Party Season Hair

How To Get The Look

The festive season is the perfect time to get glam. Forget your favourite loungewear and try something new. Maybe a red lip or a brand new hairstyle. Unlike last year, we are able to go ‘out out’ this Christmas and New Year.

Local salon owner at SESH Hairdressing SIMON HILL has put together some styles you can create at home for the festivities:

Cool Girl Texture –

This style is perfect if you like an understated style that still looks cool and pairs perfectly with a sparkly, show stopping outfit.

The key to this look is in the products you use. Use your straightening iron to add as much or as little texture as you like. Slightly bend the hair between the irons in alternating directions to create a subtle shape.

Finish with a texturising hairspray and use your fingers to manipulate the shape and style of your hair. The key to this look is not to be too ‘perfected’ so embrace that slightly undone look.

Product recommendation – Wella EIMI Sugar Lift

Top Knot –

Not just a style reserved for the day before hair wash, but a style that can elevate any Christmas party outfit.

To give this look a polished edge to make it party friendly, spend time smoothing your hair into a ponytail before creating the bun. Use your hair brush to smooth your hair towards the bobble to remove any unwanted lumps.

Take the length of your ponytail and wrap around your hair tie before securing with hair grips. Finish with strong hold hairspray to withstand Scottish winter weather.

Product recommendation – Wella Luxe Oil.

Sleek and Sophisticated –

Bang on trend at the moment is this slick back, sophisticated style. Give this look an update for the festive season with a deep side parting like we have done here.

Use a lightweight hair gel or pomade to remove unwanted texture and smooth your hair back towards the nape of your neck. If you have short hair, try leaving it down, smoothed behind your ears. If your hair is longer, try tying it into a low bun or a sleek ponytail.

Product recommendation – Eleven Australia Dry Shampoo Volume Paste

Vava Volume –

This style embodies Christmas time and is sure to turn heads on NYE.

Use your hairdryer to add lots of volume to your hair before your begin styling. Depending on the look you want, you can add a soft wave through your hair once dry. Take the top section of your hair and create that volume at the front to give an air of drama to your style.

Use a back comb to create this and apply dry shampoo to the roots of your hair to give it more grip and hold. Secure with hair grips towards the crown of your head before using your fingers to gently pull out loose strands. This look is guaranteed to take your Christmas night out outfit to the next level.

Product recommendation – Eleven Australia Dry Finish Wax Spray.

Edinburgh ignites the official countdown to the St James Quarter opening

Edinburgh’s skyline was filled with an array of dazzling light last night as an incredible illumination marked one week to go until St James Quarter officially opens its doors.

You can view the highlights of the lightshow here

The countdown is on for St James Quarter’s’ much-anticipated phase one opening, and the new fashion district was officially welcomed to the city by some of the capital’s most famous landmarks. From the Balmoral and Edinburgh Castle to Forth Ports and the EICC, all roads led to St James Quarter as the whole of the night sky was illuminated- a symbol of this new city centre integration.

With its prime location in the heart of Edinburgh, St James Quarter is set to become a welcoming, cultural and lifestyle hub for art, culture, and fashion.

Through long-term partnerships with Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh Jazz & Blues and the Edinburgh Science Festivals – to name a few – the upcoming opening is set to complement the city’s world-renowned cultural offering and support its vibrant events calendar.

Inspired by the spirit of Arthur’s Seat and the meeting of tectonic plates, the light show represents the awakening of St James Quarter, after five years of development. Together with festival, tourism and cultural venues across the city, the display is a celebration of connectivity, bringing together landmarks throughout Edinburgh city centre, all leading to St James Square.

Over 500 light fixtures were placed around the ribbon building with accompanying projections and a soundtrack featuring local sound designer, Keith Fortune.

Mick Hay from The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo took centre stage, 55m meters from the ground, conducting the soundtrack with the unmistakable sounds of the drums, as lasers of light travelled across the city in all directions.

Rochelle Weir, Brand and Marketing Director at St James Quarter, said: “As we near the opening of phase one, the anticipation around the city is palpable.

“We wanted to bring this feeling to life, connecting with other landmarks, businesses, and partners across the city to mark our opening and cement our place on the iconic Edinburgh skyline.

“Our phase one opening is a significant moment in Edinburgh’s history, and we’re incredibly excited for the people of Edinburgh and beyond to see what lies behind the quarter. Last night’s display was just the beginning.”

The highly sought-after London Fashion Retail Academy course is coming to Scotland for the first time through an exclusive partnership with St James Quarter and Edinburgh College.

Working closely with over 140 fashion brands, the partnership is set to bring a unique Retail Fashion, Marketing and Branding course to Edinburgh College starting on 25th January – the first time the London based retail education specialist has ventured outside of London in its 15 years of existence.

The Fashion Retail Academy, awarded Ofsted Outstanding, is the quickest route to a career in fashion retail. Founded by retail giants, the Academy offers a range of exclusive fashion courses with unparalleled industry involvement to ensure students gain the skills and contacts needed to successfully progress to employment.

Funding from St James Quarter has allowed Edinburgh College to work exclusively with Fashion Retail Academy to develop this brand-new programme – starting on 25th January – to jump start Scottish students with a passion for fashion into the world of retail.

For the first time ever, the London based retail education specialist will provide expert resources that have been developed over the past 15 years to Edinburgh College students as part of a long term plan to enhance Edinburgh’s talent pipeline for retail roles – both for within St James Quarter and beyond.

The course will incorporate a range of topics including fashion retailing; branding and marketing; satisfying customer needs and digital retailing and will have a specific focus on the best ways to meet the needs of retailers, drawing on the most up-to-date research on the retail workforce and accounting for the acceleration of current trends brought about by the pandemic.

Once completed, all students will achieve a SCQF Level 5 qualification in Retail Fashion, Branding and Marketing and will be supported by St James Quarter in helping to find work within the retail industry.

Rochelle Burgess, Marketing Director at St James Quarter, said: “This partnership has been years in the making and we’re delighted to finally bring this course to life and to Edinburgh for the first time.

“With all the leading brands coming to St James Quarter, there’s lots of amazing employment opportunities coming too – this is an incredible way to support our local graduates, nurture local talent and bring a globally recognised curriculum to our city.

“After a very challenging year, one of our key focuses is to boost the Scottish retail industry and help the next generation receive the opportunities and support they need to work within it.

“Partnering with Edinburgh College and Fashion Retail Academy is a very exciting project for us and we’re looking forward to seeing how the students develop throughout the duration of the course.”

Amanda Colvin, Director of Marketing & Sales, Fashion Retail Academy, said: “This exciting opportunity to partner with Edinburgh College has given FRA the ability to extend its reach and support more young people who want to start a career in fashion retail, at the same time as providing the industry and St James Quarter with entry level talent who can hit the ground running on graduation.

“We hope this is the start of a long & successful collaboration, bringing a range of specialist fashion courses to Edinburgh.”

Audrey Cumberford, Edinburgh College Principal, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Fashion Retail Academy, and the St James Quarter, to offer people in the region an opportunity to develop their careers in fashion and retail through world-class training.

“Working with the Fashion Retail Academy to deliver the Certificate in Retail Fashion, Branding and Marketing course enables us to combine the knowledge and expertise of our lecturers with the FRA’s retail education specialists – providing students with the skills they need to succeed, and retailers with a highly-skilled, talented workforce.

“We are excited to be the first Scottish College to collaborate with the FRA in this way and we are looking forward to developing the partnership further to create a talent pipeline which will provide world-class customer service to the people of Edinburgh.”
