Hello, and welcome to the latest edition of Weekly Roundup, bringing you the best in Scottish policing news from the past seven days.
Figures released by rural insurer NFU Mutual this week pointed towards a significant reduction in the cost of rural crime. Chief Superintendent John McKenzie said, “Across Scotland, rural partners and police have worked extremely hard to make a real difference to communities and the continued downward trend of crime figures in rural communities is an outcome linked to this approach. The close working with partner organisations means that we can quickly respond to emerging trends and crime hot spots and target those who pursue criminal activity in rural communities.”
At the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday, 24-year-old Nico Allan was found guilty of the murder of Mark Squires, who died after an incident in October last year.
Also this week, a drugs haul worth over half a million pounds in heroin, cocaine and canabis was seized in Lossiemouth, with three people charged over the recovery.
Meanwhile, a 49-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were charged following a pickpocketing outbreak in Edinburgh, and two men have been arrested and charged following an armed robbery in Blackburn.
In other news, Chief Inspector Bob Mackay, event commander at the Belladrum Festival, has praised revellers for their good behaviour behaviour at this year’s event, which recorded only six arrests. Chief Inspector Mackay commented, “We were very pleased to support the organisers of Belladrum once again to deliver a safe and friendly festival. I would like to pass on our thanks to the vast majority of festival goers who helped make the event memorable for the right reasons.”
