PROCESSIONS route announced

Thousands of people have already registered for the free to join event on Sunday 10 June, when women and girls will walk togetherwearing one of the suffragette colours – green, white or violet – to mark the centenary of the first votes for women. Participants will be encouraged to bring handmade banners and flags in a show of unity as they process through Edinburgh’s streets as part of this historic event.

The 2.5 mile (4km) parade has been confirmed to assemble between 12:15 – 1:30pm and step off from Middle Meadow Walk, before curling round Forrest Road to George IV Bridge down to the foot of the Mound. Councillors agreed to allow the event to take in the East End of Princes Street, so that women can follow in the same footsteps of Scottish suffragettes who marched along Princes Street over 100 years ago. The route will then snake along North Bridge, before passing down the Royal Mile into the Canongate, finishing at 2:00pm in Holyrood Park. 

Cllr McNeese-Mechan said: “Stretching from the Meadows to the Mound, over North Bridge to the Royal Mile, this procession of thousands of women and girls streaming through the city in  green, violet and white will be an incredible sight. I am so pleased we have not only been able to help bring the event to Edinburgh, but that the Council has united to ensure it features the fantastic and high profile route it deserves.

“Thanks to the decision of Councillors last week, the PROCESSIONS route will feature Princes Street which is of course where Scottish suffragettes once marched. It’s going to be something really special to take part in, and I am sure thousands of people from all over Scotland will join me and many others in what will be a day to remember.”

This mass-participatory event is produced by Artichoke and commissioned by 14-18 NOW. It will see PROCESSIONS take place simultaneously in London, Belfast and Cardiff as well as Edinburgh.
