UK Advertised Salaries Grow In Every UK Region
- UK average advertised salaries up– currently sitting at £33,646; up 3.5% year-on-year
- Every region in the UK showed year-on-year salary growth
- Total advertised vacancies at 1,104,236 – down 8.3% over six months
- Graduate salaries stutter– advertised salaries declined 12.1% over 12 months to £21,400
- Energy salaries light up – typical sector pay up 10.8% annually to £40,640.
Average UK advertised salaries have increased in the last 12 months, up 3.5% to £33,646, according to Adzuna.co.uk. Growth in advertised wages is in evidence in every on of the 12 UK regions.
The 3.5% improvement in the year to March 2018 means the average advertised wage is now £33.646. Following an ongoing pay squeeze, UK average salaries are starting to show signs of sustained growth, with March marking the 4th consecutive month of positive movement for UK pay packets.
However while salaries health is booming, the total number of advertised vacancies in the UK has stagnated in recent months. Currently sitting at 1,104,236, the quota of open roles has fallen 8.3% in the last six months.
Doug Monro, co-founder of Adzuna, explains: “Every corner of the UK saw a blossoming in average advertised salaries as the British economy springs into the second quarter. Northern Ireland and the nation’s capital, London, saw the fastest growth, while Scotland and the country’s North East quarter bought up the rear.”

Graduate pay packages not making grade
Recent graduates have been among the hardest hit in terms of average advertised salaries, according to Adzuna’s sector breakdown. Typical advertised salaries are down by 12.1% from March 2017; currently sitting at £21,480. The total number of advertised vacancies specifically for university leavers was just 9,592 last month.
Doug Monro, co-founder of Adzuna explains: “With Spring looming large on the horizon, thoughts are turning to the future, and the fight for first jobs, for graduates up and down the UK. And for many, that means a few worries along the way. Recent reports show less than 10,000 graduate jobs on the market, and advertised wages for newly qualified workers down 12.1% since last year. The Class of 2018 will have to work hard, think smart and be prepared to stand out from the crowd, if they hope to bag their dream job in short order.”

Energy sector full of beans
Salaries in the Energy, Oil and Gas sector have seen something of a resurgence of late, with the industry re-entering the table of best performing sectors by average pay packet in March 2018. Sector salaries sat at £40,460, according to Adzuna data, showing a 10.8% increase from March 2017. In addition, the total number of advertised vacancies within the energy, oil and gas sector sat at 3,500 at the end of the first quarter of 2018.
