Thumbs up as top chef launches Children’s Breakfast fundraiser

MasterChef winner Gary Maclean faced the toughest judging panel of his career as he joined STV weather presenter Sean Batty at the launch of the Big Scottish Breakfast, an annual STV Children’s Appeal fundraising event supporting children and young people affected by poverty in Scotland.

The Big Scottish Breakfast will be held on Friday 6th September, with schools, businesses, community groups and sports teams in Edinburgh encouraged to get together for fun breakfast events to raise money for Scotland’s children.

Multi-award winning chef Gary, who is Senior Chef Lecturer at City of Glasgow College, and Sean, a long-term supporter of the STV Children’s Appeal, visited Glasgow project PEEK to launch this year’s Big Scottish Breakfast campaign.

The project, which is supported by Appeal funding, offers play, creative learning and volunteering opportunities for children and young people, and their families, in disadvantaged communities across the north east of Glasgow.

Gary Maclean said: “As a father of five and an educator in food, I have seen first-hand the difference a healthy breakfast makes. Young people have a much sharper focus and having breakfast has been proven to make a huge difference in productivity and concentration in class.

“Too many kids go without breakfast and I feel every child in Scotland should be able to access a healthy breakfast each day and every day.”

Sean Batty said: “I’ve had a brilliant time supporting the Big Scottish Breakfast over the last few years and I’m really excited to help launch the 2019 campaign alongside Gary.

“This year we’re determined to go bigger and better than ever, and I’d love to see schools, businesses and groups in Edinburgh join in with their own Big Scottish Breakfast to raise money for Scotland’s children.

“We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so please help the STV Children’s Appeal ensure that children in Scotland get a good start to the day and the best start in life.”

Does your school, business, sports team or community group want to arrange its own Big Scottish Breakfast on Friday 6th September?

Since launching in 2011 the STV Children’s Appeal has raised over £19 million, with 1102 grants awarded to projects across all 32 local authority areas in Scotland – providing much needed support to over 79,000 children and young people. The money raised is distributed to provide practical help like food and warm clothes, create opportunities for training and employability, and enable social and emotional support for those who need it most.

The Big Scottish Breakfast is sponsored by Wholesale Domestic Bathrooms.

Walter Toward, co-owner of Wholesale Domestic Bathrooms, said:“The Big Scottish Breakfast is a fantastic campaign by the STV Children’s Appeal and we are so proud to be on board as sponsor for the second year running.

“I hope businesses across Scotland will join us in supporting Scotland’s children with their very own Big Scottish Breakfast events on 6th September.”
