Charter gives voice to adults with additional support needs

Over sixty adults with additional support needs have come together to tell support services what measures they would like to see taken to improve the support they receive through a Charter for Involvement. The group is now calling on organisations to commit to putting their recommendations into practice and has produced a special animated film to promote the Charter. 

Known as the National Involvement Network (NIN), the group have been working for over two years to produce the Charter for Involvement, which to date has been signed by 32 support organisations.

Most of the adults involved have received support services their whole life and believe together they could have a stronger voice on how their services are delivered. Supported by independent charity ARC Scotland, The Charter not only gives these adults a voice but also a way for  support services to involve the people they support more in the work of the organisation.

The newly launched animated film accompanying the Charter describes how the 12 Charter statements help to improve the lives of people who get support. It sets out how people want to be more involved in the services they receive. The film was launched today at the Thistle Foundation earlier this week to an audience of NIN members and support organisations.

Chair of the National Involvement Network, Lynette Lynton said: “We all use support services in various ways and wanted to have more of a say in our services and be more involved in the way they are run.  Who better to advise support services on how well they are doing than the people that use them day-to-day?

“The launch of the Charter film is a huge occasion for everyone involved.  For those of you who have never seen it, it features an animated tiger to show how the Charter has helped make us feel strong and bold.

“The tiger also features on the cover of the Charter for Involvement and many people have now come to associate the tiger with our work.

“As chair of the National Involvement Network, I hope that the film will inspire people who receive care and support services to become more involved.

“The National Involvement Network and the Charter for Involvement have been made possible through the hard work and dedication of ARC Scotland.  They have supported the NIN through this process and it is their policy of bringing organisations and people together to find solutions that has made this possible.

“I would like to think that our work with the Charter has improved services and the experiences of service users nationally and I would urge other organisations who would like to know more about the Charter or to receive a copy to get in touch with Association for Real Change Scotland for more information.”

Summer Community BBQ Saturday 18th June

Our welcoming events volunteers are organising a summer BBQ with international food, music, dance and children’s activities at North Edinburgh Arts Centre, 5-9pm on 18th June.

It should be a great opportunity for anyone in the area to meet new people and have fun. Tickets are £1 from North Edinburgh Arts or Pilton Community Health Project. 

Addressing Inequality in Employment forum meeting

Employment is a big issue for many people in our area. Research in the recent Framework for Racial Equality highlighted that BME people are underrepresented in many areas. How should organisations address this?

We will have a guest speaker from the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights giving an overview of the current inequalities and how these could be addressed. We will also hear from organisations that have reviewed their recruitment practices to try to make them more accessible or to reach out to specific groups.

Local BME residents who have been supported by Community Renewal to find work or start businesses will share their experiences, as well as LINK Mentoring which runs a mentoring scheme for BME people looking for specific types of work.

There will be a chance to exchange ideas and discuss ways of moving forward both collectively and as individual organisations or residents. Lunch and crèche included. Please RSVP.

The Edinburgh Compact Partnership brings together key Public Sector partners and a range of Third Sector partners under the overarching principle: In Equal Respect.
Many third sector organisations working across the City will be aware of substantial changes taking place across our communities. Key demographic and financial pressures mean that both public and third sector organisations are now required to think differently about the way services are delivered.

This year’s Forum is based upon the twin themes of transformation and maximising assets. The forum will provide an opportunity to consider the issues affecting the City and how we, in partnership, can respond to and effectively deal with these challenges in a sustainable balanced way while continuing to provide good quality and valued services to our citizens.

The Forum will be highly interactive and will take the form of a ‘conversation-cafe’ to consider:

  • Session 1: Citizens at the Centre – Transforming public services in the City;

  • Session 2: Citizens at the Centre – Maximising assets for community benefit.

Product from the event will be included within the annual report to the Council’s Communities and Neighbourhoods Committee on the social and economic contribution to the city. The Forum will also launch the Compact Voice 2015/16 Report based on the most recent Compact Voice Survey.

While there is no charge for attending the event, organisations will need to directly consider any related costs for sending representatives to the Forum.

Government launches September Recycling Week

Cabinet Secretary for Environment Roseanna Cunningham has announced a week long effort to get Scotland recycling – and community groups are being encouraged to get involved.

Recycle Week will run from 12 to 18 September, co-ordinated by Zero Waste Scotland, it will aim to get everyone recycling more by raising awareness of the benefits and promoting easy ways to do more.

In the run up to the week local authorities, businesses, community groups, schools and colleges are being encouraged to get involved and take action to help boost recycling.

Launching the week this morning on World Environment Day (5 June), Ms Cunningham said: “We are lucky to be blessed with a stunning environment that is one of our most precious assets. It is crucial that we protect our resources and that’s key to our ambitions for a more circular economy in Scotland, where we keep products and materials in valuable use for longer.

“We’ve made great progress increasing recycling in recent years. For example in 2010 only 12% of households had food waste collections, while new figures show that has increased to 75%. It has never been easier to recycle your waste, but we still have further to go.

“People and communities the length and breadth of Scotland have a role to play and this September we’ll be encouraging more folk to pick up the recycling habit and do their bit for our environment.”

Iain Gulland, Chief Executive, Zero Waste Scotland, said: “Recycle Week is all about getting as many people in Scotland as possible aware of the need to recycle more and to recycle better.

“More people than ever are recycling, especially in relation to food waste, which has a huge environmental impact. But we can all be better at it, and during Recycle Week we’ll be highlighting the importance of doing our bit – providing advice on what and how to recycle best, exploding some of the myths in the process, with a series of high profile events and activities. I hope as many people as possible will get involved.”
