Police seek witnesses following serious assault 

POLICE are appealing for information following a serious assault on Northfield Broadway, Edinburgh, on Thursday, 25 August, 2022.

At around 10pm, a 46-year-old man was attacked near to the traffic lights by two male youths on electric scooters. He attended Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.

The two suspects are both described as: white, slim build, mid-late teens, wearing dark coloured clothing.

They were seen heading off towards Portobello Road.

Detective Sergeant Kimberly Tennant of the Violence Reduction Unit, Gayfield, Edinburgh, said: “This was a violent attack which took place on a fairly busy street with pedestrians and vehicles despite the time.

“It was just after a football game and the pubs had been busy with people out watching it.

“Think back were you in the area and did you see anything which may help us identify these youths?

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are relying on members of the public to provide us with as much information as possible.

Man found guilty of sexual offences in Edinburgh

Detectives in Edinburgh have acknowledged the conviction of George Anthony McClure Newby for sexual offences, including rape.

The 32-year-old was been found guilty following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh on Friday (26 August, 2022).

Newby was convicted of serious sexual crimes against two women in the Edinburgh area in 2020 and 2021.

Detective Inspector McArthur-Kerr of the Edinburgh Public Protection Unit said: “George Newby is a predatory and dangerous man who committed horrendous crimes against his two victims.

“It is thanks to the courage of the women who came forward that he has been now been found guilty of these crimes and the cruelty of his behaviour has been exposed.

“I would like to commend them in their bravery throughout this investigation and trial. Hopefully the verdict today will help them moving forward.”

Appeal for witnesses after police officer injured at Tynecastle

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after an officer was injured prior to the Heart of Midlothian v FC Zurich match on Thursday (25 August, 2022).

Shortly after 7.05pm an officer sustained serious injuries when a traffic cone was thrown on McLeod Street in Edinburgh during the escort of football fans to Tynecastle Park Stadium.

The officer received treatment at the scene.

Detective Constable Andy Lambert, of Gayfield CID, said: “An officer was injured as a result of this incident so we are appealing for anyone who was in the area and witnessed what happened to get in touch.

“I would also encourage anyone who may have video footage of the incident to contact us.

“Anyone with information should contact police via 101, quoting incident 2449 of 25 August. Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Motorcycle crime: three more arrests

#OperationSoteria, Edinburgh Policing Division’s city wide Operation, have been exhausting all lines of enquiry to bring offenders to account for motorcycle thefts and associated anti-social behaviour.

Over the past week, enquiries have led to the arrest of 3 individuals with significant links to motorcycle crime across Edinburgh and the execution of a warrant. This equates to a weekly total of 30 charges, and the recovery of 4 bikes, all as a direct result of our targeted activities.

Since the commencement of #OpSoteria on 20 June 2022, we have made 27 arrests. This translates to 160 charges all relating to motorcycle theft and antisocial behaviour offences and the recovery of 76 motorcycles, bringing the total value of bikes recovered since June to more than £581,713.

Anyone with information about motorcycle crime or the dangerous use of motorcycles in the capital can speak to officers confidentially and anonymously on 101, or through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Man dies in Hermiston Gait crash

A 54-year-old man has died following a road crash on the M8 near Edinburgh.

The incident involved a single vehicle, a black DAF HGV, which overturned a short distance west of the Hermiston Gait Roundabout about 4pm on Tuesday, 23 August.

The driver was rescued from the vehicle but was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. His next of kin are aware.

The road was closed for around 12 hours to allow for an investigation at the scene and for recovery of the vehicle.

Sergeant Paul Ewing, of Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man involved in this incident.

“Our enquiries to establish what led to this incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone with information to come forward.

“We would be keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage of the vehicle.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting reference 2184 of 23 August.”

Police Scotland are hosting a range of online recruitment events via Microsoft Teams for those interested in making a difference and giving back to communities as a police officer.

Black Minority Ethnic and White Minority Ethnic online recruitment events are taking place from 6.30pm – 8.30pm on Thursday, 25th August, Thursday, 8 September, Thursday, 15 September and Thursday, 22 September.

Man jailed for series of rape and sexual assaults in Edinburgh

A 39-year-old man who carried out a series of rapes and other sexual assaults across Edinburgh between November 2018 and August 2020 has been jailed.

Emmanuel Anoliefo (pictured above) was previously convicted at the High Court in Edinburgh in July 2022 of four charges of rape, involving three different women, two charges of sexual assault, three of threatening and abusive behaviour and one of stalking.

Anoliefo was sentenced to 12 years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Mark Seymour said: “Anoliefo preyed on women, some of whom he already knew. He deliberately decided to exploit others who he approached in the street and tried to befriend. He was ruthless, dangerous and cruel and has shown no remorse for his crimes.

“He claimed to have been brought up to respect women but his victims were left terrified and distraught and are still trying to come to terms with what has happened.

“I commend the bravery of every woman who came forward, some of whom testified in court, and hope that the sentencing gives them some kind of closure.

“I would also like to thank the public for their response to our appeal for information in August 2020, as this assisted with our investigation which led to Anoliefo being apprehended and being brought to justice.

“Police Scotland is committed to bringing those responsible for sexual crimes to justice and anyone wishing to report this kind of crime, no matter when it happened, should contact us.”

Missing Edinburgh man Peter Coshan ‘believed dead’

TWO MEN TO APPEAR AT EDINBURGH SHERIFF COURT TODAY

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Peter Coshan (75) have arrested and charged two men and are continuing to appeal for information.

Former Fettes College teacher Peter Coshan was last seen in the Seafield Road area of Edinburgh around 11.50pm on Thursday, 11 August, 2022 and was reported missing the next day.

Officers can confirm that Peter, of Edinburgh, is believed to be dead and they are treating his death as murder. However, his body is yet to be recovered.

Two men, aged 27 and 63, have been arrested and charged in connection. Both men are due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today Thursday, 18 August.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Patrick, of Police Scotland Major Investigation Team is appealing to the public for information. He said: “Our thoughts are very much with Peter’s family at this difficult time.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace Peter and I would encourage anyone with any information regarding Peter’s disappearance to contact police as a matter of urgency.

“Any piece of information, no matter how small or insignificant you think it is, could prove vital so please do pass it on to officers.

“We have also set up a website that gives members of the public access to a form to send information directly to the Major Investigation Team.

Princes Street death: man arrested

A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of a man in Edinburgh.

Around 8.15pm on Saturday, 13 August, 2022, police received a report of a man being seriously injured on Princes Street, The man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

On Tuesday, 16 August, medical staff confirmed to police the 53-year-old man had died.

The deceased can be named as Wayne Elliott (above), originally from the Portsmouth area. Mr Elliott’s family is being supported and kept up to date by specialist officers.

Officers from Police Scotland’s Major Investigations Team is continuing to investigate the death.
