Theatre in Schools Scotland will tour performances to schools across Scotland providing national spread and ensuring that TiSS at 10 reaches a range of children and young people who may have little access to the arts because of economic, social or geographical barriers.

Factors including school location, SIMD level, school size and tour logistics will be taken into account on application, rather than on a first-come first-served basis. TISS aims to offer a free live or digital performance to as many schools as possible.

TiSS will also be offering teachers recorded and in-person CLPL opportunities to accompany Birds of Paradise’s Super Special Disability Roadshow(digital). These sessions will help teachers to build understanding and confidence about disability equality.

Belinda McElhinney, Chief Executive, Imaginate said: “Theatre in Schools Scotland is key to Imaginate’s mission because every child deserves the joy and inspiration of high‑quality theatre and dance, wherever they live and whatever barriers they face.

“Touring directly into schools is the most effective and equitable way to reach children across Scotland, and we’re especially delighted to extend this to ASN schools, who remain among the most culturally underserved. For ten years, Theatre in Schools Scotland has ignited imaginations and expanded horizons, a powerful demonstration of children’s rights, creativity and well‑being in action.”

Jackie Wylie, Artistic Director and Co-CEO, National Theatre of Scotland, said: “Theatre in Schools Scotland holds a special place in NTS hearts. Our theatre without walls model demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that audiences, of all ages, in all locations across Scotland, have access to high-quality theatre.

“We are delighted, that thanks to the generosity of multiple, visionary funders, we are able to offer this free TiSS at 10 programme which we hope will extend our offer and will increase our engagement with schools Scotland-wide.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 20 years of the National Theatre of Scotland than by offering up this packed programme of brilliant, enriching theatre for children and young people to enjoy.”

Theatre in Schools Scotland was initially conceived in 2016 as a project to support and develop the touring of high-quality theatre and dance performances to Scotland’s schools and nurseries.  Since then, it has toured some of Scotland’s best productions for young audiences to schools across the country.

By the end of the school year 2025/26, Theatre in Schools Scotland is set to have reached over 114,000 pupils, in 716 individual schools, with 48 TiSS tours and 1,557 performances for children and young people.

Theatre in Schools Scotland has always offered schools subsidised performances, and the cost of a TiSS visit to schools has not increased since 2016. Offering the special TiSS at 10 anniversary programme free to schools would not be possible without a host of supporters:

TiSS at 10 is sponsored by Savendie and supported by:

The Weir Charitable Trust, Aberdeen Baker Incorporation, Aberdeen Performing Arts, Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, David and June Gordon Memorial Trust, Lyra, MEB Charitable Trust, North East Arts Touring, Russell Trust, The Tillyloss Trust, and The Touring Network.

Theatre in Schools Scotland welcomes local MP to performance at James Gillespie’s Primary School

Theatre in Schools Scotland (TiSS), National Theatre of Scotland and Imaginate’s schools touring project, was delighted to welcome Ian Murray, MP for Edinburgh South, to its final school performance of 2025, at James Gillespie’s Primary School in Edinburgh.

TiSS was at James Gillepsie’s Primary School with three performances of A Home for Hamish, by Just Us, presented by Scottish Theatre Producers.

Created and performed by Deaf Dance Artist, Clare Adam and Autistic Dance Artist, Lesley Howard (Just Us), A Home for Hamish is a colourful, immersive, interactive adventure playfully merging dance and British Sign Language and is made for younger audiences.

Across a two day visit to James Gillespie’s Primary School over 170 pupils from Nursery through to P3 enjoyed the performances in the school hall.

Following the final performance Ian Murray MP was joined by performers Clare Adam and Lesley Howard, representatives from National Theatre of Scotland, Imaginate and Scottish Theatre Producers along with pupils from the school to fly paper aeroplanes in the school hall.

Ian Murray MP for Edinburgh South said: “It was delightful to see the young people completely captivated by, and participating in, the performance.

“The performers were utterly superb. The impact of the school’s programme was encapsulated in the questions from their audience at the end.

“The interest in British Sign Language, the challenge of the story, and the “can we play more with you” were all testament to the power of the show. Well done to all involved.”

Ben Horsburgh, Head Teacher, James Gillespie’s Primary School said: “We were delighted to welcome Theatre in Schools Scotland to James Gillespie’s Primary School. A Home for Hamish was a truly memorable experience for our younger learners.

“It brought theatre right into the heart of the school and gave the children a chance to engage with themes of belonging and community in a fun, imaginative way.

“Opportunities like this enrich our curriculum and inspire our young people to see themselves as part of Scotland’s vibrant cultural story.”

Belinda McElhinney, Chief Executive, Imaginate said: It was lovely to watch the children fully absorbed into the world of Hamish. The performers beautifully integrated British Sign Language into the work and kept the children focused on their every move.

“The excited response from the children encapsulates for me the importance of bringing performance into schools as a key step to ensuring every child accesses their right to culture.

Liam Sinclair, Executive Director and Joint CEO, National Theatre of Scotland, said: “It was a delightful experience watching the inspiring A Home for Hamish at James Gillespie’s Primary School, Edinburgh and being part of such an engaged and enthused audience. We appreciated Ian Murray MP attending and sharing this occasion with us.

“TiSS is a vital project for National Theatre of Scotland, enabling children across Scotland to benefit from the joy and enrichment that live performance can bring, and we are looking forward to celebrating the Theatre in Schools Scotland 10th year anniversary in 2026”

The performances at James Gillespie’s Primary School concluded a busy autumn term for the Theatre in Schools Scotland project which tours inspiring, live theatre and dance performances to primary schools across Scotland. A Home for Hamish toured to schools from Shetland to Slamannan and will be back on the road with TiSS in March 2026.

Next year will mark ten years of touring world class theatre and dance directly into schools across the country. To celebrate a decade of creativity every Theatre in Schools Scotland performance will be free of charge for participating schools from August 2026 to June 2027, as part of a special TiSS at 10 anniversary programme. Theatre in Schools Scotland tours MESS by Tenterhooks to ASN schools

Produced by Imaginate and National Theatre of Scotland

Theatre in Schools Scotland brings MESS by Tenterhooks to ASN schools in Scotland as part of its touring schools programme of live dance and theatre productions

MESS is visiting ASN schools in Edinburgh, Livingston, Dundee, Tain, Dingwall, Inverness and Aberdeen in September and October 2023 with a first performance at Oaklands School in North Edinburgh on Monday (25 September 2023).

Theatre in Schools Scotland (TiSS), the National Theatre of Scotland and Imaginate’s successful schools touring project is, for the first time, touring a show exclusively to ASN schools in Scotland, as part of its new 23/24 schools programme.

TiSS is bringing the playful, bold show, MESS by Scottish company Tenterhooks, to schools for young people with complex additional support needs in September and October 2023. The show will be touring to ASN schools in Edinburgh, Livingston, Dundee, Tain, Dingwall, Inverness and Aberdeen. Following the tour to schools as part of TiSS, Tenterhooks will bring MESS to CHAS children’s hospices Rachel House in Kinross and Robin House in Balloch.

Created by Tenterhooks and produced by Scottish Theatre Producers, MESS is a bold, playful and emotionally engaging theatre performance made especially for young audiences (age 5-18) with complex additional support needs. In the performance, an ordinary day in the life of a team of caretakers turns unpredictable when, for the first time ever, they attempt to clean a space which has people in it. MESS features comedy, surprise, celebration and mild peril!

Tenterhooks is led by Diane Thornton, Suzie Ferguson, and Fergus Dunnet, two theatre clowns and one visual artist putting audiences at the heart of their bold and playful performances. MESS was co-devised by the cast and creative team from an original idea by Ben Winger.

The MESS company includes performers/devisers: Ben Winger, Diane Thornton, Suzie Ferguson, Kerry Cleland, Ronan McMahon, Carmen Pieraccini and Lucy McGreal.

A number of the MESS ensemble performers work together as Clowndoctors (Hearts & Minds) and their therapeutic clowning practice, which includes spontaneity, complicity and playfulness has informed the development of the performance.

Julian Almeida, Theatre in Schools Scotland Project Manager says: “We’re delighted to be touring our first ever show made especially for young people with complex additional learning needs, which will exclusively visit ASN schools.

“The opportunity for children to experience and participate in performances in their own school environment is invaluable, and TiSS is committed to creating and developing new relationships with schools and teachers throughout Scotland.”

Theatre in Schools Scotland, produced by Imaginate and National Theatre of Scotland brings inspiring live theatre and dance productions, made specially for children and young people, into schools and nurseries.

The new TiSS programme also sees the welcome return of Cloud Man by Constellation Points/Ailie Cohen & Lewis Hetherington which had its original schools tour curtailed due to Covid-19 in 2020; and an extended second tour of Going for Gold: Me and Linford Christie by Victoria Beesley/Catherine Wheels Theatre Company which was first off the TiSS blocks to great acclaim in 2022.

TiSS is excited to be offering younger primary school pupils a brand new dance theatre performance, The Last Forecast, from Catherine Wheels Theatre Company/Bridie Gane.

The TiSS programme is available for schools to book anywhere in Scotland, offering performances in primary schools for all ages. TiSS continues to offer subsidised bookings to schools and create partnerships with local support organisations, ensuring live performances reach schools not only in cities and towns but in remote and rural communities.
