A man has been convicted for the rape of a woman at a flat in Portobello.
At Edinburgh High Court yesterday, Albert Caballero pled guilty to the attack on a woman in her twenties at his home in Windsor Place on 27 December 2018.
The woman attended Caballero’s flat in her role as a support worker, when he started making inappropriate comments.
On trying to leave, the victim found that the now 46-year-old had locked the door. He then told her that he was going to rape her before pinning her to the ground.
She punched him to the face but was forced into the bedroom, where she was attacked.
On finally being able to leave the property, the victim contacted a colleague and then made her way to Leith Police Station to report the incident.
A short time after the incident, Caballero went to Portobello Police Station and used the phone outside to call police and admit to his actions.
Detective Inspector Jonny Wright of Edinburgh’s Public Protection Unit said: “This was an absolutely terrifying ordeal for the woman, who entered Caballero’s flat with the intention of trying to help him.
“This is a horrendous attack under any circumstances, but that it took place during the course of the victim’s work makes it even more shocking.
“I wish to commend the victim for her courage and strength throughout the investigation.
“We welcome this conviction and want to reassure the public that we are committed to working with our partners to fully support victims, while ensuring people like Caballero are brought to justice.”
He is due to be sentenced on 26th June.
