There’s an old expression that ‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch’ Well, think again! Environmental charity Changeworks is hosting a free lunch on Sunday 6 May 2018 made from food that would otherwise have gone to waste.
Locals and visitors alike can bring their families and friends along to the feast. They will not only get a belly full of delicious hot food but will be giving food waste it’s just ‘desserts’!
Changeworks will be dishing out against food waste at three Leith venues between 12 noon and 3pm. Diners can enjoy a meal at either Out of the Blue Drill Hall on Dalmeny Street, the Citadel Youth Centre on Commercial Street or at the Leith Community Croft on Leith Links. Over and above the amazing food there will be lots of family friendly fun including foodie lucky dips, cookery demos, foodie films, food juggling and salad planting.
Kathleen Vaughn, Changeworks’ Senior Waste Project Officer said, “We want to raise awareness of the alarming volume of food waste created from farm to fork. Sadly, one third of all food produced globally is wasted and in Scotland, as we throw away 600,000 tonnes of food from our homes each year.
“The Feed the 1000 event aims to make us all reflect on our relationship with food and will be an opportunity to revalue the food we have. We hope that those who attend will leave with a renewed commitment to make simple changes to reduce food waste at home. This will help lessen our collective environmental impact and put some money back in our wallets instead of the bin.”
Feeding the 1000 has been made possible through funding from Sainsbury’s Waste less, Save more campaign. The event will showcase some of the fantastic local community food projects happening across Edinburgh and is only possible due to our generous event partners; Out of the Blue Café, Punjabi Junction, Cyrenians, Food Sharing Edinburgh, Dr Bell’s Family Centre, The Real Junk Food Project Edinburgh, The Citadel Youth Centre, Leith Festival, Slow Food Youth Network Scotland, Crops and Pots, Leith Community Croft and Fareshare.
