Man ‘critical’ following Princes Street disturbance

Police seek witnesses to fight at West End

POLICE in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after a man suffered a serious head injury on Princes Street yesterday.

Around 8.15pm last night, police received a report of a disturbance in Princes Street, near to Johnnie Walker premises. Officers attended and a 53-year-old man was found injured. He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where medical staff describe his condition as critical.

Officers are gathering and checking relevant CCTV footage for any information on the suspect.

Enquiries carried out so far have established a number of people witnessed the fight between the two men and officers are appealing for those members of the public to contact them.

Detective Inspector Keith Fairbairn said: “A man has been left seriously injured in this incident and it’s imperative we trace whoever is responsible.

“We know that numerous people saw what happened and I am appealing to them to get in touch with us. Any small piece of information could prove vital in this investigation.”

Operation Slow Time: Police report on Capital road safety campaign

Since the start of May 2022 and over the course of around 40 days, police officers working in south east Edinburgh have carried out proactive road safety work. This proactive work has taken place at least 60 different locations.

The road safety work has been in response to community complaints, identified areas of concern and ensuring children are kept safe walking and cycling to and from school.

Our road safety work consisted of:

👉 Before and after school patrols

👉 Roadside speed checks

👉 General road safety stops

👉 Proactive moving checks of vehicles

👉 Operation Closepass (overtaking cyclists safety)

👉 Ensuring the safety of young people participating in the bike bus

👉 Security bike marking events

👉 Roadside breath tests

👉 Police cycle patrols

👉 Partnership working with our colleagues at Edinburgh City Council and in our Road Policing Unit.

As a result of our activity, we have reported over 50 offences (some motorists were charged with multiple offences) and engaged with well over 100 motorists, offering educational road safety advice on a variety of matters.

Sergeant Grant Robertson, South East Community Policing Team said “we remain committed to keeping your roads safe. We will continue to carry out proactive road safety work across the area alongside our partners.

“Whilst we acknowledge the majority of motorists drive responsibly, everybody has a part to play in keeping our roads safe. You can help by driving to the road speed, but importantly road conditions along with parking responsibly and considerately. Cyclists are vulnerable road users, so please give them plenty space when overtaking, at least 1.5 metres.

“Cyclists should remember that all road restrictions also apply to them. This includes traffic lights on red. Please stop and wait, do not cycle past a traffic light on red. This places you and other road users at unnecessary risk.”

Man dies in hospital after collision involving car on Colinton Road

A man has died in hospital following a road traffic collision in Edinburgh last Saturday (30 July).

Paul McGlade, 35, from Edinburgh was struck by a black Mercedes A Class car on Colinton Road while he was on foot around 11.35pm.

He was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he died on Tuesday, 2 August.

The 20-year-old male driver of the car was uninjured.

Sergeant Paul Ewing said: “Our thoughts are with Paul’s family and friends at this difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances which led to this incident and I would urge anyone who may have information but has not yet spoken to an officer to get in touch.

Images of four men released after assault in St Andrew Square

Police Scotland has released images of four males they believe may hold information which might assist in relation to an ongoing investigation into an assault which occurred in St Andrew Square at around 11.50pm on 12 November 2021.

All four men are described as being white, in their early 20s.

The first male is described as blonde and was wearing a black top, jeans and white trainers.

The second male is described as having dark hair and was wearing a grey Stone Island jumper, black body warmer, grey joggers and white trainers.

The third male is described as having dark hair and was wearing a grey hooded top with black trousers.

The fourth male is described as having dark hair, shaved at the sides, and was wearing a grey hooded top, shorts and black trainers.

Detective Sergeant Ashley Rea of Gayfield CID said: “I would urge the males, or anyone who has information relating to these males, to make contact with the Police.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact with Police at Gayfield CID, Edinburgh via 101 quoting reference number 4198 of 12/11/21.

“Alternatively, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be passed on anonymously.”

Vandalism at Trinity Primary: Appeal for information

POLICE are appealing for information following vandalism at a school in North Edinburgh.

The incident took place at Trinity Primary School on Newhaven Road at about 1.30pm on Friday, 29th July, during which over £5000 worth of damage was caused to school equipment.

A thorough investigation is ongoing and anyone with any information is urged to contact Police via 101, quoting incident 2591 of the 29th July 2022 or anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police launch Operation Summer City

POLICE in Edinburgh have launched Operation Summer City 2022 to keep the public safe during the festival season.

Chief Inspector Mark Hamilton, Operation Summer City Silver Commander, said: “It’s always an incredible atmosphere within Edinburgh during the Festival and with so many people visiting our city, it’s important we have appropriate resources in place to keep people safe and respond to the range of potential incidents that could occur.

”As the city gets busier, we may see reports of certain acquisitive crimes rising and while we will have an increased presence in place to investigate these, the public can play an important role in helping prevent these offences by always keeping hold of their stuff, being mindful of anyone getting too close to them and keeping valuables stored safely away safely.

“Many of our licensed premises will also be operating with later licences and that can mean an increase in alcohol-related disorder and violence. To minimise this, we’ve been liaising with bar and nightclub staff to remind them of their licensing responsibilities and to ensure they share information with one another about anyone who has been within their venue causing trouble.

“I would ask anyone coming into Edinburgh to enjoy the night-time economy to do so responsibly and not have your evening ruined because of excessive consumption. Within the Capital we have special bail conditions that can be imposed on anyone who commits a crime in a licensed premises, or as a result of having been within one. If you are charged in connection with an offence the bail conditions will prohibit you from entering any other licensed premises within the city centre until the conclusion of your trial.

“The last two years without the Festival in its full capacity have been a huge miss to the city of Edinburgh and its local residents and businesses. We look forward to welcoming everyone back, but please work with us to ensure it’s a memorable event for all the right reasons.”

Operation Soteria: the story so far

#OperationSoteria, Edinburgh Policing Division’s city wide Operation continues to put the brakes on criminals involved in motorcycle thefts and associated anti-social behaviour.

Over the past week, enquiries have led to the arrest of 5 individuals with significant links to motorcycle crime across Edinburgh. This equates to a weekly total of 42 charges and the recovery of 11 bikes, all as a direct result of our targeted activities.

Since the commencement of #OpSoteria on 20 June 2022, we have made 17 arrests, with a further individual reported for warrant.

This translates to 104 charges all relating to motorcycle theft and antisocial behaviour offences and the recovery of 51 motorcycles, bringing the total value of bikes recovered since June to more than £360,000.

Anyone with information about motorcycle crime or the dangerous use of motorcycles in the capital can speak to officers confidentially and anonymously on 101, or through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Colinton Road collision: can you help?

Road Policing Officers are appealing for information following a serious road traffic collision in Edinburgh.

Around 10.35pm last night (Saturday, 30 July, 2022), officers received a report a 35-year-old man having been struck by a black Mercedes-Benz A Class car in Colinton Road.

Emergency services attended and the male pedestrian was taken by ambulance to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Medical staff describe his condition as critical.

The 20-year-old driver of the car was uninjured.

A section of the road was closed for around six hours to allow crash scene investigators to conduct their enquiries.

Sergeant Iain McIntyre said: “We believe the area would have been busy at the time and are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision.

“In particular, we are keen to speak to the driver of a black cab, who was either dropping off, or picking up, passengers in Colinton Road at the time on the incident.

“We would also be keen to speak to those passengers as they may have information which could be vital to our enquiries.

“I would ask anyone with dash cam devices to check their footage as it could hold images, which could prove to be significant in our enquiries.”
