NEN Walkathon: just three more posts to go

Just in case you’ve missed one or two previous posts, NEN Walkathon is taking place this Saturday (20 July), leaving from Edinburgh College Granton Campus.

Registration takes place from 9.45am and the Walk starts at 10.30.

NEN boeard member Ann Confrey has helped to organise the event. She said: “I have had a very productive meeting with a group of volunteers who will be assisting on Saturday. There are five ladies, all of whom have experience leading or helping to lead groups of walkers in the North Edinburgh area.

“I have one other volunteer – Clare – who will be manning the registration desk and the college’s lovely Jen Kelly will be ensuring that refreshments, information and ample space are provided for the registration process.”

So everything’s in place – all we need now are the local walkers to help make the NEN Walkathon a day to remember!

Letters: Winners and losers of the global race

Dear Editor

The repeated use of certain words and phrases, for example ‘let me be clear’, ‘openness and transparency’, ‘hub’, ‘flat-lining’ are very irritating; and ‘we must win the global race’, often repeated by David Cameron and most Tory politicians, is both annoying and dangerous.

Dangerous; when the state of the world needs nations to work together to solve problems of food production, fuel and energy supplies, diseases, protection of the world’s forests and climate change.

Dangerous; because ‘winning the global race’ means there are losers, creating disastrous unemployment, poverty and health problems.

There are many examples of companies engaged in the ‘global race’, making vast profits in one country, closing industries in others, showing little concern for people’s’ lives and wellbeing. The ‘global race’ does not exclude the working people of the UK from this exploitation.

Pilton Community Health Project is a fast-changing organisation which has been working with local people to overcome health inequalities in north Edinburgh for more nearly 30 years.

We are currently recruiting motivated and dedicated people to join our Board of Directors. Save money – and the environment – at your local library

First books, now bin bags! Compostable food waste bin liners are now on sale at libraries across Edinburgh at a bargain price in a bid to boost recycling figures.

Rolls of the liners can be bought over the library counter for £1 in response to public feedback suggesting that they can be costly to buy in shops.

The majority of households in the Capital will have access to food waste recycling when the latest stage is rolled out by the end of this summer, which will help to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill.

Councillor Jim Orr, Transport and Environment Vice Convener, said: “Food waste recycling has been supported really well by residents, and if we want to encourage more to take it up, then it should be made as easy as possible to do. An average household bin contains around one third of food waste, which releases harmful greenhouse gases when it ends up on landfill sites. Recycling it, however, can generate electricity to power homes and businesses.
“Feedback from the public has suggested that some find the price of food bin liners prohibitive. Hopefully, by selling them in accessible libraries at a bargain price, I hope that this will be one less barrier to people who want to help the environment.”

Arise, Sir Baldrick!

At last, a ‘cunning plan’ has come together – and in British honours system hierarchy Baldrick now outranks his master Blackadder! Blackadder actor Tony Robinson has been knighted while his co-star Rowan Atkinson receives a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Among the other well-known names to receive honours are Adele, Rob Brydon, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber, Clare Balding, golfer Paul Lawrie and former Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell, but the majority of recipients are unsung heroes – of the 1,180 people who appear on the Birthday Honours list, almost three-quarters are people who are actively engaged in charitable or voluntary work within their local communities.

Morrisons to offer online shopping

Morrisons, the UK’s fourth biggest supermarket chain, is to launch an online grocery service.

Morrisons is currently the only one of the big four – Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s are the others – not to offer an online shopping option to their customers, but a deal with internet grocer Ocado will see it offer the new service by January next year.

Delivery vans will carry the Morrisons brand, with Ocado supplying logistical support from it’s distribution centre in the Midlands.

Morrisons chief executive Dalton Philips told BBC Radio 4: “This is a very good transaction for both parties. We’re going from a standing start to the fast lane in the blink of an eye.”

Business analysts Conlumino predict that the total food and grocery market is forecast to grow 22% from £127bn to £155bn by 2017, with online food sales are expected to grow by nearly 70% over the same period, from £5.9bn to £10bn. Almost 30% of people in the UK now shop online for food and groceries.

Spartans lift Scottish Youth Cup in five star show

Congratulations to The Spartans Under-17s, who lifted the Scottish Youth Football Association (SYFA) trophy in their first ever national final on Sunday.

The North Edinburgh side produced a fantastic performance in a superb 5 – 0 win over Giffnock SC in the SYFA Scottish Cup final at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium, playing some excellent passing football throughout the 90 minutes.

Spartans started much the stronger and Sean Stewart gave the North Edinburgh side an early lead in only five minutes. That lead could have been doubled minutes later, but Scott Irving’s penalty was saved by the Giffnock keeper.

Spartans dominance was not to be denied, though, and Jordan Brown added to Spartans lead on the half hour with a powerful left foot drive into the top corner.

Spartans continued where they left off in the second half, and further goals by Blair Atkinson and Steven Havelin sealed a comprehensive victory, setting the seal on a fine performance.

The SYFA Cup may not be Spartans U17s last silverware this season. The local lads have their sights set on another three more trophies – two cups and the League title – before the season ends!

Where’s the burdz? Volunteer opportunity!

I am writing from RSPB Scotland, a UK conservation charity. We have a new volunteer opportunity that I thought members of the community might be interested in.

We would like to recruit some volunteers who are interested in helping us campaign for wildlife conservation. We will support them to write to, visit and lobby their local decision makers on our behalf as we prepare to launch a marine conservation campaign to protect seabirds at sea. We hope it will be a great opportunity for volunteers to meet people and gain new skills.

Free sound and theatre workshop this Sunday

Creative Electric are running a FREE workshop this Sunday 2-4pm at The Bongo Club, Edinburgh with Joshua Payne exploring sound effects and physical theatre. This workshop is for young people between 16-25 and is funded by The Neighbourhood Partnership.

Joshua Payne is a theatre maker whose work has a focus on designing original sound and music for physical movement. Most often Joshua works with Theatre Company ‘Down The Rabbit Hole’ as a director, performer and sound artist making work that raises awareness of Mental Ill-Health. Previous credits as a sound designer include Promethea, Feather by Feather, Language At The Edge of Sense, Much Ado About Nothing and associate design for two years on The Enchanted Forest, Pitlochry.
