Can the Timebank Temptations be The People’s Choice?
North Edinburgh’s Timebank Temptations choir has been shortlisted for a Voluntary Arts EPIC Award. Voting opens on Monday for the UK and Ireland’s largest amateur cultural award.
Run by Voluntary Arts, the Epic Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation in the amateur cultural sector. Last year’s Epic Award winners included a drumming group who came together for the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, an arts festival in a remote Scottish village, an Irish poetry group that held sessions in their local park and a Welsh knitting project that brought their entire community together – from farmers to ferrymen.
Across the UK and Republic of Ireland over 60,000 voluntary arts groups provide regular opportunities for cultural engagement in their local areas and the Epic Awards shine a spotlight on their achievements. All voluntary-led arts groups were eligible to apply, and entries this year were encouraged from:
The Timebank Temptations certainly tick a box or two – and now they need your support.
From Monday 20 April you can visit www.epicawards.co.uk and vote for Timebank Temptations as the People’s Choice!
Coming soon – the Community Leadership College!
Groundwork is now underway to establish a new Community Leadership College in North Edinburgh. The initiative will build on the skills of local residents and will be designed by the community itself.
Total Craigroyston works in partnership with others to strengthen services across Pilton and Muirhouse; strengthening support for families and building on the strength of the community.
The organisation, with partners Circle Scotland and Muirhouse Link Up, recently secured funding from the STV Foundation to develop a Community Leadership College.
What’s a community college?
“Many local people have become involved in community activities and volunteering through Link Up, The North Edinburgh Time Bank and many other community projects,” explained Total Craigroyston manager Christine Mackay. “The Community Leadership College will give us the opportunity to take that involvement to the next level by providing training, support and other types of activities so that more leaders are created within the community. The development of the college will be directed by local residents themselves, initially through a series of ‘Conversation Cafes’, so that we can gather their ideas and develop the programme.”
The College will be led by the community, ensuring that local needs and aspirations are central to the college’s development.
Over the coming weeks a series of ‘community conversation cafe’ events on the subject of community leadership will be held across the area.
It’s hoped that these informal sessions will attract the widest possible range of local residents of all ages, and the ideas and suggestions generated at the conversation cafes will then be used to develop the community leadership college plan.
Look out for more information coming soon – and get involved! Be part of shaping your community!
Four local mums have written and produced a delightful wee book of short stories to read with their children.
Chloe Wilson, Heather Thorburn, Michelle Lawler and Georgie Cassidy, members of Stepping Stones creative writing group, worked with tutor Lucy Ribchester over eight weekly sessions at Royston Wardieburn Community Centre to produce ‘Toy Stories’ – and they’ve produced a mini-masterpiece!
The book is beautifully illustrated by North Edinburgh Time Bank member Evren Dogan, who volunteered her talents for free to support the group project.
The Creative Writing group saw their finished work at Royston Wardieburn yesterday, where they were also presented with achievement certificates by Royston Wardieburn Community Learning & Development worker Karen Riddell.
Karen said: “This has been a really interesting collaborative project and we’ve all been looking forward to seeing the finished result. Toy Tales looks really good and the women should feel very proud of their achievement. I’m sure they will enjoy reading stories they have written themselves with their children. We’d like to thank Lucy and Evren for their efforts, too – the book looks so good!”
Lucy’s own first book ‘The Hourglass Factory’ is published in January – good luck with that, Lucy!

Timebank poster september meeting
North Edinburgh’s Time Bankers are meeting at 7pm on Monday (2 September) in Royston Wardieburn Community Centre on Pilton Drive North. All welcome.
Do’t know what a time bank is? See the poster or go along to the meeting to find out more – you might just be amazed at what you have to offer!
In another first for North Edinburgh, North Edinburgh Time Bank will be holding a Time Swap event at North Edinburgh Arts on Tuesday 26 February from 1 – 3pm. Time Bank Broker Julie Smith explains what it’s all about:
‘If you can spend a bit of time now and then helping someone in the community, you can earn a time credit. You can exchange that for help you need, or you can donate it to someone else who needs it.
If you’re quite handy, if you can help with housework, get shopping when someone’s not well, have a cup of tea and a chat with someone, give them a lift, teach a new skill like knitting or photography – or you want to learn how to work that new camera, or you need a hand painting, or fixing something – drop in.
Would you like to join a knitting group? Photography group? Singing? Timebank is a way of getting together and sharing interests and skills. Do you have something else you’d like to do? Tell other people and they can join in!
Times are tough and we all need somebody to lean on. Timebank is a way of meeting other people in your neighbourhood and helping each other when we need it. Phone me on 07807 002 591 if you need more info. Otherwise, see you on the 26th!’

The timebank singers, now called North Edinburgh Sings Together, want to recruit more members.
We meet Thursday mornings, 10-12 at North Edinburgh Arts. Everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a great singer. It’s a relaxed informal way to enjoy singing, and we positively welcome new people dropping in. You don’t have to make any commitment, come along any Thursday when you can. We’re also keen that speakers of other languages get involved as we would like to learn songs from around the world.
We are also looking for a pianist to accompany the group on Thursday mornings. We can pay them for their time! So any local musician with time on a Thursday morning, let us know!
