Housebuilder Supports STEM Curriculum at Pirniehall

Award-winning housebuilder Urban Union is fostering STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) talent among primary pupils in north Edinburgh by running a competition designed to test innovation and creativity.

The competition with Pirniehall Primary, which is located less than a mile from Urban Union and the city council’s Pennywell Living development, saw primary 4 – 7 pupils create house models from scratch using woodwork skills.

24 Pupils picked up awards for their efforts in architectural design, property layout and execution of the marketing brochure.

Ross Neilson, STEM coordinator at Pirniehall Primary School said: “Working with Urban Union on this competition has been a fantastic way to bring the lessons the children have learnt in class to life.

“Through building the wooden models of their house designs, the pupils have learned how to safely cut with saws, measure accurately and glue their structures together. They also learned how to sell these designs, creating architectural drawings and marketing materials for brochures.

“The team at Urban Union came in to give a presentation and provide further insight into the construction industry, demonstrating to pupils how the skills they are learning in class translate into working life.”

STEM is a curriculum which groups subjects science, technology, engineering and maths together, teaching them in an interdisciplinary and applied approach rather than as four separate subjects.

Lauren Jenkins, Architect at Barton Willmore said: “It has been a great experience working with the pupils of Pirniehall Primary School – the work that the children put in was incredible and some of the designs were really incredible.

“It was a particularly special activity for me to support – while at primary school I took part in a similar workshop and the experience and learnings I took from it inspired me to go on to train to become an architect.  I hope that we’ve managed to inspire future generations of architects from the work we’ve carried out at Pirniehall.”

Neil McKay, Managing Director at Urban Union said: “At Urban Union we are always looking for ways to engage with the schools, be that through sponsorships, donations or with a more hands on approach like this competition.

“It has been rewarding to see the amazing designs of the pupils at Pirniehall Primary. Working with the school to help give context to its STEM curriculum has been a remarkable experience and one that we hope to replicate.

“Huge congratulations to all of the winners today. We have seen some amazing talent and there is certainly a bright future ahead for the pupils at Pirniehall Primary.”

Pennywell living is part of a housing-led regeneration programme being delivered through a partnership between the City of Edinburgh Council and Urban Union.  It is located only two miles from Edinburgh City Centre and is in the catchment area of a number of great local primary and secondary schools.

The development is in prime position to make the most of the many shops, bars and restaurants the capital has to offer and has a wealth of useful amenities in the area, making it perfect for young professionals and families.

Irene Garden

I am sorry to have to pass on the sad news of the death of local activist Irene Garden, who passed away last night.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Irene on many community initiatives and campaigns over the years and she was a formidable force, a strong and powerful community voice.

Her determined support of local projects, particuarly on health and older people’s issues, really made a difference. Pilton Elderly Project and Pilton Community Health Project in particular benefited from Irene’s wisdom and leadership and she was an enthusiastic participant in area-wide initiatives including the local Greater Pilton Community Alliance.

While Irene’s time was often dominated by too many meetings she enjoyed the performing arts and was an enthusiastic cast member in the memorable Oyster Wars community drama staged at North Edinburgh Arts Centre in June 2003 (above).

Further afield, Irene also made her presence felt as a community representative on citywide and national health fora, always a strong voice for socially excluded communities.

I will remember Irene – with her ever-loyal husband Al always there to give his support – with great fondness. Al sadly passed away in August after a long battle with dementia and now North Edinburgh has lost another of that generation of strong women activists who did so much to speak up for those communities whose voices are never heard.

Deepest commiserations to Sara-Louise and family – I will pass on the funeral arrangements when I have them.

Bonfire Night: Enjoy – but stay safe

BONFIRE NIGHT

Do you know what your children have planned this evening?

We don’t want anyone injuring themselves or others by playing with fireworks. As well as being dangerous, misusing fireworks is also an offence. Now is a good time to talk to your children about the dangers of fireworks and fires as well as the law, before it’s too late.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to attend organised Bonfire events this Tuesday, November 5.

Private firework displays and illegal bonfires pose a serious risk to the safety of the communities across Scotland.

And SFRS, alongside the Scottish Government, is making a final appeal to members of the public to attend an organised firework display and help curb illegal behaviour such as the construction of illegal bonfires.

Speaking on the run up to Bonfire Night Assistant Chief Officer Ross Haggart, the SFRS Director of Prevention and Protection, said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue service can be up to four times busier than usual on November 5.

“There are many official Bonfire events this year in Scotland and attending one of these can help ensure our resources are not delayed.

“Illegal bonfires needlessly take up our time and put others with genuine emergencies at risk.

“I would urge any member of the public who sees someone starting an illegal bonfire to contact Crimestoppers.

“I would also urge anyone who witnesses the construction of an unlit illegal bonfire to contact their local authority to have it removed.

“Together we can help each other stay safe this bonfire night.”

ACO Haggart was joined in the call by Minister for Community Safety Ash Denham.

Ms Denham also highlighted the distress that fireworks can cause for members of the community as well as animals such as livestock and pets.

Ms Denham said: “Bonfire Night is a chance for families and local communities to come together and enjoy fireworks responsibly. However the noise from fireworks can cause distress to vulnerable members of our communities – older people, those with post-traumatic stress disorder, autism or underlying mental health issues – and to animals.

“I would encourage people to be mindful of this and to attend organised displays where fireworks are set off in a controlled and safe environment.

“Bonfire Night is also one of the busiest nights of the year for our blue-light staff and robust action will be taken against anyone involved in the misuse of fireworks.

“I would urge members of the public to report any criminal or anti-social behaviour to Police Scotland, their local council, or through Crimestoppers.”

Crimestoppers can be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 or contacted through their website at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
