Lottery support for Leith’s Super Power Agency

Leith’s Super Power Agency is one of 72 groups to receive a cash boost from the National Lottery in the latest round of awards totalling £590,572. The funding comes from National Lottery Awards for All Scotland which makes grants from £300 to £10,000 to voluntary and community groups across the country.

Launched last year, the Super Power Agency works with young people aged between eight and 18 years old across the city to help improve their literacy, closing any gaps in their education whilst helping to build confidence and self-esteem.

The group relies on a band of committed volunteers who provide a mentoring role for the youngsters as well delivering a wide programme of creative writing workshops. An award of £10,000 will help them to co-ordinate and expand their work.

Gerald Richards, CEO, Super Power Agency SCIO, said, “We are thrilled to have been awarded this money thanks to National Lottery players.  We rely  on our volunteers to take our writing programmes to our students across Edinburgh and this grant means we can bring in our first Volunteer Co-ordinator. This will help us recruit, train and retain our volunteers who are the lifeblood of our organisation.”

Thanks to an award of £6,000 Erskine Hospital will be able to take veterans from each of the group’s four care homes in Scotland on weekly trips to Castle Semple Outdoor Centre in Lochwinnoch to take part in a range of outdoor activities both on and off the water.

Derek Barron, Director of Care, Erkine Hospital, said, “We are delighted to have been awarded this grant.  We know from our previous experience that our residents love the opportunity to join in the activities at Castle Semple Outdoor Centre.

“For many of our veterans it’s a chance to try something completely new, whilst for others it’s a chance to enjoy an old hobby.   They especially relish the chance to go out on speedboats and sail boats and this is only possible through the generous support of National Lottery players – so huge thanks to them as they are making a huge difference to the lives of our residents.”

A National Lottery Awards for All spokesperson said: “This is National Lottery money making a real impact in communities across Scotland. The 74 groups receiving funding today showcases the range of projects that can be funded through this programme and the difference that even the smallest amounts of money can make.”

National Lottery Awards for All Scotland is now more straightforward to apply to and faster to get funding from. Applications are received on a rolling basis and can be received at any time.
