Appeal after Royal Mile whisky robbery

Police are investigating following a high-value break-in and theft in the city centre. The incident happened sometime between 10pm on Friday 7th September and 6.40am on Saturday 8th September at the Whisky Trail licensed premises on the High Street.

Witness appeal following George Street robbery

Police are appealing for witnesses following a robbery in the city centre. The incident happened around 5.30am on Friday (6th September) on George Street.

A 41-year-old woman was walking close to the Bank of Scotland premises near the junction with Frederick Street when she was approached by a male who demanded her property before grabbing the bag she was carrying. He then walked westbound on George Street.

Inquiries are ongoing to identify the suspect and anyone with information or who saw a male acting suspiciously in the George Street area at the time is asked to come forward.

The suspect is described as male, white, 5’6”, 18-22 years, brown hair, wearing a dark zip up jacket, dark trousers and brown boots. He spoke with a local Edinburgh accent.

Detective Sergeant Lesley Robertson from the Violence Reduction Unit at Gayfield Police Station said: “Thankfully the victim was unhurt however was left badly shaken. We are now conducting various lines of inquiry to trace the suspect and anyone who was on George Street at the time and can help us identify this male should contact police immediately.”

Operation Drive: Police Scotland to take action against uninsured drivers

  • Police Scotland will undertake Operation Drive Insured on 7-13 September 2019 in a national week of enforcement activity to seize uninsured drivers’ vehicles and improve road safety.
  • Uninsured drivers are more likely to cause accidents and are often involved in wider crime.
  • Drivers without insurance will have their vehicle seized and potentially crushed. In cases that go to court, offenders can receive an unlimited fine and a driving ban.

Police issue warning to motorists

Road Policing Officers are warning motorists of the consequences of driving on restricted carriageways.

At around 2.30pm on Saturday 31st August, police responded to a road collision on the A720 (city bypass) westbound carriageway between Gilmerton and Lasswade.

During this incident a temporary road closure was put in place, but police  officers observed a number of individuals opting to drive the wrong way on the slip-road towards Gilmerton, to avoid the stationary traffic.

Ten motorists were charged with dangerous driving as a result and others are now being reminded that they will face similar action if they drive in a manner, which puts themselves or others at risk.


Inspector Roger Park from the Road Policing Unit in Edinburgh said: “While we fully appreciate the frustration caused when you are stuck in traffic, be it as a result of an accident, or general congestion, it is entirely unacceptable to drive the wrong way or on un-permitted areas, in an attempt to avoid delays.

“Such action increases your chances of being involved in a collision and it will not be tolerated.

“We are out on patrol, monitoring the road network on a daily basis and if you are found to be committing such an offence, you can expect to be charged.”

Neighbour jailed for serious sexual assault of woman in her home

A man who subjected a woman to a serious sexual assault in her Corstorphine home has been jailed.

Police release CCTV images following Saughtonhall robbery

Police have released CCTV images of a man they wish to speak to in connection a robbery in Saughtonhall Drive.

A man entered a convenience store on Saughtonhall Drive at around 5.30pm on Friday 26th July and threatened staff before leaving with a three-figure sum of cash.

He is described as white, aged in his thirties, around 5ft 8ins tall and of stocky build. He was wearing a navy-coloured jacket and dark-coloured jeans.

Detective Constable Craig Donnelly from Corstorphine CID said: “Fortunately nobody was injured during this incident but staff at the premises were left understandably shaken by the ordeal.

“I would appeal to anyone who recognises the man pictured, and who can help identify and trace him, to contact police as soon as possible.”

Man jailed for Morrison Street attack

A man who assaulted a woman and attempted to sexually assault her has been jailed. At Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday, Juan Martin Comba Valdez was convicted and sentenced to 18-months in prison for the attack, which took place in Morrison Street during the early morning of Sunday 12th May.
