Sign up for The Big Obstacle
Dear colleague,
Granton Youth Centre are going to be hosting a 4k charity fun run called The Big Obstacle and we would like to invite you to take part.
The Big Obstacle will be held on Sunday 18 September at Inverleith Park as a joint event with Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership. There will also be a walk and cycle festival on the same day!
This is your opportunity to fundraise for your organisation/charity. The Big Obstacle will bring the community together and encourage young people and adults to get active and have fun!
All participants will receive a t-shirt, certificate, medal and healthy snack.
Availability is limited and will be on a strictly first come, first serve basis. Both individuals and teams (up to 5 people per team) can register.

Any questions or completed registration forms to be returned by Friday 12th of August to this email address. Even if you want to book a team slot and we can get team information closer to the time that is okay.
The Big Obstacle has been planned and organised by local young people for young people!

Planning and Design: It’s YOUR community
Communities to have their say in the design of their area
Communities across Scotland will have the chance to map out the future of their towns with design experts. The Scottish Government is launching two funds to allow people to have a direct role in making their towns and villages better places to live.
Funding of £300,000 is available across two grant schemes – the Design Charrettes programme and the Activating Ideas Fund.
Charrettes bring together the public, stakeholders and designers over a number of days to draw up viable proposals, while the Activating Ideas fund will support participation and empowerment initiatives in disadvantaged areas.
Minister for Local Government Kevin Stewart said: “The quality of our places has an important influence on our lives. This Government is committed to empowering communities and involving them in the planning process.
“We have already seen really good examples of this in the few years since the charrettes programme has been running. In Maybole the Community Association and Community Council sourced additional funding to modernise and improve access to the Town Hall gardens. And in Girvan there is a successful plan for a new swimming facility which is due to open in 2017 following the closure of the local pool.
“Local communities have a wealth of knowledge about their local area. Bringing communities together with design expertise will enable ideas and proposals to be developed to deliver positive change. This initiative provides a way of enabling people across Scotland to have their say on the long- term future of their community.”
Meet the Hi-Vis Dads!

Family life can face many challenges for families in the Forth Ward, where Circle works through its Haven Project. Through the Arts Workshop, we gave Haven families the chance to consider all the amazing potential being realised in their father’s role.
The fathers’ and children’s energy took on the vision of the lead artist, Angela Austin, and truly took on a life of its own. This 8’ x 6’ behemoth was full of colour and energy in a way that only a child could have envisioned.
Fathers and their children worked creative magic each afternoon from the 11th to the 15th of July. The project now has the dual role of advertising and celebrating fatherhood with all the other fathers in their local area.
This will be achieved when the final sculpture is exhibited from
September 19th – October 7th at North Edinburgh Arts
along with the photography of Fiona Burness, who visited the project during its construction.
We have been able to celebrate with families the joy of being a father and now we want to encourage all the other dads out there!

What next for West Pilton Park? Report published
Dear Friends/Colleagues,
Some of you might know that we have doing lots of work on West Pilton Park over the last year with the aim of improving negative perceptions and getting more people using it. We’ve been working with local organisations, the council and residents from the area to hold events on the park. These have enabled us to talk to lots of people about what would make them want to use the park more and their suggestions have been used to develop improvement plans, some of which are underway already!
Also, the events have been such a success that there is now a constituted ‘Friends of West Pilton Park (Parklife)’ group made up of local people enthusiastic about seeing change on the park. ‘West Pilton Parklife’ are already busy planning an annual programme of events on the park for the local community. It is after all, a great open space in the heart of North Edinburgh with potential to have something for everyone.

West Pilton West Granton Community Council meets on Tuesday
Please find attached the agenda for our next meeting, Tuesday 2nd August at West Pilton Neighbourhood Centre.
We are inviting Councillor Vicki Redpath as our Community Council’s Returning Officer to speak to us (Edinburgh’s community council elections take place this September).
Speakers will also be in attendance from the Housing Planning Department to present and outline the housing proposals for West Pilton Grove and Crewe Road Gardens.
