Active Kids time again
It’s that time of year again when Sainsburys Blackhall are launching our active kids vouchers (writes Gail Wilson).
This year we launched our Active Kids campaign at the Scottish parliament. Our store manager George Paton, Customer Service Manager Louisa Higgins and I had the great pleasure of meeting paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds, along with a group of children from Blackhall Primary school.
The children had a great time and showed that being active can be fun as they all bounced around on space hoppers they were given!
Make sure you collect your vouchers in store now as you shop!

Sainsbury’s Christmas Story competition
Your story could be seen in the Museum of Childhood!
Sainsburys are running a Christmas story competition, open to all Edinburgh schoolchildren. We would love as many children as possible to take part!
The story must be no more than 500 words telling us your “Christmas Memories”.
The competition closes on Friday 18 December and all entries can be submitted to any Sainsburys in Edinburgh.
The competition will be judged by a colleague from Sainsburys and a representative from the City of Edinburgh council. The winning entries will then be displayed in the Museum of Childhood.
Remember to include your name, age and address or telephone number. Good luck!

Sainsbury’s in Edinburgh trials cooking oil recycling banks
Sainsbury’s stores across Edinburgh are trialling recycling banks for cooking oils. The trail launched on 20 May with the aim to encourage customers to recycle, whilst also saving their kitchen sink from blockages often caused when oils are poured down the drain.
In partnership with Olleco, Scottish Water and Zero Waste Scotland, customers can simply deposit household cooking waste including vegetable oil, animal fat and lard in a plastic bottle at the recycling banks located in Sainsbury’s car parks. From there the oils are collected by Olleco and taken to their recycling plant to be made into biodiesel.
Paul Crewe, Head of Sustainability at Sainsbury’s, said: “Cooking oils probably aren’t the first thing you’d think of recycling however it’s a great way of keeping your drains clear and putting waste to a good use. This is an exciting trial that adds to the recycling our customers already get involved in, including clothing, and even Christmas cards! The recycling banks are really easy to use so we hope customers across Edinburgh and the surrounding area get involved in the trial.”
The trial has been welcomed by Scottish Water, as this links to their Cycle campaign which aims to highlight simple steps to prevent blocked pipes.
Active Kids is back at Sainsbury’s
Active Kids is back at Sainsburys Blackhall. Customers can collect vouchers in store from 28 January – 5 May to help registered schools, groups and clubs across Edinburgh receive active and cooking equipment and experiences.
The scheme, which is celebrating its 10th birthday, is supported by double Paralympic gold medal-winner Ellie Simmons, world record breaking sprinter Jonnie Peacock and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.
Active Kids is designed to inspire and enable children to take more exercise and to eat healthily. Launched in 2005, the voucher collection scheme is open to all nursery, primary and secondary schools, as well as Scouts, Girlguiding groups and sports clubs in the UK.
Since it launched, over £150 million worth of equipment and experiences have been donated to registered schools, clubs and organisations.
The programme continues to evolve and reflect changes to the curriculum, with developments such as additional cooking equipment and toolkits introduced to support this new emphasis in the classroom.

Plant centenary trees with Sainsburys
This year Sainsburys are the National partner with the Woodland Trust. As part of this, a centenary wood is being created in Edinburgh – at Dreghorn Wood (just off the city Bypass), one of four sites in the UK.
To mark the 100th Anniversary of the First World War, Sainsburys Blackhall are inviting customers and colleagues along for a family fun day on Saturday 8 November at Dreghorn Woods to plant a tree with us and create a living, growing tribute to mark the centenary.
