

Detective Sergeant Kevin Tait of Gayfield Police Station said: “Our enquiries into this assault are continuing and officers have been carrying out enquiries in the area of Brougham Street and viewing local CCTV footage gathering more information on the man responsible.

“I would urge anyone who witnessed this attack take place on Friday evening, or who has any information that will assist our investigation to contact officers through 101 quoting reference number 1660 of 2nd February.  Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”
