Dancing in the streets of Drylaw as road re-opens … but D Mains braced for traffic misery

They were dancing in the streets of Drylaw at the weekend when the SGN maintenance programme came to an end at last and Groathill Road North fully reopened.

For one local woman, it was reminiscent of the Berlin Wall coming down, with friends and families reunited after years of painful separation (well, weeks then).

The tearful Easter Drylaw resident said: “Since the barriers went up it’s been almost impossible to meet my friend who lives over in Wester Drylaw. All the clutter was removed on Friday and I can meet my friend again at last. It’s been so long, I just hope I remember what she looks like!”

She added: “I spoke to her on the phone and we thought about organising a street party. However that would have meant closing some roads and that may not have gone down too well!”

You do get used to traffic disruption, however, and fans of diversions and three-way temporary traffic lights should not despair: there’s plenty more to keep you fuming over the coming weeks.

Ongoing work on Crewe Road South will ensure that road will remain a frustration for weeks to come and there’s another major headache ahead: major utility works start on Queensferry Road and Quality Street in Davidson’s Mains next Monday (18th June).

Works by Scottish Power and will see the closure of Quality Street northbound for two weeks with temporary traffic lights on Main Street / Corbiehill Road to aide the flow of diverted traffic. Queensferry Road will also be reduced to one lane for four weeks while the work is carried out.

Can hardly wait …
