Thomas meets SAS staff who saved his life after crash

A youngster who suffered serious injuries after being trapped in a vehicle after a serious crash has been reunited with the SAS responders who helped him.

Thomas Bell, of Edinburgh, aged 12, was involved in the incident on May 8, which left him with serious injuries.

His dad, Grahame and Charlie, aged 10 at the time, were also in the vehicle.

The incident involved multiple SAS assets, including East SORT and EMRS West.

Thomas visited the Scottish Ambulance Service’s ScotSTAR base to meet up with some of the staff who assisted him, including Dr Tim Parke and Dr Jon McCormack.

Mum Orla said: “It was a very exciting day for the boys and an emotional one for my husband and I. Thomas spent more than 4 months in hospital, undergoing multiple complex surgeries.

“All of the emergency services helped save our son’s life and the NHS doctors and nurses gave him his future back. As parents, we simply could not have asked for better care, empathy and expertise. We will be forever grateful to all of the people involved and I will never stop saying thank you to you all.”

Dr Tim Parke, an emergency doctor who was on duty at the EMRS base in Glasgow, said: “Throughout the entire incident, Thomas remained completely calm and controlled. This was extraordinary considering the trauma of the accident and the injuries sustained.

“It was an honour to have played a small part in that journey.”

Police appeal for information following Davidson Mains attack

POLICE are appealing for information following the attempted murder of a man in Davidson Mains. the incident happened on Main Street around 12.05am early this morning (Friday, 21 April, 2023).

The victim, a 20-year-old man, had been n a pub on Main Street and left the premises at around midnight. Soon after exiting the building, three men, dressed in dark coloured clothing and balaclavas, attacked the man with a weapon.

The victim was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh by ambulance with serious injuries.

The suspects are believed to have left the area in a red saloon-type vehicle.

Detective Inspector Kevin Tait said: “We are appealing for anyone who witnessed or has information on the incident to get in touch.

“I’d particularly ask anyone who was within the pub on Main Street yesterday evening (Thursday 20 April) to come forward to help our enquiries.

“Equally anyone who may have seen a red saloon car in the Davidson Mains, or surrounding areas, or has information on this vehicle and its occupants, should contact officers as soon as possible.

“We are assessing available CCTV footage and anyone who may have dashcam of the incident, or vehicle, should provide this at your earliest opportunity.”

Police appeal after woman seriously injured in Greenside Place robbery

Detectives are appealing for information following a robbery and assault in Edinburgh.

In the early hours of Tuesday, 5 July, 2022, a 25-year-old woman was pushed from behind down the stairs and had her bag stolen near Greenside Place, between Omni Centre and Edinburgh Playhouse.

The woman sustained serious injuries and attended at the Royal infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment.

Detective Constable Kieran Keddie, of Gayfield CID, said: “The victim sustained serious injuries as a result of the incident and our enquiries are ongoing.

“We believe that members of the public helped the woman following the incident and we would urge those that assisted to contact officers as soon as possible.

“Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information that can assist with our investigation should contact Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 1508 of 6 July.

“Alternatively, a call can be made anonymously to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Appeal following hit and run involving a cyclist and van on Old Dalkeith Road

Road Policing officers in Edinburgh are appealing for information following a hit-and-run crash on Old Dalkeith Road.

The incident took place at the junction with Walter Scott Road, around 11.35am yesterday (Saturday, 28 May, 2022). It involved a cyclist and a van, which did not stop at the scene.

The cyclist, a 39-year-old woman, was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment for serious injuries. 

Enquiries to trace the vehicle, which is believed to a small white van or similar, are ongoing and officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.   

Constable Gary Barkham, from Edinburgh Road Policing, said: “We are asking for anyone who was in the area around the time of the crash, or anyone with information on the vehicle involved, to please get in touch. Any information could prove useful to our investigation.
