Edinburgh’s roller girls on the hunt for new home
Auld Reekie Roller Girls (ARRG), Edinburgh’s Roller Derby club, are to host a national tournament in the city on Saturday 25th November. ARRGmageddon 2017, to be held at Meadowbank Sports Centre, will see ARRG’s third travel team, the All Star Rookies, battle it out with teams from Livingston, York and Durham. An apprenticeship programme designed to empower young people who have a disability to have a voice in shaping sporting activity in Scotland receives £49,985 of Young Start funding being awarded today. Disability Sport (SDS) is one of five groups sharing in £206,196 of funding from the Big Lottery Fund’s Young Start programme, thanks to dormant bank and buildings account money. A £300,000 fund to encourage more women and girls to get involved in sport has been awarded to 14 projects on Active Girls Day by Sports Minister Aileen Campbell. From wheelchair basketball in Glasgow, judo in Fife and bikepacking adventures in the Highlands, the projects will tackle the barriers that lead to historically lower levels of physical activity among girls than boys.
