With just a few days left until the 10th anniversary of Poppyscotland’s popular Sportive, supporters are being urged to sign up today and get on their bikes in aid of the Armed Forces charity.

Taking place on Sunday, September 21, 2025, the Sportive features four routes designed for different ability levels. It is split into two distinct types – the Classic (46, 68 and 102 miles) and the Wee Yin (22 miles).

As in previous years, riders will start in Prestonpans, East Lothian, before following the coastal route to North Berwick and beyond. Classic routes include a timed hill climb and feed stations, with distances ranging from 46 to 102 miles, while the Wee Yin (22 miles) offers a flatter, family-friendly ride through Gullane and Aberlady before returning to the coast. All routes finish in Prestonpans.

The event wouldn’t be possible without the support of the charity’s many volunteers who staff the various stations throughout the routes, or its sponsors, including Leith Cycles, based on Leith Walk, Edinburgh, who have been a staple supporter throughout the event’s history.

Sportive organiser Richard Todd said: “We are extremely grateful to the team at Leith Cycles for their support with our Sportive event each year, ensuring that they are on hand at pit stops throughout each route to assist with any minor bike faults.

“As a small token of our appreciation, we recently presented owner Richard Dowsett with a framed Poppyscotland memorabilia jersey marking 100 years of the Scottish poppy.”

Richard Dowsett, owner of Leith Cycles, said it was a pleasure and privilege to support Poppyscotland over the years. He added: “We are a small, independent business and we are delighted to help once again by providing both manpower and the necessary tools or equipment that may be needed for any bicycle issue on the day.

“Just being there to help cyclists with any issues they may have is imperative so that participants can complete their Sportive route safely.

We really enjoy being a part of the Sportive and we continue to help, knowing what a fabulous charity Poppyscotland is in supporting our country’s Armed Forces community.”

Entry for the Classic routes is £40 per rider (minimum age: 16). The Wee Yin route is £25 per rider or £40 per family (2 adults and 2 children). The minimum age is 12, and entry is free for riders under 16.

Entry includes electronic timing, mechanical support, food and water stations, coffee at the start, tea and toast at the finish, the ‘King and Queen of The Heugh’ timed hill climb, sweeper service, and a finisher’s gift.

New Look, Same Message: ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’

  • ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ rail security campaign given its first major refresh since it was launched almost a decade ago. 
  • Bold new design makes the British Transport Police’s 61016 number more prominent, helping the public easily identify and report suspicious activity. 
  • £17 million investment to better connect CCTV at train stations, enabling greater real-time access for police to accelerate investigations and help passengers feel safer. 

Train passengers across Great Britain will start to see new ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ posters and hear updated announcements from today (16 September 2025), marking the campaign’s first major refresh in a decade.

Since the campaign’s launch in 2016, reports to BTP’s 61016 text service have increased more than eightfold to 255,088 a year – helping to improve the safety of travellers across the rail network.

To make reporting even easier, posters have had a makeover to clearly display the 61016 text number, and the renowned ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ train and station announcements have had an upgrade to make their wording clearer.

The new campaign is designed to help passengers more easily spot when something doesn’t look right, by explicitly showing and telling them what this could be, like an unattended bag, or someone accessing an area they shouldn’t.

The Government is also providing a nearly £17 million funding boost so Network Rail can make improvements to enhance police access to CCTV from railway stations. This will enable BTP officers to have more access to real-time footage from across the railway and help to identify offenders as quickly as possible, supporting the Government’s Plan for Change by making our streets safer.

The Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, is meeting British Transport Police (BTP) Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi at London Victoria to unveil the renewed campaign and hear about how it helps passengers report to the BTP.

Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, said: “‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ isn’t just an earworm that’s been the soundtrack to our trains for nearly a decade now – it’s a really important security and public safety campaign. 

“It plays a crucial role in making our railways safe, and this refresh will help spread its message to even more people. 

“We’re committed to making our railway as secure as possible, which is why we’re also improving CCTV connectivity, to help police identify offenders and bring them to justice faster – particularly key as we work towards our goal of halving violence against women and girls in the next decade.” 

BTP Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said: Our officers are out across the railway network 24/7 working to keep the public safe – but ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ reminds us that passengers and rail staff also have a vital role to play in being our eyes and ears.

“Our pioneering 61016 text service is a simple and discreet way to report crime across the rail network, and thanks to the ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ campaign, you can save 61016 in your phone today and contact BTP immediately if something doesn’t feel right on your journey.

“Over 1 million 61016 texts have been sent since its introduction in 2013 – so I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the public for continuing to help us create a network of vigilance. Trust your instincts and text us on 61016.”   

Security Minister, Dan Jarvis, said: “‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ has become part of the national consciousness – whether you’re commuting into work or waiting for a coffee at the station, we’re all familiar with the message.

“As we relaunch the campaign, I encourage everyone to look out for one another, trust your instincts and if something doesn’t feel right, text British Transport Police on 61016.” 

The campaign has also evolved to encourage passengers to report any non-urgent crimes to the BTP, including anything that makes passengers feel unsafe or uncomfortable, helping police keep our railway safe.

For example, in May, a man was jailed after he sexually assaulted three women on trains in London. All three of his victims reported the assaults to the BTP, including by texting 61016, which meant BTP officers could obtain CCTV, identify the perpetrator, and bring him to justice. 

The new design marks a new era for the internationally renowned ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ campaign, which launched in 2016 with a focus on counterterrorism. Although it serves a very serious purpose, ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ has also become a cultural phenomenon, entering everyday vocabulary, inspiring punny spinoffs, and even a play of the same name. 

Lucy McAuliffe, Network Rail’s Sussex route director and crime lead for the southern region, said: “This refreshed campaign will ultimately keep our railway running reliably by encouraging passengers to be our eyes and ears. 

“When people speak up, it really helps us respond faster and more effectively to keep everything on time. 

“It’s all part of a wider range of measures we’re taking to keep people safe and of our shared commitment to getting everyone home safe everyday.” 

Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Security, Policing and Enforcement, said:”For a decade, the ‘See it. Say it. Sorted’ campaign has been instrumental in encouraging public vigilance and providing a simple way for our customers to take action to keep our railways network safe.  

“British Transport Police’s 61016 text service provides an easy and accessible way for passengers to report crime, any unusual behaviour, or anything that makes them feel unsafe. 61016 remains central to our shared commitment that every journey in London is safe and feels safe.  

“We’re proud to be working alongside the BTP, the Department for Transport, and other partners as we launch the next phase of this important campaign across our network.”

Securing bus manufacturing jobs in Scotland

First Minister visits Alexander Dennis

A package has been announced to support the retention of manufacturing jobs at Alexander Dennis in Scotland.

On a visit to the bus company’s site in Larbert, Falkirk, First Minister John Swinney confirmed approximately £4 million towards a furlough scheme until work can recommence.

To access this salary support funding, the company will need to provide evidence of sufficient orders to sustain its operations in Scotland.

The First Minister said: “The Scottish Government wants to retain the manufacturing workforce of Alexander Dennis. My officials have discussed detailed terms with management and reached agreement on the principles of a company run furlough scheme.

“To access the Scottish Government funding, the company will need to provide evidence of orders that will enable its manufacturing to continue in Scotland. Although the details are commercially sensitive, I am aware Alexander Dennis is working hard to do that.

“This is intended to act as a bridge to a sustainable future for the company in Scotland. During this period, training will also be offered by Scottish Enterprise.

“It is essential we protect the skilled manufacturing jobs we need to build our transition to a green industrial economy.”

At the heart of the celebrations is the brand-new Monsters and Myths Trail – a Halloween adventure curated and illustrated by Dynamic Earth’s own talented team. Visitors are invited to journey through immersive galleries and track down legendary creatures, both real and imagined. From Halloween favourites such as zombies, vampires and Frankenstein’s Monster to icons of Scottish folklore including selkies and the Loch Ness Monster, this self-guided trail reveals the fascinating science behind the stories.

This year’s landmark event promises a spectacular celebration featuring a vibrant parade through Edinburgh’s New Town, music, dance and cultural performances, the return of public fireworks displays to Princes Street Gardens at the Ross Bandstand, and much more.

Since 2015, Edinburgh Diwali has showcased the spirit of the Indian festival of lights and Scotland’s rich multicultural tapestry by bringing together communities to celebrate diversity. Started as an initiative by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh and Indian diaspora from the city, Edinburgh Diwali has gone on to become one of the UK’s most prominent public Diwali celebrations, attracting around 10,000 spectators to the parade and performances in Edinburgh’s city centre.

Last year’s celebrations lit up the city with incredible energy, featuring unforgettable performances covering classical to contemporary from across cultures from more than 200 performers, notably Scottish Regiment Band, the electrifying Edinburgh Bhangra Crew, dynamic dance troupes Bollyfeat and Dance Ihayami, and a headline performance from the sensational Kaykay & Co., the London based British Asian fusion band. This year’s 10th anniversary celebration promises to be even bigger, with details of the full programme to be revealed nearer the date.

This special milestone edition of Edinburgh Diwali will take place 13:00 – 19:00 on Sunday 2nd November 2025. The event is free to attend and open to all, encouraging people from across Edinburgh and the surrounding area to participate in this family-friendly festival of light.

Edinburgh young swimmers invited to make a splash with competition

Olympic and paralympic heroes judge design to cap ten years of swimming success

YOUNG swimmers in Edinburgh are being handed the unique chance to see their creativity celebrated by sporting royalty for Learn to Swim Month.

A new competition has been launched for children design a commemorative swim cap marking a decade of the trailblazing Learn to Swim programme.

The winning design will be announced live by Learn to Swim Ambassadors, Olympic medallist Duncan Scott and Paralympic champion Toni Shaw, during the official 10th Anniversary Celebration Event later this year.

Delivered in partnership by Scottish Water and Scottish Swimming, the Learn to Swim Framework has grown into one of Scotland’s most successful programmes – supporting more than 210,000 children and adults learn to swim and help them to become safer, more confident and competent in water.

Duncan Scott, the most decorated Scottish Olympian of all time, said: “The success of the Learn to Swim programme over the past decade has been phenomenal.

“We’ve reached hundreds of thousands of young people and are continuing to grow year after year. What I really love is just how inclusive it is, welcoming children of all ages, all backgrounds and abilities, and giving them the chance to thrive in and around the water.

“This competition is a brilliant way to celebrate everything that’s been achieved and gives one lucky youngster the chance to create a special memory and have their very own unique swimming cap.”

The competition runs throughout Learn to Swim Month this September, with entries welcomed via a dedicated form hosted online from those currently enrolled in the Learn to Swim programme.

A judging panel including representatives from Scottish Swimming and Scottish Water will select the winner.

The design brief asks children to show what swimming means to them – whether that’s fun, freedom, learning or adventure.

Paralympic medallist Toni Shaw, who has been a passionate ambassador for the initiative since 2021, added: “This is such a fun way to celebrate the past 10 years and really mark the occasion in style.

“To now see so many opportunities opening up for young people, especially those facing unique challenges, is special for me personally.

“This competition is a great way to shine a light on everything that’s been achieved – and I can’t wait to see the creative designs the children come up with.”

The young designer behind the chosen cap will receive a one-of-a-kind cap featuring their artwork, a goodie bag and the chance to see their cap design produced in limited numbers for use by learners at their own Learn to Swim provider.

The Learn to Swim programme is now delivered by 38 leisure trusts and aquatic providers in 167 pools across the country. It currently sees around 84,000 children and adults take part in swim lessons every week – with ambitions to reach a further 50,000 by 2028.

Peter Farrer, Chief Operating Officer at Scottish Water, said: “The 10-year milestone of the Learn to Swim programme represents an opportunity to celebrate all the great work that’s been done so far.

“We are proud to support the Learn to Swim programme and work with Scottish Swimming and all the leisure trusts and aquatic providers across the country to create ‘Generation Swim’, a generation of confident, safer and competent swimmers, who will also get to experience the wider health and social benefits that swimming can offer.

“Everyone should be able to enjoy Scotland’s miles of rivers, lochs, reservoirs and shorelines safely and with confidence – and the programme plays a vital role in teaching essential water safety skills, helping individuals stay safer in, on and around Scotland’s vast network of pools, rivers, lochs, reservoirs and shorelines.”

Since its inception, the Learn to Swim Framework has championed inclusive access to lessons, helping over 2,700 children with disabilities take part – with more than 80% now swimming in mainstream lessons.

John Lunn, Chief Executive at Scottish Swimming, said: “The 10th anniversary is a chance for us to reflect on just how far Learn to Swim has come – and the Celebration Event will be a fantastic way to recognise the people and partners who’ve made it all possible.

Aldi donates over 43,000 meals to local charities over summer

Aldi stores in Edinburgh and The Lothians donated over 43,000 meals to families in need throughout the recent summer holidays. 

All Edinburgh and Lothian stores aided local charities and foodbanks during the period of increased demand by redistributing surplus food through community giving platform Neighbourly.

The UK’s fourth largest supermarket has worked with Neighbourly since 2019 and has already donated more than 8.8 million meals so far this year to those in need nationwide.

Luke Emery, National Sustainability Director at Aldi UK, said: “We are proud to continue supporting incredible causes across the country this summer, helping to provide fresh, wholesome food to those who need it most.

“School holidays can be a challenging time for many families, and this summer we’re continuing our efforts to provide support where we can through our partnership with Neighbourly.”

Steve Butterworth, CEO of Neighbourly, added: “Summer holidays represent one of the busiest times of the year for charities and food banks, and this year was no different.

“Aldi’s generous donations played a key role in helping support families, and our partnership continues to make a meaningful difference to those who need it most.”

Britain’s fourth largest supermarket also works with Company Shop, the UK’s leading redistributor of surplus food and household products, to redistribute surplus food from its Regional Distribution Centres.
