Trinity walkabout this weekend

TRINITY WALKABOUT

SATURDAY 23 APRIL

MEET AT KING EDWARD VII STATUE, NEWHAVEN ENTRANCE TO VICTORIA PARK at 10AM

trinity walkabout

Each year Trinity Community Council organises a short walkabout around part of Trinity, together with Edinburgh Council officials, to note problems and ensure action is taken.

This year we are focusing on Victoria Park following the setting up of the Friends of Victoria Park Group, part of the Dudleys and the pathway from Newhaven Road to Trinity Academy.

Everyone is welcome to come along, particularly if there are issues you want to draw to our attention. You can join us at the start or along the way. We will finish around noon.

Trinity: it all kicks off in March!

Seems like it all kicks off in March!

Here’s your March Newsletter which includes news of quite a few local events – and there’s still time to catch Art in Granton at Madelvic House today.  (See poster, below).

Trinity CC met on 14 March. Here’s a summary of the main points:

CRIME

While EH5 (Granton/Pilton/Trinity) remains one of the worst affected postcodes Police Scotland assure us that housebreakings are down more than a third compared to last year but it still hurts if you are the victim.

Aside from all the individual security measures we can help each other simply by keeping an eye open on what is happening in our street. So let’s look out for each other. And you may want to make it easier for your neighbour to look out for you. That hedge that screens your property is also a useful hiding place. Have you got the balance right between security and privacy?

And for those living in Craighall Gardens and Terrace, Police Scotland are providing a Neighbourhood Watch security briefing at 7.30 on 21 March at Trinity Academy. Rumour has it that it’s a big room so even if you don’t live in the Gardens or Terrace you may be able to slip in quietly to pick up a few tips!

DOG FOULING

This seems to be on the rise in Trinity. There are various theories about why this might be, but at the end of the day, if you own a dog or are in charge of taking dogs for a walk, you have a legal duty to clear up any mess because of the health hazard it represents. And if you are one of the 99% of well behaved dog walkers and witness someone failing to clear up, you may wish to challenge them.

TRINITY’s PARKS

Friends of Victoria Park was formally inaugurated on 17 March when some really interesting ideas for the future of the park were discussed. To take these forward, the following were elected:

Chair – Antonia Boyce
Vice Chair – Tim Parker
Secretary – Aileen Ward
Treasurer – Ian Forbes
Other Committee Members – Lynne Lineen and Kevin O’Donnell

FoVP would love to hear from anyone else who would like to become involved, or even join the Committee – especially if they are interested in communications and social media. A membership form is attached. Or get in touch by email on friendsofvp@gmail.com

Friends of Victoria Park Membership Form 2

And on a seasonal note Friends of Starbank Park are holding their annual Easter Egg Hunt for 3 – 8 year olds at 10.30 in Starbank Park on Good Friday 25th March. If the thought of your child working off their energies searching for calories simply to replace them works for you (and who wouldn’t it work for?) then get along there!

All money raised is going to the Hans Christian Andersen themed Children’s Nature Trail to be constructed amongst the trees.

MORE GREEN STUFF

Spring always raises the spirits. Buds pop, shoots shoot and bushes grow. But it has complications. Overhanging trees and hedges can obstruct pavements and are a particular problem for the visually impaired members of our community. They can also attract a fine from CEC. So break out the secateurs and keep on top of the shrubbery.

OCEAN TERMINAL HOTEL

You will doubtless know of Ocean Terminal’s ambitious plan for a bold hotel design to abut the north east corner of Ocean Terminal itself. We heard from the architects that the widely published visualisations were rather misleading as they simply show the maximum volume which the structure could occupy.

In fact, the design will likely be a narrow fin which will nonetheless reach 28 storeys and link to a boardwalk running around the west side of Ocean Terminal while connecting to a future dockside walkway beside the Albert Dock.

We had a productive dialogue with suggestions for direct access to the Terminal and rooftop landscaping for the existing building to add to the conceptual design for conference facilities and 28th floor viewing platform.

Trinity CC is supportive in principle of a landmark development which will reinforce the critical mass which a retail centre of the scale of Ocean Terminal’s needs. However, we cannot give unqualified endorsement and reserve our position until a more detailed design is available and, in particular, a full visual impact assessment has been undertaken. We expect to hear more on that by the end of April.

SAINSBURY CRAIGHALL ROAD

Work has started on the site and should complete in the summer. The store is expected to open in November

ANNUAL WALKABOUT

Final planning for the 2016 Trinity CC Walkabout now in hand. Expect this to happen on the morning of 23 April and, to celebrate the establishment of its Friends Group, we plan to tour Victoria Park and its immediate environs. Any thoughts? Get in touch!

More on Facebook or TCC website or at our next meeting on Monday 11 April at 7 pm in Wardie Parish Church, Primrose Bank Road. Open to all. Come and give us your opinions. Or contact a Community Councillor. We need to know your views so that we can represent them!

Trinity Community Council – January Update

Trinity CC met on 11 January. Here are the main points:

Ed sculture workshop

Goodwill to all men?

Happily criminal activity was subdued over the Festive period. But for the unlucky few, and there were some, a housebreaking is still traumatic. Thieves now seem to be targeting houses with sash and casement windows i.e. much of Trinity! So take care to secure tools like spades which might be used to lever open sash windows. And remember all those other security messages about locks, burglar alarms, keeping car keys out of sight etc. Jewellery seems to be the current target.

Clean, Green, Safe & Engaged Report

This quarterly report from Forth Neighbourhood Partnership sets out how well local services are being delivered and our environment maintained.
Unsurprisingly, Trinity’s parks shine brightly in these statistics and, despite a couple of recent headlines, we can claim to be rather a safe place to live with reasonable levels of community engagement.

Street cleanliness was generally close to target but we are pursuing CEC for clarification on its policy for clearing leaves. This appears to happen in a rather random fashion and, if not cleared e.g. Clark Road, Craighall Rd, Denham Green Pl, the new tennis courts, cycle path, South Trinity Rd, leaves have quickly succumbed to recent weather and deteriorated into a slippy, slimy mess.

But overall it was clear that the issue of greatest concern to residents was rubbish and recycling and the new recycling arrangements in particular. This is crystal clear from the level of complaints with the most recent figures being more than three times the target level – a substantial rise on the previous month. While this appears to be starting to settle down there are still problems with bins not being emptied on the scheduled day. Big green bins are seen as a bit of a problem for the elderly.

Victoria Park – Gourmet Destination?

CEC is tendering for food outlets at several sites including a mobile unit in Victoria Park. We have not been consulted but believe it is to some extent a response to the recurring suggestion of using either the Bowl House or the Pump house as a café. We are informally advised that as/when any bid is received, we will have an opportunity to feed in comments and concerns.

We will monitor developments closely to ensure that the promised consultation is delivered and we hope that by then that Friends of Victoria Park is up and running and will be able to comment in its own right. Concerns include increased litter and sale of burgers and fizzy drinks to school children but overall, the proposal seems to have general support as, among other things, it would provide a focus for people to meet up for coffee etc.

Do you have a view? Write and let us know – or grab a word with your local community councillor.

Fringe Benefits 1: Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop

The final phase of Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop’s new building opened in March 2015, marking completion of a world class arts facility right on our doorstep in Hawthornvale (pictured, top). As well as 26 artist studios it has specially equipped workshops to enable artists and organisations to test ideas and develop projects. Across the building, indoor and outdoor spaces support a range of different sculptural activities and provide viewing areas to enable visitors to see work in progress.

Want to know more? You can join a contemporary sculpture course or just drop by to see what free exhibitions and talks are on. Maybe just relax in the new café, accessible directly from the cycle path or Hawthornvale and open seven days a week? Tours of the building can be arranged for groups or individuals by phoning 0131 551 4490.

Fringe Benefits 2: Ocean Terminal

Ocean Terminal Ltd has plans for a major hotel development. At present we only know the outline. If, like us, you’d like to know more, there will be a public exhibition of the proposals on 10 February at Ocean Terminal Community Room, First Floor besides Debenhams, 3.30 to 7.30pm.

Street Lighting

Regular readers can’t fail to have noticed the repeated concerns about the effectiveness of the new street lighting in some, particularly wider, streets. Some problem sites, but not all, have been picked up. The CEC replacement programme is now moving to its next phase and we are asking for clarification of what this means and how the earlier problems will be tackled in this new phase.

Neighbourhood Environment Fund

It’s that time of year again where we put forward ideas bidding for funds to invest in our local environment. Current candidates include the Vennel to the north of Trinity Academy, Trinity Road Tunnel and Wardie Bay Foreshore. Have you got any ideas? Also time to start planning our annual Walkabout. Is there a particular part of Trinity which needs to be looked over? Do let us know if you think there’s something we should be looking at.

Goldenacre Planters

As 2016 begins, discussions continue concerning funding of planters outside the old RBS Goldenacre branch. We live in hope!

Much more at our next meeting on Monday 8 February at 7 pm in Wardie Parish Church, Primrose Bank Road. Open to all. Come along and give us your thoughts, or contact a Community Councillor – we need to know your views so that we can represent them!

Aim: to set up a Friends Group for Victoria Park

Victoria Park is a fine park – it could be great with an active Friends Group.

• directly involve the community in park events and changes
• increase access to funding – crucial during Council cuts
• make parks better

There are almost 50 friends of park groups in Edinburgh. Each is dedicated to improving their Park and increasing community involvement.

So long, summer – hello, Halloween! News from Trinity

TCC resumed its meetings on 14 September – Summer is officially over! But as (admittedly meagre) compensation, here’s the September newsletter!

And remember, we would really like to have your feedback on what’s good around Trinity, what’s not so good and what could be better. How else can we represent your views? Look forward to hearing from you!

Trinity CC September Bulletin

TRINITY COMMUNITY COUNCIL – SEPTEMBER UPDATE

Twenty five people came along to TCC’s first meeting after the summer break. Here are the main points …

Police Report

No representative available but a written report was received:

  • Enquiries are in hand concerning recent housebreaking reports including incidents in Larkfield Gardens.
  • Several people have been charged with break-ins in Forth. Some are in custody whilst others are on bail curfews.
  • Three addresses in north Edinburgh searched for stolen property to try to identify perpetrators and return property.
  • Overall domestic housebreakings in Forth are down 2% over the same period in 2014 (which was lower than 2013).
  • Detection rates are also increasing with more culprits being taken to court.
  • Additional Police resource has been deployed City-wide.

We can do a lot ourselves using security measures such as alarms, locks, lighting etc. Crime prevention advice or a personal visit with more specialist advice can be arranged through the local Forth Community Policing Team.

Waterfront Developments

Cllr Hinds provided a map showing the ownership pattern for the development area following our concerns about piecemeal development and potential impact on Trinity residents. We will be discussing this with Granton CC. The Second Regeneration Conference has been scheduled for 2.30pm on 30 September at Royston/Wardieburn Community Centre. All are welcome to attend.

Traffic Issues

Feedback about East Trinity Rd suggests that the improved Lower Granton/Trinity Rd junction has improved matters and that no further measures are needed meantime. The knock-on impact to the west end of Lower Granton Rd will continue to be monitored with the 20mph limit expected to be very helpful in the first instance. An application for a pedestrian crossing on Craighall Rd has been assessed and turned down and we are seeking further information on the reasons for that.
CEC officials have advised that nothing is scheduled to review the North Edinburgh Transport Strategy. Cllr Hinds has undertaken to review that position with them in light of previous assurances.

South East Scotland City Region Plan (SESPLAN) Major Issues Report (MIR)

This is the VERY IMPORTANT first stage of a new 20 year strategic plan for 1.5m people living in Edinburgh, Lothians, Borders and southern Fife. It is a consultation document and open for comment until 30 September. You can make your thoughts known at

http://sesplan-consult.objective.co.uk/portal/mir/mir

Alternatively pass them on through TCC as we will be making a representation. Or do both!

Other Planning Matters

Application to trade vehicles from 144 Newhaven Rd resubmitted. We have repeated our previous objections and trust that CEC will maintain the firm stance it took last time.
No further movement regarding 127 Trinity Rd or Sainsbury.

Reduction in Local Banking Services

Following RBS Goldenacre closing its doors on 13 August, Bank of Scotland has now advised a reduction in its opening hours. This is disappointing news for local customers and businesses.

Your Parks Need YOU!trinity halloweenKeep Scotland Beautiful has awarded a Green Flag to Starbank Park recognising the magnificent efforts of the Friends and CEC staff in restoring the park to its place as a jewel in Trinity’s crown. So now both Trinity’s parks have a Green Flag. Celebrate by coming along to see for yourself. Party on Halloween! (see above)

And on the Glorious Twelfth, Victoria Park’s renewed basketball and tennis courts were formally opened by Cllrs Lesley Hinds and Richard Lewis together with Jamie Hepburn, Minister for Sport. Our parks are really going from strength to strength!

To get the best use of the courts, discussions are in hand about booking but we must ensure these and other amenities stay high grade. We are therefore looking for people to join a Friends of Victoria Park group.

Email tcc-comms@outlook.com if that’s you!

Other Improvement Matters with CEC

Bins installed at Trinity Academy Vennel. Surface improvements under discussion.
 Enforcement of yellow lines at Boswall Rd to be pursued.
 Ownership of Lower Granton Rd foreshore being clarified.
 Denham Green lighting to be investigated.

Clean, Green, Safe & Engaged?

This report from Forth Neighbourhood Partnership compared us against the rest of Edinburgh. Measures cover North: i.e. Forth + Inverleith unless stated. The good, the bad (+ some ugly!):

  • Street Cleanliness (Trinity): Well above target. Some litter on Granton Road.
  • Refuse Collection Complaints: Roughly double target (in common with rest of Edinburgh)
  • Park Quality: 100% achieved across all North¡¦s 5 parks!
  • Safety: Anti-social behaviour orders are low for the size of our population but a disturbing number go unresolved and we suffer a lot of repeat ASB¡¦s.
  • Satisfying Place to Live (Forth): Third worst in Edinburgh.
  • Community Engagement (Forth): Best ward in Edinburgh.

Come along and give your thoughts to our next meeting on

Monday 12 October at 7 pm

in Wardie Parish Church, Primrose Bank Road.

We need to know what you think!
