A group of Edinburgh College students are using their creative talents to open a portal to the past and bring one of Edinburgh’s top historical venues to life.
More than 100 of the College’s Dance, Music, Hospitality, Costume Design and Computing students will take inspiration from a royal banquet held at Riddles Court in 1598 for King James VI when they take part in an event at the same venue tomorrow (Wednesday).
The College’s Dance and Music students will perform a historical piece from the period of King James VI, while guests will also be able to explore the venue, and enjoy a variety of interactive experiences on an augmented reality app created by the College’s Computing students.
Hospitality students will provide refreshments and the all the costumes worn during the performances have been designed by the Costume Design students.
Edinburgh College Computing curriculum manager Sam Blyth said: “Our students have been working extremely hard over the last few months in preparation for this event and I can’t wait to see it all come to life on the day.
“This is the first time an event like this has taken place and it will give our students the perfect opportunity to showcase their wonderful talents in such a historic venue.”
The event is being held as part of Edinburgh College’s annual Glow Festival – a two-month festival showcasing the work of the College’s Creative Industries students at venues across the city.
Historic Environment Scotland world heritage manager Rosalind Campbell said: “Over the last year, Historic Environment Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council have engaged with over 100 students from the Creative Industries faculty of Edinburgh College.
“Watching the minds of the future draw inspiration from Edinburgh’s past and engage with their local heritage has been a fantastic experience for all involved”.
Moreover, the event is being held in partnership with Historic Environment Scotland and Riddles Court and is inspired by last year’s Year of the Young People. Riddle’s Court is a sixteenth century house recently restored and opened as the Patrick Geddes Learning Centre.
Tickets for the performance are free. Performances will take place at 3.30pm and 5.30pm.
