Saying Goodbye to Madge

We said goodbye to Madge yesterday.

Madge was one of those women who everyone seemed to know; a popular and weel-kent face around Royston and Crewe and the funeral service was packed.

I have known Madge and her family socially for more than forty years, but there are still some things you find out that come as a surprise. And at Warriston I learned that Madge had written a poem:

Curious about performing and creating a small show this summer? Join our Drama Summer Camp at NEA!

Whether you’re a budding actor, curious about the stage, or just want to try something new, this is a fun, supportive space to explore drama. We’ll play games, try improvisation and stagecraft, and work together to create a brand-new piece of theatre to share with family and friends.

No experience needed — just bring your imagination!

NEA Drama Summer Camp will be led by Marilyn Blyth Wilson who is a performer, director and acting teacher. She works with various theatre companies and runs her own company Blythwood Theatre, focusing on collaboration with young people to bring new writing and performances that focus on what matters to them.

Marilyn will be with us at NEA as part of EPAD’s Supported Residency programme, which aims to support the creation of new work and to build connections between Edinburgh-based performing arts creatives and venues across the city

✅ If required, blazers and ties can be purchased in school or from the websites below. Cash only if purchasing in school. We have a variety of sizes to try in school if you need assistance with this 👍

✅ If required, school jumpers are available online

✅ Black jeans are acceptable as long as they are not faded or ripped

✅ We have a stock of pre-loved uniform available to all pupils free of charge in school (donations continually welcome!)

Free Jewellery-Making Workshops at North Edinburgh Arts

Are you a local resident of Muirhouse, Pilton, Drylaw or Granton? Fancy trying something creative and hands-on this summer?

Join jeweller and community artist Lisa Arnott (SilverHub Jewellery School and StudiosFlourish Jewellery Project) for 4 weeks of FREE jewellery-making workshops at North Edinburgh Arts!

You’ll learn how to make beautiful, wearable pieces — from bangles and rings to earrings and pendants — using professional tools and techniques.

We’re running two weekly groups throughout July:

For local adults (age 21+)

For young adults (ages 16-21)

Local stores support school leavers

A huge well done to DAY-TODAY DRYLAW & PREMIER MUIRHOUSE 

They went out of their way to give five local schools some goodies for the primary 7 leavers last week (writes DEAN LOUGHTON).

yesterday morning was such a mad rush trying to get stock for the p7s at five local primary schools, we managed to get round the five schools with our donations and each school was overwhelmed with the donation – and so were the P7s!

As the goodies were being brought in to school there were some P7s  floating around getting their tops signed but luckily enough they never spotted what was on the trolley! 

A Triumph for Muirhouse!

‘Come Dine With Us’ initiative recognised for tackling loneliness and fostering community wellbeing

MUIRHOUSE HOUSING Association is celebrating a magnificent triumph in a prestigious set of national awards.

The Association excelled in the Tenant Participation Service (TPAS) Scotland National Good Practice Awards scoring a win in the keenly-contested category for Community Involvement – tenant/community group. 

It was a powerful endorsement of Muirhouse’s commitment to placing its community at the heart of everything it does as a housing provider.

The National Good Practice Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in tenant participation by individual tenants, tenant groups and social landlords.

The category won by Muirhouse “recognises and celebrates the achievements of a tenant or community-led group or project that has supported other individuals or groups within their community and made a positive impact.”

Muirhouse’s triumph centred on its innovative and inclusive “Come Dine With  Us” initiative – a recurring event offering a free meal and companionship to local residents aimed at tackling isolation and loneliness

Launched in 2022, it instantly resonated with the community and attracts between 15 and 30 people to the weekly get-together in winter with it running fortnightly in the summer.

It has chalked up some impressive outcomes with evaluation showing an increase in the age groups attending ranging from 26-85 plus an impressive 140% increase in how satisfied those attending are with their lives. An increase of 83% was recorded from those attending who felt the things they do in life are “worthwhile”.

Muirhouse Chief Executive Susan Bell, added: “Ensuring we do our bit to tackle loneliness and isolation in our community – especially among those who are single – remains an important part of our work.

“In the face of the cost-of-living challenges, we as a housing association are ideally placed to make a difference and Come Dine With Us tackles this very issue. We remain very grateful for the funding received which helps to support this important initiative.”

“This project provides the opportunity to inspire and empower individuals to foster better health, connect with others in the community and feel valued.

“We are thrilled to receive this award, which recognises the dedication and teamwork behind our efforts to support the community.”
