A group of Edinburgh College Costume students are displaying their work in a new exhibition at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre which delves into pantomime costume throughout the ages.
The exhibition features garments created by students from the College’s HND Costume for Stage and Screen course and runs at Festival Theatre from 29 May to 8 June.
Part of Edinburgh College’s Glow Festival, a two –month festival which showcases the talents of the College’s Creative Industries students, the exhibition includes garments handcrafted by the students and designed by College lecturer Anya Glinski.
Visitors to the exhibition will be treated to a range of fairytale costumes taken from some of the most famous pantomime shows including the Evil Stepmother from ‘Sleeping Beauty’; Dragonara from ‘Mother Goose’ and Daughter Donut from ‘Babes in the Wood’.
As part of their course, students interpreted Anya’s designs and used the skills they developed during their time at College. The range of Skills include; pattern cutting, fitting the costumes on selected models and constructing costumes using industry-standard techniques and machines. The costumes focus on attention to period silhouette and theatrical applications.
All aspects of the costumes including structural shape, bodice and skirts, heads, headwear and accessories have been created by the students.
Costume for Stage and Screen student Kieren Barr said: “It has been an intense but fun project to work on – bringing Anya’s designs to life.
“Studying the features of pantomime costume through the years has been really interesting, I think many people underestimate how big a role costume plays in pantomime. I’m really proud of my finished look and I can’t wait for people to see it as part of the exhibition.”
Edinburgh College lecturer Liz McCafferty, who trained students throughout their project, said: “The students have done a fantastic job of interpreting Anya’s designs and creating costumes.
“They’ve all worked really hard, not only in producing the costumes but in researching and understanding the techniques required to finish the pieces off to the highest standard. I can’t wait to see the exhibition come together in the wonderful surroundings of the Festival Theatre.”
The exhibition is part of the Festival Theatre’s 25th Birthday celebrations, with the famous playhouse marking 25 years since its inception.
Pantomime Through the Ages is open daily from 10am – 6pm, from 29 May – 8 June at Festival Theatre, 13-29 Nicolson St, Edinburgh EH8 9FT and is free for all visitors.
