Starting today: Summertime Streets in city centre

Between 28 July and 1 September 2019, temporary changes will be in place on streets in the Old Town. The changes will help to make our busy streets easier and safer to walk around.

Resident parking – Cockburn Street and Victoria Street

Controlled Parking Zones 3 and 4 operate in the Old Town. To park on-street in these zones you need to hold a valid resident’s permit, or use pay and display parking bays.

From 10.30am to 6.30pm, parking will be suspended on Cockburn Street zone 3 and Victoria Street zone 4. During these hours, permit holders will be able to park in other streets in the same permit zone. Check all the streets in your permit zone.

Deliveries

If you are planning any shopping or other deliveries to your home please check the map for access times.

Blue Badge holders

Disabled parking bays on Cockburn Street and Victoria Street can still be accessedduring vehicle-free hours, between 10.30am and 6.30pm. You can access Cockburn Street from Market Street and Victoria Street from Cowgatehead or Grassmarket.

Stewards will be at access points to direct blue badge holders through vehicle-free areas to a space.

Places of worship

Those who might need closer access for worship or ceremonies during vehicle-free hours, should send an advance email to us.

Loading and servicing for businesses

Commercial waste collections will be affected by the summertime streets restrictions. All waste collections will need to be completed before the affected streets close. You may have to move your bins for collection to another location.

Loading and servicing will have to take place during the period the streets are open, overnight between 6.30pm and 10.30am, which is consistent with the normal times affecting the High Street in Edinburgh. Outside these times, and in some closed streets, loading and servicing may have to occur some distance from your business. You will have to make sure your supplier or delivery drivers are aware that there will be restrictions in place.

Those receiving goods by bike or on foot will not be affected.

Local bus services

The service 2 route will continue to operate through Grassmarket and Candlemaker Row. Candlemaker Row will be closed to all other vehicles including tour buses and coaches between Merchant Street and George IV Bridge.

The service 6 is not affected by the changes.

The service 35 will be re-routed from Abbey Mount along Regent Road and onto North Bridge. The Council has arranged a taxi service for residents affected by this change to the service 35. If you live in

  • Croft-an-Righ
  • Canongate area and closes
  • High Street area and closes
  • Dumbiedykes

and you are not able to walk to a nearby stop on

  • Jeffrey Street
  • St Mary’s Street
  • South Bridge

you will be able to pre-book a taxi for necessary journeys.

Contact us in advance to pre-book the taxi service.

If you live in sheltered housing and need transport, then please contact your housing warden first.
