An enticing new all-day dining, working, and socialising space has joined Edinburgh’s vibrant restaurant scene.

Overlooking Bruntsfield Links and Meadows, The Neighbourhood l Kitchen – Bar – Garden offers locals, students and visitors the chance to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of an elegant home while catching up, celebrating or even getting on with the daily grind.

Its new co-working concept, within a flexible hot-desk hub, is tempting for those looking to escape a home office, study or student library, bottomless tea and coffee on tap and fast Wi-Fi for just £10 per day.

Meanwhile the ‘secret’ garden, hidden beyond a foliage archway, leads guests to The Neighbourhood’s intimate, heated booths. It also provides the perfect pet-friendly pitstop after a walk on the meadows.

General Manager, Alistair Bruce says: “We want The Neighbourhood to be an extension of our guests’ homes to unwind and reconnect with friends and family. Somewhere to work and play with homely food, creative cocktails, and true Scottish charm – from our service and design to the suppliers sourced throughout our menu and our quirky design.”

The Neighbourhood’s inviting menu includes a range of seasonal food and dishes inspired by Scotland and local ingredients.

Signature dishes include: seared scallops served with smoked cauliflower puree and Stornoway black pudding; haggis ravioli with crushed neeps, crispy potato and whisky cream sauce and North Sea battered haddock with pea puree, tartare sauce and triple cooked chips.

A variety of sharing platters, pizzas, pasta and burgers have also been carefully curated for the new menu, with plenty of vegan and gluten free alternatives. Those with a sweet tooth can expect desserts such as apple, ginger and pecan crumble and sticky toffee pudding.

Each evening, The Neighbourhood will become a late-night cocktail venue serving Scottish beers such as Coast to Coast, botanical cocktails with local ingredients such as the “Scottish Garden” made with Edinburgh Gin and “The Watermelon & Strawberry Gin Cooler”, using Caorunn Gin with a flavoured bubble on top.

The Neighbourhood replaces the former Bisque Brasserie, part of a £1million investment in collaboration with The Bruntsfield Hotel, formerly three stately houses built in 1861, all previously occupied by doctors, including botanist and surgeon William Craig.

The Neighbourhood’s design is inspired by the vibrant neighbourhood of Bruntsfield and the heritage of the Victorian building with brick slip clad columns, a stone clad bar front and a variety of seating styles within the sophisticated bar and restaurant space.

The Neighbourhood is open now, five days per week, Wednesdays to Sundays inclusive from 7am-1am, bar only from 5pm until late Mondays and Tuesdays.

Music to Your Ears: celebration as Bross Bagels teams up with Jackpot Peanut Butter

Two pioneering food brands have joined forces to shine a light on grassroots music venues, while celebrating a classic food combination of bagels and peanut butter.

This weekend, (Saturday 4th – Sunday 5th September), Bross Bagels will reveal the first in a range of limited-edition bagels, which will hero purpose-led brand Jackpot’s unique peanut butter, which ranges from their original to the more creative twists including raspberry, wasabi and cookies ‘n’ cream.

Bross Bagels will launch a new limited-edition bagel every weekend throughout September, with profits from the bagels going towards national charity, Music Venue Trust, which supports and endorses local UK music culture.  The partnership will help raise funds and support for grassroots music venues at a time of need for music, culture, artists, their teams and crew.

With the aim of celebrating grassroots music venues across the country, each limited-edition peanut butter bagel will be inspired by music and performance and named after a famous song or lyrics.

The bagels will be available at the Portobello, Leith and Bruntsfield Bross Bagels shops across Edinburgh, every weekend throughout September.

The partnership aims to celebrate a classic food combination, while shining a light on grassroots music culture, a sector that has like many, been significantly impacted by the pandemic.  The collaboration is a unique celebration of culture, music and independent venues, subjects close to the hearts of both brands.

Jackpot Peanut Butters will also be available to buy in all Bross Bagels shops throughout September, with a donation from the sale of each of the limited-edition bagels and Jackpot Peanut Butter pots going toward Music Venue Trust.

Launched in 2015, Jackpot Peanut Butter is an all-natural, traditional American peanut butter made in the UK – not dissimilar to Bross Bagels, who present authentic Montreal style bagels, made in Edinburgh.

The limited-edition bagels will kick off tomorrow (Saturday 4th September) with the (I can’t get no) Satay-Faction a sesame seed Bross bagel filled with hot smoked salmon, Jackpot Peanut Butter, Bross’ infamous frickles, shrettuce, fresh chilli, coriander, and Mama Bross’ rock sauce.

Since the brand launched in 2017, Bross Bagels has been committed to working with other independent brands who are equally dedicated to their craft, and traditional production methods, while giving them a modern twist.

Commenting on the latest collaboration, Bross Bagels founder Larah Bross said; “We’re always looking for ways to work with other brands who have a similar commitment to their craft that we do.  When we came across Jackpot Peanut Butter, we felt there was a real synergy in our purpose, passions and love of good food and music that bring people together.

“Bross Bagels was founded on the joy of sharing foods that conjure up memories.  For me growing up, there was nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a bagel – especially a peanut butter and jelly bagel!  We all have our comfort foods – and they’re comforting because food connects us to one another.

“Music conjures up the same sense of memory, belonging and connection, which is why we’re proud to be supporting both Jackpot and the Music Venue Trust.  And we had a hole lot of fun creating the new bagel recipes and names!”

Rupert Leigh, Creator and MD of Jackpot Peanut Butter said; “Bagels and Peanut Butter is a winning combination, as are music and food.  Never has there been a more important time to support grassroots music venues, and we’re thrilled to be able to work in collaboration with Larah and the Bross Bagels team to continue to support and nurture the culture of music.

“The sale of the bagels and Jackpot peanut butter pots will be donated to the Music Venue Trust, helping to support that next generation of music makers and fans – helping them grow and continue to entertain, and will highlight the need to look after and invest in our music culture.”

Top of the class for Boroughmuir apartments

A RESTORED Edinburgh landmark has landed its latest happy buyers, a couple who have snapped up a two-bedroom, ground floor apartment.

First time buyers Mark Love and Leon Macmillan had been renting for five years in Quartermile before they set out to find a home in their favourite area of Edinburgh, Bruntsfield.

After hearing about the transformation of the former Boroughmuir High School from a colleague, the couple found their dream home in a south-facing apartment with a main door access from the landscaped courtyard.

Mark, a product development director, said: “I’m originally from Glasgow and Leon grew up in Leith, and in 2015 we agreed we’d rent for a little while and wait for something to come on the market that we both liked.

“Nothing had really come up that we loved but as soon as we saw Boroughmuir, there was no doubt in our minds that we’d go for it. We spend a lot of time in Bruntsfield at the weekends, but we never really passed the old Boroughmuir High School so we didn’t know it was being converted into apartments.

“We had originally wanted a one-bedroom apartment but through discussion and seeing the homes in the flesh, we realised this is going to be our home for some time so we decided to go for a two-bedroom apartment.

“We had this affinity with Bruntsfield and had always said we didn’t want a fixer-upper, we’d prefer newbuilds or newly renovated homes so this ticked a huge box for us. It’s this amazing grand building in the heart of Bruntsfield – a pristine new home with a historic building around it, it’s really the best of both worlds.”

Mark and Leon chose a ground floor apartment with four large windows looking out from the front of the building, with a second bedroom that many residents have converted into home offices, overlooking the resident’s courtyard.

The couple has praised the team at CALA for their consistent communication while buying a home during a pandemic.

Mark added: “They say buying a home is one of the most stressful things you can do but to be honest it was amazingly stress-free. We can’t fault CALA at all, they were great from the outset.

“I think that’s probably what made it a lot easier, the constant communication from the Sales Consultants, they kept in touch about deadlines and guided us through the process. There was never a need to chase them, we were kept fully informed throughout.”

Nestled in the heart of Bruntsfield, Boroughmuir is a collection of one, two and three bedroom apartments. Most of the homes have elevated ceiling heights, with some up to seven metres, innovative mezzanine levels and carefully retained original features. .

Boroughmuir is regarded as one of the Scottish capital’s most prized school buildings, constructed pre-WWI between 1911 and 1914. The Grade B-listed building is the innovative creation of renowned architect John Alexander Carfrae and was notably one of the first in Edinburgh to utilise a steel frame for architecture.

The development’s location in Bruntsfield means it is surrounded by plenty of bars, restaurants, and independent shops, and only a short distance from Haymarket and the greenery of The Meadows.

Each of the apartments comes with lift access, allocated parking with access to electric vehicle charging points, access to a private residents’ courtyard and a ten year NHBC warranty.

Show home heats up with Michelin-star chef test

A RENOWNED Michelin-star chef cooked up a storm at a high-profile Edinburgh development, describing the designer kitchens as ideal for creating home-cooked family meals.

To celebrate local Scottish producers and the reopening of Edinburgh’s lively hospitality scene, Michelin-star Chef Tom Kitchin collaborated with CALA Homes (East) for a cook along at its Boroughmuir development in Bruntsfield.

The Masterchef guest judge regular demonstrated how home cooks could replicate restaurant-quality dishes from home, using local ingredients from his favourite suppliers across the city.

On the menu was Scottish salmon fillet from Welch fishmongers in Newhaven, with peas, lettuce, radish and broad beans.

More than 4500 users have tuned in across Facebook and Instagram to watch the decorated Chef cook live from the show apartment.

Chef Kitchin is the Chef Proprietor of four businesses across Edinburgh and East Lothian (The Kitchin, The Scran & Scallie, The Bonnie Badger & Southside Scran). Scotland’s youngest winner of a Michelin star, he took the opportunity to thank CALA for helping to shine a light on Edinburgh’s hospitality industry and local suppliers.

He said: “Edinburgh’s hospitality scene is so vibrant with so many ventures going on. For years we were the laughing stock – culinary wise – and now we can showcase some of the world’s best restaurants.

“It’s so different to other cities – it’s the most beautiful – and it’s a city that makes you smile. Each area is so unique.

“The restaurants we have in the Kitchin group are in such different parts of Edinburgh. I love being in The Kitchin in Leith, it has a totally different vibe to the Southside. But the great thing is, regardless where you are, you can get around the whole city so easily.

“I’ve really enjoyed cooking in a CALA kitchen. It has all the modern appliances you need – and is perfect for creating a home-cooked family meal.”

Chef Kitchin gave the show home kitchen, designed by Kitchens International, a grilling at the event, making full use of the integrated Siemens appliances throughout – bringing the meal together on the Siemens induction hob, located on a kitchen island – an ideal setting for entertaining.

Philip Hogg, Sales and Marketing Director with CALA Homes (East), said: “This event was a first for us and it surpassed all of our high expectations – it was an honour to have one of Scotland’s most renowned chefs cook in our kitchens.”

CALA offers buyers a range of homes and apartments across its three Edinburgh developments. Boroughmuir, in the heart of Bruntsfield, Waterfront Plaza in Leith, and The Crescent, located near Haymarket.

Community ownership for Bruntsfield St. Oswalds

After three years of planning, community-led Bruntsfield St. Oswald’s took ownership of the historic church and hall known as St. Oswald’s from the City of Edinburgh Council on 31 March.

The B-listed building on Montpelier Park was left vacant in February 2018 when Boroughmuir High School relocated to its canal-side site. The purchase was enabled under the Community Empowerment Act 2015 and supported by a generous grant from the Scottish Land Fund.

David Urch, Chair of Bruntsfield St. Oswald’s, said: “We are delighted to have brought St. Oswald’s into community ownership and would like to thank all our members and supporters, the Scottish Land Fund, the Community Ownership Support Service as well as the City of Edinburgh Council for making this possible.

“Our work now turns to transforming this historic building over the next year into a vibrant place for children, their families and our wider community to participate in a broad range of activities and events.”

Councillor Rob Munn, Finance and Resources Convener, the City of Edinburgh Council said: “As we start to move out of lockdown, it’s really encouraging to see fantastic projects like this going ahead.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the building brought back to life when it opens, filled with local families, the elderly and carers being offered valuable services in their local community.

“It’s so important that we give local people a say on the facilities they need for their area and this is one of four community asset transfers which are taking place over the next few weeks. Well done to the local people for making this much-needed project happen.”

The building is expected to open to the public in 2022 after a period of extensive refurbishment.

Scottish Land Fund boost for capital community groups

Three projects in Edinburgh and Midlothian are set to share in £392,611 funding from the Scottish Land Fund. The money enables the groups to take ownership of local assets and put them to use for the benefit of their local communities.

Amongst the groups receiving funding is Bruntsfield St Oswald’s Ltd, which has received £214,713 with which to purchase St Oswald’s Church and Hall (above) in order to develop them into a community facility providing wraparound childcare and to serve as a meeting place for local groups.

Penicuik Community Development Trust has been given £130,000 to purchase the Pen-y-Coe Press building (above), which they have developed into Scotland’s only Papermaking Museum, complete with working vintage printing presses, which are operated by volunteers to provide printing services that create income for Trust activities.

And Colinton Village Enterprise SCIO has been given £47,898 to purchase a former coach house in Colinton in order to operate a community hub from the building.

These awards are among 29, totalling £3.6 million, shared by groups across Scotland in the latest round of grants from the Scottish Land Fund.

David Urch, Chair of Bruntsfield St.Oswald’s, said: “We are absolutely delighted to hear that our application for funds to purchase St. Oswald’s Church and Hall has been approved by the Scottish Land Fund.

“This money, together with additional funds for refurbishment, as well as the continuing hard work and dedication of our team, will breathe life into an historic building and bring it into local ownership. Its development as a vibrant community hub to provide genuine public and affordable space for childcare, youth clubs and services, learning and development opportunities for local primary school children, as well space for community groups and services for the elderly, will be well received and of great benefit to all in the Bruntsfield area.”

Lorraine O’Shea, Trustee, Colinton Village Enterprise SCIO, said: “It was wonderful to receive the very positive news of our successful Scottish Land Fund application.

“This important funding will allow us to purchase an asset for the community, a great way to end an otherwise difficult year and allow us to develop our plans into 2021 and beyond.”

And Revd. Nick Bowry, Chairman, Penicuik Community Development Trust, said: “The PCDT is grateful for the award of this grant from the Scottish Land Fund. This crucial funding will not only ensure the survival of our community hub in the Pen-y-Coe Press at the heart of Penicuik, but enable us to further develop our activities.

“We aim to preserve the memories and honour the heritage of old Penicuik through our Paper Making Heritage Museum and to support the nurturing of a new caring community for Penicuik in the 21st century. The events of 2020 have reminded us of the importance of a caring and resilient community.”

Land Reform Secretary, Roseanna Cunninghamsaid:“The coronavirus pandemic has continued to set us all unprecedented challenges throughout 2020, acutely affecting local communities right across Scotland, and beyond.

“But despite these challenges – in fact, because of them – communities up and down the country are playing an increasingly vital role in maintaining and building our resilience, our spirit and local support networks.

“I commend the latest recipients of Scottish Land Fund grants for driving forward plans to support and enhance their local areas as part of our Green recovery, in what are clearly difficult circumstances.

“I am particularly pleased that, through what is the final round of funding for this year, the Scottish Land Fund is supporting such a high number of unique and diverse projects, and I look forward to these projects delivering on their ambitions in the new year.”

Sandra Holmes, Head of Community Assets at HIE, said: “These successful projects announced today are all great examples of people taking control of local resources for the long-term benefit of their communities. We wish all the successful groups the very best in their new ventures.”

And John Watt, Chair, Scottish Land Fund Committee said: “The groups across Edinburgh and the Lothians that are sharing in £392,611 of funding are now in a unique position to take control of land and property assets that will reap rewards for people now and for generations to come.
