Going to the Fringe? Don’t Bother!

Multi award-winning performance poet Bróccán Tyzack-Carlin has brought his stand-up poetry show Don’t Bother to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Making a name for himself on the comedy and poetry circuits, Bróccán has been wowing audiences with his clever, quick witted repertoire, and is described as being “at the top of his game”.

Don’t Bother can been seen at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019 until Monday 26 August, at Venue 302, Underbelly, in Bristo Square. The performance time is 12.10pm.

This run at Edinburgh is return to Underbelly for Bróccán, who took one of his early works – Laugh Actually – to the very same venue as part of the Edinburgh Fringe 2017.

Laugh Actually received 5-star reviews and the Derek Award for Best Sketch Comedy Show, and was described as “comedy genius” by comedian and TV and radio broadcaster, Jeremy Vine.

Don’t Bother blends surreal humour with storytelling and spoken word. This semi-coherent exploration of nothing in particular, using some words that rhyme and some more that don’t, with mentions of dead dogs, chocolate and nostalgia. It’s one unique hour of comedy that is not to be missed.

Hartlepool-born Bróccán is a comedian, performance poet, and actor – and has earned accolades in all three genres. Just this year, Don’t Bother received the Saboteur Award for Best Spoken Word Show, while Bróccán was nominated for the Saboteur Award for Best Spoken Word Artist.

A regular headliner at comedy and poetry nights across the country, he performed at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London in June. And ahead of appearing at Edinburgh, Bróccán will appear on the Soapbox Stage at this weekend’s Kendall Calling Festival alongside comedians including Josh Widdicombe and Reginald D. Hunter.

Bróccán said: “Don’t Bother is very much a passion project for me. In a lot of ways, it’s a response to all the things that have annoyed me about poetry and comedy shows I’ve seen in the past. Through its mix of surrealist observational comedy, and fantastical storytelling, this show merges stand-up and spoken word in a unique fashion.

“It’s a bizarre and entertaining hour but, first and foremost, it’s hopefully just a really good laugh. After developing and performing it for over a year, I am thrilled to finally be able to take it to Edinburgh Fringe for an extended run. It is a joyous, surreal and at times thought-provoking show, and I cannot wait to share it with a wider audience.”

Bróccán’s first steps into performance came from acting, mainly through more than 20 productions during his time at Durham University, alongside his English studies. He was performed to invite at the National Student Drama Festival 2016 with a production of The Addams Family Musical, for which he won the Spotlight Award for Most Promising Actor and the Festgoers Award for Best Show.

He was selected to join prestigious comedy troupe The Durham Revue in Autumn 2016. A performer and writer, his work was performed at venues including Durham Gala Theatre, Cambridge Arts Theatre, and Oxford Playhouse, followed by the four-week run for Laugh Actually at Underbelly at the Edinburgh Fringe 2017.

After his first spoken word open mic performance in December 2017, Bróccán was invited back to headline the following month’s event – beginning a journey of experimenting with blending poetry more explicitly with his comedy roots, developing his own unique style of stand-up poetry. By March 2018 he had headlined Durham Castle’s Comedy Cabaret, and by June 2018 he’d written and debuted his first hour-long debut show Don’t Bother at Nottingham New Theatre.

He has since been performing Don’t Bother at festivals and venues across the UK, including Brighton Fringe, Leicester Comedy Festival, Durham Summer In The City Festival, and Greater Manchester Fringe.

Other awards include Manchester Slam 2018 and Huddersfield Literature Festival Slam 2019; as well as runner up in the Champion of Champions Slam 2019, and a Hammer and Tongue National Finalist 2019.

Don’t Bother is recommended for audiences of 14 years or above. Contains themes and language of an adult nature.
