It’s never too early to get your child active for life by starting them young – and now’s the perfect time to unlock your kid’s sporting potential with Edinburgh Leisure’s ‘Come and Try Week’ coaching taster sessions, running from 29April – 4 May.
For 3-5 years let your child release their inner Pavel Karnejenko and Lottie Smith and help them develop motor skills, balance, and agility with the gymnastics tasters. And for those that have been inspired by the likes of Paralympian swimmer Scott Quin, who is also a swim coach at Edinburgh Leisure, there are swimming taster sessions. There will also be multi-sport, and basketball taster classes on offer too.
For Primary 1s – 7s, there’s basketball and athletics, where kids can show their athletic prowess in running, jumping, and throwing.
Each taster session last from 30-60 minutes and booking online is essential. With multiple sports across multiple venues across the city, there is something for all the family wherever they are at or on the map. From £3.00 a class, this is the perfect opportunity to try something new. Spaces are limited and subject to availability.
As the biggest provider of sports coaching facilities across Edinburgh, led by qualified and experienced coaches in a fun environment, Edinburgh Leisure’s coaching programme will help your child develop new skills, improve their agility, and grow confidence.
“Hold on to your seats because it gets really, really weird!”
Those are the opening words of Judith, the u3a’s laughter yoga expert at one of her exhilarating online classes. Laughter Yoga is just one of the exciting subjects that u3a members can take part in when they join.
u3a is for those who no longer work full time and have the desire to learn new things, have fun and make new friends.
From 16th to 24th of September groups across the UK will showcase the exciting activities during u3a Week with taster sessions and online talks from high-profile guests, including positive ageing influencer Carl Honore, to give potential new members a taste of the enjoyment that can be had from joining u3a.
Judith lives in Edinburgh but runs an online laughter yoga group where members can take part from the comfort of their own homes. It’s open to anyone who joins u3a and would like to put a spring in their step and start the day with a burst of positivity.
The group has been running for 11 years and is going from strength-to-strength. Judith says: “Laughter is the best medicine. It’s not about ridicule, it’s playful, uncomplicated, joyful laughter.
“It is a safe space where we can laugh without inhibitions for as long as we like.
“We laugh every day for about 10-15 minutes, and it encourages a positive outlook and helps you deal with the stress and challenges of life.
“When we laugh the body sends messages to the brain which releases endorphins, and we feel wonderful without even trying. It sends out happy hormones which make you feel good all day.”
Laughter yoga is just one of the many hundreds of interest groups whose members across the UK that are gearing up for all sorts of events to let communities know what their u3as have on offer during u3a Week.
There will be concerts, alfresco wine tasting, market stalls and picnic plus much more.
With our divers ramping up their preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Edinburgh Leisure is on the hunt for the next generation of divers.
For those who have been inspired by divers such as James Heatly, Grace Reid, Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix (daughter of Fred!), Tom Daley and Matty Lee, Edinburgh Leisure is offering the opportunity for children to come and try diving with their Performance Diving Coaches at the Royal Commonwealth Pool to see if they have a talent for the sport.
Children should be between 5 and 16 years old, able to swim 10 metres unaided, confident in deep water and submerge in water without googles.
No experience in necessary as they will be learning basic skills but those interested in gymnastics, trampolining, acrobatics or similar sports might enjoy this opportunity to try a new sport.
Priced at just £3, the diving taster sessions at the Royal Commonwealth Pool are offered on: Monday 31 July – Friday 4 August at 16:00 – 16:25.
Edinburgh Leisure offers a world class diving programme at their diving pool at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, complete with a dedicated Dry Dive Area with trampolines and harnesses, which enables more experienced divers to practice the twists and turns before trying them out on the boards.
Their diving programme follows the National Diving Award Scheme right through to competitive level.
Athletes training at the Royal Commonwealth Pool include local Edinburgh boy, James Heatly (GB) and Yona Knight-Wisdom (Jamaica). Grace Reid, who grew up in the capital, previously trained at the Commie.
The main purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for local people to access information about services which will be able to offer advice and support during the difficult months ahead.
We’re also having a community lunch on the day.
We are hoping to be able to open up the cafe area and increase the days that we are doing the community lunch and the pantry.
