Seasonal Artistic Disorder: Bernie Reid exhibition at hubCAP Gallery

Exhibition / Event Title.
Seasonal Artistic Disorder: Past and present works by Bernie Reid
Artist/s / Participants:
Bernie Reid
About the Exhibition:Seasonal Artistic DisorderPast and present works by Bernie Reid
The work included in SAD could be seen as an inventory. I wanted to take the opportunity allowed by this exhibition to sit different works from the last fifteen years alongside current works in order to reflect on the sometimes dispirit avenues of my practice and to see if new ideas emerge from these assemblies.

It is sometimes a rare moment for an artist to be able to set out works side by side and have the space, both physical and mental, to see how the works play, conflict, or settle with each other so I wanted to take advantage of this time to do some self-curation.

My past works engage with the figurative tradition seen through the lens of my history with graffiti and stencil art and they are often an attempt to work through the conflict between my influences.

I find challenge in sampling the traditional and the new and trying to try to coalesce these samples into something greater than the sum of its parts.

There are also examples of my interest in the decorative arts with my painted rugs and a sculpture piece which will appear “naked” for this outing.

At present I’m interested in the phenomena of AI generated art and its effect on painting and how art is perceived in general and I’ve tried to address my own issues with this burgeoning technology.

My hope for the show is, through the mixture of work from different periods, to have a kaleidoscopic moment for my own edification and the viewers entertainment.

Artist Bio:

Bernie Reid is an Edinburgh-based artist with an international reputation whose body of work includes mixed media paintings, trompe l’oeil decorative rugs, graphic screen prints and sculpture. Reid’s explorations of subculture, fashion, graffiti and eroticism can be seen throughout the work of his 30-year career as an illustrator and artist.

Reid often employs mediums and techniques associated with graffiti such as stencils and spray paint in his work.

His mixed media paintings use these techniques alongside traditional oils to depict abstracted and psychedelic figurative forms influenced by the subcultural practices of sampling and hacking established culture in order to create new identities, the deviant sensibility of graffiti never being too distant from the outcome.

Themes of subcultures and eroticism also manifest in Reid’s graphic screen prints. Driven by a taste for control and technical efficiency and influenced by the stylings of mid-century advertising and Italian futurism – Reid uses exaggerated shapes and line work to create figurative illustrations inspired by urban society.

As an illustrator Reid worked on commissions for clients such as Wallpaper magazine, Stella McCartney, Telegraph Newspaper, Habitat, Liberty London, Boxfresh, ID magazine and has had his personal work featured in a number of illustration books and journals.

Reid’s work has been shown internationally in galleries which include MOMA New York, SFMOMA, 019 in Ghent, Serpentine Galleries in London, Garage Museum in Moscow and on the island of Stromboli for the Fiorucci Art Trust.

Additionally, Reid regularly facilitates projects for Artlink, a local charity that aims to help people with mental health connect with a creative practice and others seeking to find wellness through art.

Nancy’s House: Exhibition by Megan Rudden at HUBCAP Gallery

hubCAP Gallery is delighted to present “Nancy’s House,” a new thought-provoking exhibition by artist Megan Rudden.

The show features work produced during and after Megan’s tenure as an artist in residence at Edinburgh College’s Granton Campus, exploring the intersection of site-specific art, spiritualism, and metaphysical research.

Megan’s deep engagement with the location of the college, built on the grounds where her great grandparents once lived and worked, has resulted in a unique and collaborative body of work which reflects not only on the physical site, but delves into the realms of the unseen. Many of the works in this exhibition have been made in collaboration, with Megan’s family, with her peers in psychic training at Glasgow Spiritual Centre and with the spirit of her great gran Nancy.

During this residency, Megan immersed herself in the history and atmosphere of her great-grandparents’ home. From conducting a séance in a meeting room to contacting spirits in the college library, she utilised a variety of methods to connect with the past. The exhibition showcases a range of works, including sculptures, drawings, film and writing, which together navigate the tangible and intangible aspects of the place.

Megan Rudden is an artist, writer and psychic medium in training. Through an interdisciplinary practice her work attempts to create non-linear, trans-historical narratives that use place as a focal point to connect stories across time. With a background in sculpture, Megan is interested in how language can evoke materiality, resulting in a captivating and immersive experience for the audience.

The public is invited to the opening event on Thursday, 21st March, from 5pm to 8pm at hubCAP Gallery. The exhibition will be open to the public from Monday to Friday, 11 am to 4 pm, until 27th March.

Join us in experiencing “Nancy’s House,” where art, history, and the metaphysical converge in a captivating exploration of past and present.

Edinburgh Multicultural Festival returns this month

Edinburgh Multicultural Festival, supported by the City of Edinburgh Council, will be held at Edinburgh College (Granton Campus) and Lauriston Castle on 30 September and 1 October 2023.

The programme features a diverse range of performers and visual artists telling their stories through creative writing and visual literacy workshops, artwork, poetry, storytelling, music, theatre, and dance.

There are also family activities, including arts and crafts, puppetry, living statues, reading sessions, and drumming workshops facilitated by Visual Literacy Matters and other artists. The festival truly has something for everyone.

This year’s musical acts include Los Chichanos, Mio Shudo, Motown Brothers, The Spinning Blowfish, Elaine Cheng, dance artists – Sam Vaherlehto and TuFlamenco as well as theatre makers – Catherine Bisset, Flavia D’Avila, Luntu Masiza and Olivier Van Den Hende.

The festival celebrates the cultural diversity of the Capital by bringing together local and international artists and creating experiences to be shared by all communities.

This year marks the 5th birthday of the festival, which has provided platforms, both on stages and digitally, for over 150 local and international artists of diverse backgrounds, and generated over 60k worldwide views since its inception.

All events are free but ticketed. For more information, please visit the Edinburgh Multicultural Festival website.

Culture and Communities Convener, Councillor Val Walker said: “It’s fantastic to see the return of the Edinburgh Multicultural Festival later this month. I’m incredibly proud that we are supporting local artists of all backgrounds to get involved with a truly unique festival. We all want to see as many of our residents as possible expressing themselves and adding to Edinburgh’s already excellent cultural sector.

“Edinburgh’s diversity is one of our greatest strengths and this festival is just one fantastic example of our outstanding year-round cultural offerings. I want to wish the best of luck to all the organisers, performers and participants and I’m sure that this fifth year of the festival will be a great success.”

Edinburgh Multicultural Festival Director, Morgan Njobo said:We are grateful to the City of Edinburgh Council for their support, thanks to which we can create opportunities for local diverse artists to share their work and cultures. As a South African artist based in Edinburgh myself, I value how welcoming the city is to the international talent.

“The festival is a celebration of cultural diversity in Edinburgh that is representative of the increasingly more diverse population in the city. This year we feature local artists of African, Asian, Caribbean, European, and South American origin thus creating a world stage at your doorstep.

“The festival has gone from strength to strength since 2019 as we continue to attract more participation in the arts in Edinburgh. Partnering with Edinburgh College in Granton and Lauriston Castle in Cramond allows us to create unique cultural experiences for audiences and participants of all ages and backgrounds while appreciating the hidden gem locations in Edinburgh.

“Let’s enjoy being able to be back together and support diverse artists and creatives here in Scotland.”

National Galleries of Scotland seeks views on plans for major development in North Edinburgh

CONSULTATION EVENTS NEXT WEEK

A public consultation has started on ambitious plans by the National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) to construct a vitally important new building in Granton, North Edinburgh. Titled The Art Works, the facility will house Scotland’s extraordinary national art collection and provide a significant, long-term contribution to benefit and enhance the local community for years to come.

Located at the heart of one of Scotland’s most diverse yet socioeconomically deprived areas, The Art Works has a unique dual purpose at its core: firstly, as a base for more than 100,000 works of art to be cared for, conserved and researched; and secondly as a key focal point for community investment, pride and growth.

The building will by fully accessible and open to all, offering world-class visitor facilities, rooms for education and community programmes, and new outdoor public spaces – all designed to meet the needs of and help realise the huge potential of the local community.

Previously known as the National Collection Facility, proposals for a building of this kind have been in the early stages of concept development since 2015. Now known as The Art Works, the project aims to bring Scotland’s vast and extraordinary national art collection into a single future-proofed location.

At present the collection is stored across several sites where access and space are extremely limited, logistics are difficult, and conditions are suboptimal for enabling the full potential for public access, conservation and research to be realised; and also for allowing works to be made available for display and loan.

The Art Works will be instrumental in addressing each of these issues, enabling much greater access to and engagement with Scotland’s artistic treasures. The scope for touring the collection around Scotland and internationally will be greatly increased, meaning more people than ever before will be able to connect and engage with Scotland’s incredible artistic legacy.

Sir John Leighton, Director-General of the National Galleries of Scotland said: “This is an incredibly exciting moment for both the National Galleries of Scotland and the communities of North Edinburgh.

“The Art Works has the potential to be truly transformative, not only in how Scotland’s national collection of art is cared for and shared more widely, but also by providing much needed new facilities to unleash the creative confidence and spirit of the local area.

“I would encourage everyone to get involved in the consultation and together help design a major new building in Granton that will work for and provide inspiration to all.”

As part of the Granton Waterfront project, which is adopting ambitious plans on low-carbon travel modes and energy-efficient new housing, The Art Works will play an important role in Scotland’s green recovery as the country’s largest building designed to the Passivhaus standard, which goes beyond the requirements for meeting Scotland’s 2030 carbon reduction targets.

The Art Works will be located on a site west of Madelvic House on Granton Park Avenue. The project is at the pre-planning application consultation stage which enables members of the public to share their views on the proposals.

These will be considered before NGS proceeds to submit a full planning application.

People can find out more about the proposals at an event on Monday 6 June 2022 from 3pm-7pm at Edinburgh College (Granton Campus).

In addition, an online question and answer session with the project team is planned for Tuesday 7 June 2022 between 5pm-7pm.

Further information on the proposals, including a survey and FAQs, can be found on the NGS website at www.nationalgalleries.org/theartworks.

Comments should be made by 1 July 2022, when the consultation will close.
