Licketyspit’s Big Porridge & Play is going online

WE may all be at home, but, in our imaginations, we can go anywhere, be anyone, do anything. All we need to play is each other!

Scotland’s pioneering inter-generational imaginary play specialists,   Licketyspit, have received funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to adapt their popular family project, Big Porridge & Play Glasgow, to tackle social isolation and support families across Scotland during the Coronavirus lockdown.

The charity will bring groups of families together via Zoom to play games, sing songs and go on imaginary adventures – all from their own living rooms!

In trial sessions, families have made Flying Butterfly Cake, talked to Polar Bears, flown through a Tornado and climbed a Hot Chocolate Volcano with the Licketyspit actor-pedagogues!

Feedback has been hugely positive: “We enjoyed seeing others and being creative with everyone and we would love it to happen again.” (Boatemma, Ruchill); “It’s so nice to see everyone after so many days.” (Piyanshu, 8, the Gorbals).

Big Porridge & Play has been created with and for children in some of the most disadvantaged areas of Glasgow and supports families to tap into their imaginations for hours of joy, excitement, creative learning and connection.

As one mother, from Ruchill, reflected last year: “Their imagination has come on so much and they feel comfortable playing without any objects/toys now.”

Families across Scotland with children aged 3-12 will be able to join Porridge & Play open sessions – imaginary Play Sessions for the whole family online every Saturday morning at 10am from Saturday 30 May.

TO JOIN email cfn@licketyspit.com or text 07413 800 342

There will be a dedicated CFN Facebook Group and lots of ideas for things to do at home in between sessions. “It’s fun, relaxing, good for bonding with your child and reducing stress.” (Dad, Whiteinch)

Licketyspit is one of a number of organisations working together to highlight the urgent need to address ‘digital inequality’ during lockdown, through the No One Left Behind Digital Scotland Campaign and with colleagues on the Ethnic Minority National Resilience Network. They will work with BEMIS Scotland to ensure that digital access isn’t a barrier to participating in Big Porridge & Play.

Artistic director and CEO of Licketyspit, Virginia Radcliffe, said: “Being with children gives adults a reason to play, but we all need what children need, especially to help us cope with the current crisis – play helps us relax and access our limitless imaginations.

“The Coronavirus lockdown is a confusing and anxious time for many children as they find themselves separated from their daily routine and friendships.

“Playing with adults who take play as seriously as they do empowers children, and with parental engagement shown to be the biggest single factor in a child’s capacity to learn, playing together in Big Porridge & Play online is a wonderful way to support children to flourish during lockdown.

“It’s very important for us that children continue to have agency and autonomy in these sessions, to invent and delight in their own and others’ rich imaginations. We can make each other laugh, and we can sing!

“We’re delighted that this wonderful family play project can still happen online and will be working with third sector colleagues to ensure digital inequality isn’t a barrier to families in the greatest need participating.”

The National Lottery Community Fund, Scotland director, Neil Ritch, said: “In these uncertain times, our priority is to ensure that National Lottery money continues to flow to charities, voluntary sector organisations and grassroots groups.

“I would like to congratulate Licketyspit on their award, theirs is an important project and will support people now and in the future when they can physically come back together to make great things happen in their community.”

To take part in these free sessions, join the Licketyspit Children & Families Network (CFN) – an inclusive community of families who embrace children’s rights and imaginary play, at www.licketyspit.com/families/network and email or text Children & Families Network producer, Ruby Zajac, on cfn@licketyspit.com / 07413 800 342.

MSP celebrates Play Day in Edinburgh

To celebrate National Play Day today (Wednesday 1 August 2018), Edinburgh Pentlands MSP Gordon Macdonald  will be joining locals at Clovenstone Community Centre, to mark the importance of children’s right to play, with everything from loose parts play and street arts to water play and a messy baby paint zone.

National Play Day will see thousands of children and their families out and about, playing at hundreds of community events across the country. From local community events to national events organised in parks and open spaces, Playday takes many different shapes to allow everyone to take part. As well as the events, organised by Play Scotland, National Play Day is a campaign that underlines the importance of play in children’s lives.

Gordon Macdonald MSP will be joining Clovenstone Community Centre’s Play Day, from 1pm-4pm, which will bring local organisations together with loose parts play provided by the City of Edinburgh Council, pop up kitchen with tasting Change, drumming with Dads rock, sensory baby zone with Starcatchers, Street Arts, natural play with edible estates and Bookbug with Wester Hailes Library.

North Edinburgh Arts are also participating, holding a Picnic and Play event from11am to 1.15pm. The MSP is encouraging everyone to try and make it along, have fun and celebrate the benefits of play!

Commenting SNP MSP for Edinburgh Pentlands, Gordon Macdonald, said: We all have great childhood memories of playing with friends, a lot of the memories being outdoors. Playing is something you are born into, it’s how you learn and express your creativity. The benefits to the health and wellbeing of children are crystal clear – when you see the smiles and hear the laughter of children playing together.

“National Play Day’s, like the one I’m going to at Clovenstone Community Centre today, gives children and families a chance to get out and play safely in streets and local neighbourhoods – getting to know new people in your area and strengthening the community.”

Dear Friends,

Licketyspit was founded in 2004, so we have survived and thrived, often against the odds, for ten years!
We have been kept going by the thousands of Scottish children, families and teachers who help us to create our work and support it with such enthusiasm and by the fantastic artists and colleagues who have consistently gone the extra mile for us in the interests of children and families.
We hope everyone we know and who knows us will want to celebrate with us by donating a £6 ticket for a child/family who wouldn’t otherwise be able to come to our Christmas show, Hare & Tortoise at North Edinburgh Arts (1st – 20th December).
If you go to the Licketyspit website http://www.licketyspit.com there’s a PayPal Donate button on the front page and we will email a Gift Aid form to you afterwards. These tickets will be distributed through The Haven Project and Circle, both organisations working in Muirhouse with disadvantaged families.
This is our fourth production of Hare & Tortoise following amazing outdoor performances on Glasgow Green for the Commonwealth Games Festival 2014 in July. It features Actor/Licketyspit Associate Artist,  Johnny Austin (Quangle Wangle, Magic Spaghetti) and the wonderful Buchan Lennon.
We are having a Birthday performance (limited ticket availability) on Friday 12th December at 5pm followed by a Bun Brothers Tea hosted by Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People, Tam Baillie at 6.15pm. We would be delighted if you could join us for either or both events. We have attached an invitation below, please feel free to circulate to any colleagues or contacts that you think may be interested. Please RSVP to info@licketyspit.com

Hope to see you there!

Roads Closed for Total Craigroyston’s Play Out

Muirhouse Park was closed off for four hours yesterday for a Play Out event. Total Craigroyston’s Sarah Low explained what it’s all about: ‘Play Out involves closing a street for a few hours, meaning children and families can play safely in their community. Among the activities were lots of traditional games – skipping, football, rounders and even ‘pop-up theatre’! Local parents identifies the need for events like this during the recent Total Craigroyston consultations.”

Local man Robert Pearson was there, and he takes up the story:

Road closed signs positioned at either end of MuirhousePark, this was out of the norm. Was it another police incident – or something else?

It was certainly something else and something that’s never happened in Muirhouse  before! Local group Total Craigroyston had arranged a fun, safe environment for children and families to play.

From 11am until 3pm the street was a no-go for any motor vehicles, which was enough to get the kids smiling. But when the fun started, the smiles got even bigger!  Total Craigroyston staff and volunteers from North Edinburgh Women’s Group had many games and activates in mind, and officers from Lothian and Borders Police were also here to enjoy the fun and get to know the locals.

Huge thanks to Mr and Mrs Hardwick who kindly allowed a water slide to be set up in their very own garden, it was not long until the kids had formed a very orderly queue!

Who would have thought that a little bit of fairy liquid, water and a sheet of plastic would keep many kids happy for many hours, with competitions to see who could slide furthest.

The fun went on for many hours; other activities included chalking on the road, designing your very own puppet, rounders, football and much more.

Father of three David Graham, of Ferry Road Drive, only heard of the event from one of his friends just the day before. He said: “It’s fantastic to hear kids joking and laughing and it’s fantastic to see so many parents enjoying the activities with their children.” David was also keen to promote next week’s Total Craigroyston event, which will take place in his street.

Many adults took part in the game of rounders – that was until someone managed to lose one ball over the roof and another in the hedge! It was all part of the fun.

My own children really enjoyed the day. Six year old Thomas said “My favourite part of the day was the water balloons” –  and he especially loved throwing the balloons as the police officer! Nine year old Gary added that it was brilliant be able to play safely in the street and not have to worry about cars. He really enjoyed the water slide and making his own puppets.

Over 100 children enjoyed the fun and joined in with many activities, and despite the heavy sudden downpours the fun continued. Huge thanks to everyone who helped and made this day possible.
